Do YOU wear Confederate apparel ?

First, thank you. I usually agree with most of your posts but this one really hit below the belt. Everyone has a right to feel what they feel and express it...whether everyone agrees with it or not. I just find it offensive that you want to label most if not all of the south as white trash and racist hillbillies. Did you mean to, I hope not but you did.

Of course I don't see all southerns that way. My nephews were born and bred in the south. I have friends in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Texas that have lived there all their lives.

If you'll read what I said, I am talking about the symbol of the flag. If I saw a young girl wearing it, my brain would say, "racist", I can't help it. She may not be one, and if I got to know her, I guess I'd find out.

I'm having a hard time picturing you flying one over your driveway -- but if you do, :confused3 , I don't get it, but as I've said, I support your right to do it. If you don't, why don't you? Is it because deep down, even though you may have some happy memories of it you know that for many people it means something quite different? This is all I'm saying.

When people make that bold statement, to wear the battle flag of a defeated cause that supported slavery, that's what it means to me. I can't help it -- I support your right to keep it as long as you want, though. Thank God we live in a country you can.

Your right, I do not have the cf flag over my driveway..never have and never will. I do realize the cf can be offensive to others and I respect that. But I do not judge others who use the cf emblem as white trash and/or racist hillbillies because I do know the cf flag was not created for that purpose.

LOL, you didn't even have to say that I already knew it! You couldn't be hateful or offensive if you tried (unlike me, I do it when I'm not even trying sometimes  )

I can't help how I feel about this issue, but I'll defend your right to see differently as long as there is a breath in my body.

Oh my, no one can kid around here -- no, honey, auntpolly does not wear a Che Guevera anything (that's why I said "seriously". I usually dress like Pat Nixon). And we can argue about communism and all of that in another thread.

And --- this is tiresome -- I've said -- how many times now, that I don't care what the little white trash high school student wants to wear in her free time. If there is a dress code, she should follow it at school.

If she doesn't care that it makes her look like a racist hillbilly, she should make any fashion statement she likes -- I don't care.

You know, I've never liked the phrase "white trash". Why not just say "trash"? The phrase "white trash" was coined at a time when just plain "trash" referred to people of color, hence the need to differentiate. And "white trash" was especially pejorative, because white folks were presumed to have a higher standard of behavior to live up to.

So I really dislike the use of that phrase.

Not to mention, you've applied it to a child that you don't even know, practically a hypothetical child, since this entire thread is based on "some girl". I don't think any of us have even sought out the original news story this thread is based on.

Edited to add: here is one story
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/05/22/ap/national/mainD8HOU0A80.shtml

She doesn't sound like a hood-wearing cross-burner to me, but clearly her belt buckle says all anyone needs to know about her character. :rolleyes2

Polly,
after much thought I think you may be right...
people should be able to wear whatever they want.
But should the Federal Goverment?
No goverment sponsored confederate symbols!!!!!
I hereby propose that so all right minded ACLU contributing people can sleep well at night that we insist that Fort Bragg's name be changed .
The thought of a military installation bearing the name of a slave monger by association is too much.
Perhaps we should change it to Fort Doe-Eyed-Dear.
I'll leave the suggestions up to someone else.

Then there is Fort Hood, Fort Pickett, Fort Stewart..and many more.
How is it that poeple can be offended by a little girl with a confederate flag on her shirt and not offended by the naming of some of our finest military bases to Confederate Generals?
I feel that this might prove the point that the vast majority of Americans believe that the Confederate flag and it's Confederate generals are worthy of respect and a large degree of admiration from the public as a whole due to their heroic efforts on the battlefield, thier love of country and more.

oohh and Lee County, Alabama and Lee County, Arkansas
Lee County, Florida
Lee County, Kentucky
Lee County, Mississippi
Lee County, North Carolina
Lee County, South Carolina
Lee County, Georgia
and Lee County, Texas.

all of them gone. Buildings removed. Citizens reprimanded ( nicely of course, so their feeling aren't hurt ) and forced to live elsewhere. Perhaps Lincoln Nebraska?

Hitler was NOT a God-fearing Catholic. If he were afraid of God, he wouldn't have starved, tortured and murdered 6-8 million people. The Catholics believe there is a rule against that...I think it is in the Top 10 of rules, actually.

Hitler a God-fearing Catholic. Don't make me open a can of Whup-Butt on you, flat. ;) (Doesn't sound quite the same saying "butt," but you get my drift.)

OT - born and raised, actually served as an altar boy. he was never excommunicated by the church. read Mein Kampf sometime.

"Therefore, I am convinced that I am acting as the agent of our Creator. By fighting off the Jews, I am doing the Lord's work."

"I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so"

there ya go, CB. :)

back to the confederate flag thingy....

Is that what Hitler said, he was doing the Lord's work? Well, color me shocked (!) that Hitler would say something both wrong and offensive. :rolleyes2 And correct me if I'm wrong (I'm not), but Nazis sent a few Catholics who said, "Hey, wait! Isn't this wrong?!" to their camps, as well.

Ya know, I'll be in Orlando next Thursday. You class me in with Hitler again and I'll make the drive to Tampa and slap you so hard it'll hurt for a week. :bitelip:

The best thing people who wear swastikas or CFs can say is, "I realize that I will hurt and offend others, and I don't care." That is the BEST thing they can say...and is rotten all on its own.

Not all hillbillies are racist, not all racists are hillbillies. I happen to like some hillbillies. Someone asked me once, "What did you call the White Trash kids in your (high) school?" She burst out laughing when I answered, "Friends." But I have never had a friend that was a racist...not that I know of, anyway. They aren't on my "Good Guys" list.

I'm not grouping you in, I was just breaking through your wall of denial. sorry the most vile person to walk the earth was raised in your church.

and we know your map reading isn't the greatest, so I doubt you'd even find Tampa. :p be sure to wear a red shirt next week in O-town and have fun. ;)

I know a few hillbillies as well, but none wear confederate flag anything.

Well, thank you so much for crumbling my wall. Who are you, anyway, Joshua?

I can find Tampa just fine...have YahooMaps, after all! :)

Red shirt? Goody, another excuse to shop! :yay: Is that another gay-people thing? I know about rainbows, triangles, and equal signs, but not red shirts.

I am very eager to see Gay Days after hearing so many things about it here on the DIS. My GUESS is that it isn't as bad as everyone says, but always like to see for myself.

We are so OT at this point that Liz is going to show up and yell at us. :)

maybe, but you'll probably be speeding so you'll end up in the Gulf.

if you've never been to Gay Days, wear a red shirt.

trust me. :)

Have to find out about this red shirt business now...
