Does anyone do this when you check into your room???

momrek06, it's 2:22 am and I can't sleep! Found this this thread again because you bumped it up :thumbsup2 and it really is funny. Even so, I'm making a list of how to dismantle a bed and all the disinfectant I need to buy before we leave in 13 days. I'm hoping in the light of day my fear of coming home with worms and bedbugs will have diminished. :sunny:

Oh,your siggie line makes me miss the statues!!!!

I like to add a sheet over the blanket at DVC, just cause it makes me feel more comfortable. The thought of bedbugs coming home with me gives me the creeps. Hopefully, they don't like living at 9400 feet altitude!

I seem to recall the 'black spots' on some matresses that were listed in the photos as 'bedbug feces' EWWWWWWWWWWWW

So while I laugh at those who lysol everything and bemoan poor Chip and Dale's plight.....I think I might be a little more careful re bug bites during the night. Again, EWWWWWWWW

Ok I'm a germ-o-phobe, but not to this extent - LOL.

One thing I do however is put the tv remote in a ziplock back to use. Weird - yes. There have been many reports shown on how people use the bathroom, don't wash their hands and then go back to using the remote to watch tv. Housekeeping often disinfects the doorknobs and phone recievers but the remotes could easily be missed. Since I have 2 small boys who put hands in their mouths all the time, so I'd hate for them to touch that and then have my 2 year old go suck his thumb - barf. Call me weird but having a thumb sucker sure has made me cautious of what he touches before his thumb goes in his mouth.

I stayed in 50 different hotels last year and have not had any problems with any type of bugs. I don't generally stay at the 'Ritz' either when I am on business travel so I have been in the locations that may have these creatures...

I think this is just a bit overblown. Why worry about it when you are on vacation!

oh great - bed bugs, cleaning... I am so not worthy :(

Does anyone remember seeing the 20/20 et el story on the whirlpool tubs? That they arent flushed, and the pipes harbor yucky germs??

Are you supposed to fill the tub to the top of the jets, put something like... vinegar????? :confused3 and run the tub for a few minutes, than you can use it worry free??

I cannot imagine bringing vinegar to wdw, but ewwww.... :surfweb:

I do take the bedspread off. I do inspect the bed the first day I am there, and have on occassion had mousekeeping come and change the sheets. I do not use the drawers, unless I bring lysol wipes to clean them. I leave most things in my suitcase if I am there for a short time and hang things up. I never walk barefoot in the room or go barefoot in the shower.

These threads crack me up.......

We arrive, throw our clothes in the drawers  and stash the duffle bags ion the floor under the sink, we walk barefoot in our room :scared: and leave the bedspreads on the beds :sad2: we even go so far as to put our butts on the toilet seat without disinfecting them first :faint:

I understand people who have immunity issues, but I think the rest are perpetuating the problems by constantly disinfecting I believe one lowers their immunity to everyday germs. I have anxiety issues but germs aren't one of them.

We must be related. Ditto

I have never checked for bugs...although this thread has my scratching like crazy. However, every time we would take DS to WDW, he would get sick while we were there. When he was little he would touch every handrail and always had his hands in/near his month.

We finally got smart and started carrying those mini purell disenfectant gel bottles in our fanny packs. Every couple of hours we each use some. No one has been sick in quite a few years. We also bring wet naps and wipe down the tables at the counterservice spots. If you don't shower or wear deodorant in the August heat, I might even Febreeze you...ha-ha!

I travel almost weekly and never had any problems. I never thought of myself as a risk taker or dare devil but I have touched the remote, slept under the spread, walked barefoot on the carpet and in the shower. I also have never had any bug bites or brought home any creatures in my suitcase. I also didn't get sick from any of this.

I have watched all those shows too but figure for every bad one they found there were probably 100 that were just fine.

Watching those shows or not, I would still be the same way. My mom is very fussy and this is how I was raised. I don't go to the extreme, but there are a few things I will not use or will clean before using. I don't see anything wrong with that, everyone is different and I don't think I have any issues or that I am

I don't think anyone is crazy either way. We are all different. I don't worry about the bed bugs, I do take off the spread, mainly as it isn't comfy to me. I also walk barefoot on the floors and shower...but MAMCATNV, I am a freak about my butt on toilets...I won't touch ANY toilet with my butt except my own (not even my parents! HAHA). I am an oddball like that.
We all have our quirks. Glad this discussion has brought so many opinions and a few laughs!

From what I understand bed bugs live in the mattresses and on the headboards. I really don't think washing the sheets will do any good. I do however rip the bedspred off the bed as soon as I get to any hotel.

I do the same thing but the next day housekeeping puts it back on and off it comes. I don't even touch it, I take a toels and use that to touch it and get it off.

We must be long lost relatives....I do the same, Ialways buy flip flops fpr the shower, never stand on the carpet,my clothes stay in the suitcases never leave them on the floor, lysol wipe the doorknobs, tv remote, never use the phone, I use my cell phone....I love vacations but usually can't wait to get back home to my own stuff. I have a screwed up ammune system so I am always careful. :cheer2:

Opposite situation:

I was staying at a cabin type resort with my family a couple of years ago. I stepped out of the shower to a scorpion on the floor :scared1:

The area was not scorpion country! I got the owner and he told me that the week before all the cabins were booked by a group of fisherman that came up from the SouthWest and that they think the scorpions came along in their luggage, this was the 2nd one that had been found.

This is how we will travel in Dec. I will bring with us lysol to spray down all the visible surfaces in our room (I have a phobia about puking) and I will spray down the sheets before we go to sleep (same reason). I will wipe down the bathroom faucets and toilet (same reason). I will carry hand wipes and purell with us (same reason and other illnesses, who wants to get sick at Disney?) I will also have water delivered to us by Staples before we arrive because I dispise water fountains (they are breeding grounds for all kinds of germs). We will all also have the flu shot before we travel if it is at all possible. I probably sound like a nervous nellie, but I am ok with the shower and my kids walking around on the carpet. My kids ride the bus to school and they participate in all activities at school so they are exposed to all kinds of stuff, but if I'm with them and can control what they are exposed to, I'll do it.

I live in Chicago, and take public transportation daily, and I groom dogs for a living. I figure if I haven't been exposed to it, it doesn't exist....and I am never sick.

After luggin' in the luggage, we usually do strip off the bedspread into a heap in a corner of the room. We check to see that the sheets look clean and then take a quick peak at the bathroom to see that it's clean. If it looks good, we unpack. At WDW, it always has looked perfect! The mousekeepers do a great job. They usually will replace the bedspreads when they service the room, but we don't let them in everyday. Usually about every 3 days, we let them in, otherwise, the do not disturb sign stays jammed in the door's card lock.

In December the word about the bedbug problems around our country's hotel rooms was starting to get out. We did check our hotel room at CSR, but of course it was fine. I would imagine that Disney is very concerned about this problem and is doing everything that it can to prevent their guests from being bugged. Maggie

Y'all should've seen my 17-month-old LICKING the beadspread a couple of weeks ago. I don't know what possesed her to do that.
