Do you tip your mailman/garbageman/paper deliverer?

How do you even tip the garbageman? I never see them. Besides it all automated now and they just drive the truck and the arm thingy grabs the can and dumps it. Why would you tip for that?

As for mailman we have a community mailbox and never see the mailman. Even if I had door to door delivery I'm at work all day so never see them.

I use to tip the newspaper person when I got 7 day home delivery but now I read it all online.

I always find it strange when the original post date is even an issue. If people are still interested in the topic, as the new replies indicate, who cares? Besides, a whole lot of new threads are topics that cycle through every 6 months or so anyway.

If the mailman could deliver my mail without me and the other neighbors having to get together every few weeks to exchange it, I would tip him. This year was particularly bad, as 5 Christmas cards ended up at 4 different neighbors houses, and I had mail--bills, cards and even a package--end up at my house for those 4 neighbors. Good thing we're honest people--the package was from Nintendo! DH's meds now come via USPS, and we've had to fetch them from the neighbors three times now.

If the garbage/recycling guys could manage to put my recycling/trash bins back in the yard after emptying them, I would tip them. I'm in a cul de sac, in a "circle" (the road goes "L" and at the tip of the "L" is a circle, that my house and 3 others sit in). I have to usually go into the "L" road to get my cans and bins. I also pull all my neighbors bins back to their yards, as it's not just my bins that get the boot. I've seen the trash guys kick the bins, attempting to get them back to the yards. (And it's not like there isn't room-----the "pod" guys managed to get an 18 wheeler backed into my circle..)

I always tip my Fed Ex guy. He is awesome, always rings, asks how the family is doing (even DH)...he even went and signed up to be an organ donor because of us talking to him about it! He can't take cash tips, but I get him a box of chocolates (he loves these particular ones) and a gift card to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts. We see him every month, when he picks up DH's labs (and used to see him more than that, when DH's meds came via FE).

I don't tip the UPS driver, because I never see him. He doesn't ring or knock, just drops and runs.

I tip Mailman 20, garbagemen 20, Poland spring driver 20, UPS guy 10. I tip the newspaper guy all year long but give him an extra 10 at Christmas. I had a new washing machine delivered yesterday and gave them a 20 too.

I guess I'm just a scrooge...I don't doing any extra or special tipping at Christmas.

We live in a townhome complex and have a large bank of mailboxes. I have no idea who our mailman is. I never see them. They delivery while I'm at work. I also have no idea who our garbage man is. We have a private company that we pay through our homeowners fees to pick up the garbage. I have no idea who they are or even if its the same person week to week. If I don't know you personally, you don't get a tip from me. For all I know, I'd be giving the tip to the person who happens to be filling in just on that day. I don't feel bad about it either. These people all make a salary and don't need tips to survive.

We don't get a newspaper so no tipping needed there.

We don't regularly get FexEx or UPS deliveries. Even when we do, they drop, knock, and run. So, no tips from us. In fact, most Fed Ex deliveries to my house are in error and belong to the townhome complex down the road. They have done this at least 5 times in the last 6 months. I have had to either run out the door after them or call FedEx to come pick the package back up. One time it took them over a week to pick up and they only picked it up because my DH saw a FedEx truck and took it out too them. Personally, FedEx should tip me for dealing with their errors.

I will tip for furniture delivery and stuff like that if they do a good job. I will give cash and a bottle water/gatoraid. The last furniture delivery we got, the guys were really sloppy and just not careful with anything. They banged into my walls. It was a mess. It was hot that day, so they got bottled drinks, but no cash from me.

Don't worry we don't tip anyone either. Every one of those people make a good salary. If every person in our subdivision tipped $20 they would take home $60,000 in tips. Add one other route (they pick up here tues/fri and the other side of the city on mon/Thursday) they would pull in over $100,000 in tips. Sorry not happening.

I wish someone would tip me for doing what I get paid to do I love this time of year. Any other month, I have to track down my trash cans as they are dumped into the truck and then thrown to the side where they tend to roll out into the street. Not at Christmas time...they are neatly lined up right at the curb and have a nice little Christmas card from my garbage men attached to them..complete with self addressed envelope included

Wow you have horrible garbage men.

Mine gets out of the truck and picks garbage up out of yards and the street.

The company is a union shop. But who cares what he makes he earns it and does great job.

All the above mentioned workers make a better salary than I do. Why would I tip them. No one tips me for doing the job I was hired to do.

Specifically, of course not. But tipping is one of the hottest topics on any of the forums here on the DIS, so the discussion is just as current today as it was 11 years ago. Counting lurking, I've been on these boards about 12 years, and at least half the posts are nothing but reruns of things discussed in the past anyway. I'm 56 years old, I can't tell you how many times I have discussed the weather or how well I slept, tipping is one of those topics here.

In some cases I might but less likely if they are unionized.

Here a letter carrier makes around $25 per hour so I don't think I will be tipping them any time soon.
