Still thinking... and doing my homework....

now trying to figure out how many points we need. does anyone have 100 pts. is that too small? is it sufficient? i was originally thinking 160 and am still thinking about 150, but thinking maybe to get ourselves started, 100.

If you want to buy direct from Disney the minimum for a new contract is 150. There are resales for less, but you need to consider the closing costs.

Look at when you travel (time of year and for how long). How many points would you need to replicate that at the DVC resort you would most like to stay at? Also consider whether studio, one bedroom, etc. It is as good a starting point as any.

Hi, dbdisney. Assuming you have looked at all the point charts to figure what you need, there is one more thing NOT found in the charts.
That one thing is the eventual desire to visit WDW more often, and stay in larger accommodations. Throw that in with the occasional VB or HH trip, and a stay at the Poly, and you can easily see how point requirements soar!

Well, I figured that 150 would be fine for us. We bought in Oct.'03. Here it is, 8 months later and I already wish we had bought 200 pts.!!! We figured a trip every 18 months, in a one-bedroom...150 would be enough. Not!!! We already have a trip planned in August and then another one for Thanksgiving. Staying in a studio both times and borrowing 50 pts from next year. Buy more than you think you'll need.

We are new so I can only tell you our plans... we don't have enough years to really know how we are going to allocate things. I'm the Disney-o-phile in the family, my wife is less so (I'm hoping the pixie dust will soak in).

We have 100 pts -- I suspect that we will get more. When I initially planned, five nights in a studio (no weekend nights)... works just fine on that budget.

Weeelll we are taking our nieces this year, so that bumps us up to 1 bedroom. I couldn't be more excited and I think bringing friends and family will be a real joy (we are a couple of DINKs).

Adding another couple brings us to two bedrooms. At this point we are looking at 110 - 150 a year.

Now we can do this... just not every year
(Two out of every three years we can use 150 pts).

We *only* bought 160...thinking the same way you are -"we'll be FINE in a studio..." until this family of four decided, ok,I decided, to splurge a little and get a one bedroom for the Mon-Fri...

...yep, we called Member Services on Friday am, and "upgraded" to a 1bdr for the weekend too!!!

Heaven help me if I ever lay eyes on a GrandVilla....lol

We just signed for a 100 point contract at OKW and just submitted the paperwork to Disney for approval.

There is just me, my DH and my 2 year old daughter. For now that is enough for me. I'm sure there is always the desire to buy more, even if you have 500 points. So we're happy with those 100 -- in fact 100 points is very hard to find but we got lucky and jumped on it right away. I've decided I can always buy more, but if I buy a really big contract and realize that it's just way too much, it might not be good - especially if the rental market tanks in the future - for now though it's really good.

I have a friend who wants to join DVC so badly, but can't justify the cost to her husband. I admire the fact that he does not wish to finance(I wish I was as strong!), so I suggested they search for a small 50-100 point contract for a good price,and purchase that. Even counting the closing cost, it should still work out to less than $95 a point, and then they can add to thier point totals in small increments of 25-50 points through Disney for cash. They have only used points once(mine)at OKW, and they fell in love with the place. At this point, I know she would be happy going once a year for a few nights in a studio, but we all know she'll be adding on like the rest of us before long!

We originally planned to buy only 100 points resale. It was all I could talk dh into even thinking about since he wasn't going to finance the points. We ended up with 150 new at BCV but there are times I wish we had gotten more (and that we had purchased VWL but that's another topic).

I broached the topic to him the other day-- how about another 50 points-- and got some sort of non-commital grunt.

If you want to stick with the slower times in a studio for 5 days, 100 is fine, but like others said, once you start it's so tempting to add more.

We have 125 and, so far, I think that's fine. Remember: you can always add on if you need to. Far better, IMHO, to buy only an amount that you can comfortably afford for starters. Then, as the years progress, you buy more if you need them. In the meantime, however, you can start to enjoy DVC and not be overly worried about how much you have spent for points. Personally, I think the studios and one bedrooms are nice and we don't need to go every year. If you can be happy with those parameters, then YES! 100 points can be a very nice amount indeed. Good luck with your decision.

100 pts will work for some, especially those going every 2-3 years and not needing a 2 BR unit most of the time. It is somewhat restrictive. If you can afford it, I'd go with something like 150-170 pts. Rememember that the closing, etc on a resale will be about the same for all size contracts thus increasing your pp cost on the smaller one. Also if you go to resale, you'll run into the same problem. Those some will want a smaller contract, you doom yourself ot those looking mostly for add ons where a stand alone contract opens up an entire additional market of people. And in selling, most brokers have a minimum charge where your commissions might be just as much for selling 100 points as 150-170 but it depends on specifics.

Almost every year we spend about four to five nights in Disney usually in March. If we continue that way, that is how we would use it. We usually also go to the beach for a few nights right after our Disney stay. So I figure Vero Beach might work there. We only go once a year because of tight job schedules. I would like to try to go a few nights around the beginning of December occasionlly if I could, but not every year. I have seen the rooms and have no problem with a studio (even tho everyone says that would probably change). we don't spend a long amt of time there and I really prefer to eat out while I am on a few days vacation every year. And it is only my husband, my two kids, and I. We are pretty comfortable in a studio size room. (at least for now and who says we cant add more later).

Family of 3, bought 150 points in 7/2001 thinking that we would stay in a studio for a week.

Total Denial!!! We have never stayed in a studio and always go for more than 10 days. Hence the add on of 100 points in 2/2002.

Even with that I'm always borrowing from the next year!

That said I feel we need another 50 points. But financially out of the question right now!

We started with 150 pts. at VWL. Within six months we did an add-on there. Then we decided we needed another 60 pts. The only place available was BCV, and we wound up with 65 pts. I think if we could afford it, we'd buy more points because they seem to be like potato chips: you just have to keep going back for more !

...and you're so right...who says you can't add-on...??

So you can only stay Sunday-Thursday nights, you will NEVER stay the previous Saturday night or the Friday-Saturday afterward? If you are sure, then go for the 100 pts regardless of the cost. I would think, though, that you would want to stay on one of those weekend nights, which means that 100 pts won't be enough, unless you always plan to go Sept-Jan. At that time of year you could stay at OKW in a studio for 100 pts and stay the weekends, too. I assume you have no kids, or they are not in school, otherwise you will need to go summers at 11 pts per night, or the prime time when a studio is at least 15 pts per night.

I am just giving you something to think about. If you absolutely can't handle more than 100 pts, then your decision is already made for you, isn't it?

Do I think 100 point contracts can work? Sure. Do I think it is better to have more? Of course! The porblem with buying a small resale like that is the lack of flexibility. There is no way to utilize the exchange program if you should decide at some time you want to. Minimum for that would be 160 points, or the value of a 1 bedroom in prime time. (OKW costs)

We too thought we could do a studio once in awhile, so we originally purchased 230. It took one trip and much planning for us to decide we "needed" more. We added another 150 just a year later. This seems to be a good number for us. Only you will know if 100 points will be enough for you. Just sufice it to say that your "needs" will change once you have experienced DVC!
