Does anyone have a Nikon Digital Camera or can recommend one?

I also have the D70 and depending on which lens you put on it can be quite heavy.

I had it out at the zoo yesterday. When I have it on Automatic focus I can get some great pictures. But when you are far away from your subject, it is hard to tell what object it is focusing on. I took some pics of the gorillas that I thought would be really good. But when I got them up on my computer, I can tell that the lens was focusing on the tree branches and not the animals.

I'm still learning how to focus manually. :cool1:

I have the Coolpix 4300 and 8800. I also have the D100. All have served me well. I already had a lot of Nikon lenses, so that tipped my early digital decision. That said, I would have narrowed it to Canon and Nikon. Both are doing great stuff.

For ease of use, the Kodak EasyShare line gets rave reviews.

For those who have consistent problems (blurry, always too light/dark) watch out for the scene modes. They can cause the focus to fix (long or short) and push the exposure around, too. Just a thought.

Be sure to vet any candidates at www.dpreview.com

I would suggest choosing a camera with a rechargable L-Ion battery. If it only uses AAs it will go though them like M&Ms.

Good luck.

I just bought the Nikon 5900 and I love it!
A year and a couple of months ago I bought a Canon S50. It was a $500.00 piece of junk. I never was happy w/ it but then it just died (of course right after the warranty expired). I vowed to not buy another Canon.
I researched a lot before I bought the 5900. I have been testing in very varied settings and it has been perfect.
I used the internal memory to take some shots of my DD's in soccer practice and the action shots are great! Perfectly clear.
I looked at the 7900 but thought the 5 MP was fine for storing on the computer like I use most frequently.

For those of you who own the cool pix 3100 - I too have a terrible time with the night pictures. The are always blurry, or I only get the person in the picture and the background doesn't appear. I have tried scene mode with the back light, and everyother "dark" setting, but something is not right. I had the same problem with a fuji camera that I had previous, so I am thinking it must be something I am doing?

I was looking at getting the Nikon 7900, but wasn't sure if it was worth the price.

They are pretty good cameras, however I have been, and still am totally disappointed with the blue hues. They *way* over do the blues and the pics don't look quite natural to me. I'd hate to have to edit every pic I took due to over blue hues.

I admit, I went with Canon for a few of my digitals over the years and never been disappointed :)

100% agreed

My brother and my parents own a Coolpix 5200 and 5900 respectively. They hate them, I hate them, my husband hate them. Too much blue/magenta hue. Now they don't use them at all and they've bought Fuji A345 and Canon A95 respectively.

I personally use Canon exclusively (300D, A80 and A95) after trying many other manufacturers such as Fuji, Nikon (ugh), Kodak, Minolta (ugh), Olympus (double ugh) and HP (so bad it doesn't even deserve the term 'ugh').

For night mode you'll need a tripod or an extremely steady hand. The flash will light up the closer object in front of the camera, but the shutter remains open longer to capture the lights in the background (say picture of you in front of the castle)

I have the same problem! I figured I was doing something wrong, too. My night and indoor pictures are horrible! Daytime ones come out great. I took a picture with my coolpix 3100 and with a friend's kodak easyshare, and the difference was unbelievable. I'm going out this week to find a better camera!

As mentioned before, your problem is mutually exclusive with the camera you're using. A very steady hand or a tripod is needed for night modes.
