do you tip owner of hair salon?

Is it customary to tip the owner of the hair salon if he/she cuts your hair? A long time ago my mother told me you don't but I am wondering if that has changed. The owner does charge more for a haircut than the other stylists at his salon.

That's a good question! My hairdresser just bought her own place and will now be the owner. I don't know what she plans to charge yet but if she ups her prices significantly, then I won't tip her! If her prices stay what they have been for years, then I will continue with my generous tipping... I am curious as to what the "correct" way is.

My father in law owns a hair salon and yes - he gets tipped. Although I have never heard him complain if he isn't.

Just out of curiosity why wouldn't you tip for a job well done? Does it really matter that they own the salon? Their job well done should still be acknowledged I would think. All hairdressers charge more as they get more experience because they are "mastering" their trade and are more valuable than a hair stylist that just stepped out of beauty school. Owners have even less disposable income because now they paying staff salaries, electricity/gas, phone bills and such. I am sure they appreciate having their own pocket money as well as a regular stylist.

Yes, the owner gets a tip for good service, just like everyone else. I've had my hair cut by the owner of the salon for the past eight years. She's always been tipped by everyone.

I think I undertipped last hair cut....do I just overtip next time? LOL The hair cut and color was 145.00....but she was new and it took hours!!!! Plus I wasn't totally happy with it, but not so unhappy with it that I wanted to stick around for another hour or so LOL

The owner always cuts my hair and I always tip her. I am never sure on how much though? I always give 7-10 for cut, highlight and brow wax, and 5-7 just for the cut. What percentage should you tip?

The salon I work at the original owner didn't take tips. He would refuse them. His partner accepted tips. The current owner accepts tips. As a stylist I think it's ok to not tip the owner. Especially if it is a big salon with a lot of stylists. If it was a small- one or two chair salon I would still tip, because their potential for profit is much smaller.

Just my opinion. No set rules really.

I do tip my hairdresser but she is not the owner/proprietor and I would if she was the owner.

I usually tip between 8 and 10 percent, depending on how long I have to sit there. My hairdresser is the owner and she accepts tips. But I have been going to her for 15 years.

When I do people at home I don't accept tips. I also don't have a full on salon in my house. Most of the time people tip me anyway. I do say no thank you and try to give it back. But a lot of times if they write a check they put in extra. They tell me it is because i charge a discounted price and so they are saving money even with the tip. For example: my salon charges $40 for a cut and blow dry. At home I charge $25. So if they tip $5 on top they still saved money. But like I said, I'm up front about not wanting a tip at my house. At the salon on the other hand I don't refuse.

Also most tips are between 15-20% just like a restaurant.

At one point I was having my hair done by someone at their house. They left the salon to start a home business. I was used to tipping her so on my first visit, I tipped. She flat out refused it explaining to me that coming to someone's home is sometimes inconvenient and not as nice as a salon atmosphere. She felt that by me following her to her home was enough.

I now go to a different salon...I moved. I do go to the owner. I just don't tip as much as would otherwise. Just had a cut and color (single process no highlights) and it was $65. I tipped salon owner $10 and shampoo girl $5.

I do not tip my hairstylist, who is self-employed, each time she does my hair. I do however give her a generous tip at Christmas, whether I am having my hair done at that time or not.

I've always heard you don't tip the owner. I tried at my most recent place because it felt weird, but it was refused immediately. I must have looked surprised because one of the hairdressers whispered, "She's the OWNER!" and looked at my like I had two heads for trying...

Hallmark stores used to sell a small wallet-sized card which gave suggested tip amounts for almost anything and everything. On this topic, it said you do not tip the salon owner. I also was told years ago by my previous stylist, who owned the salon, the only tip owners expect is good "word of mouth" from their clients. I've been with my current stylist for over 20 yrs, and when she opened her own place a few years ago she still continued to accept tips. So, I guess it is very individual.

I had highlights, cut and dry from an owner once...220$ later.
I don't think I tipped...at the time I was just so outraged at the 220 price that I paid and left. Thankfully later I learned not tipping the owner was in fact acceptable. I knew the service would be expensive but 220! Good grief.
I now pay 120 for highlights, cut and dry. Plus a 20 dollar tip to my dresser and 2-3$ for the newbie shampoo girl. I once had a VERY GOOD shampoo women....(not a young girl) who did a great wash and I tipped her very well. My favorite part is having someone else wash my hair.

I work in a booth rent salon, and our owner accepts tips. Well, I've never seen her refuse one, so I'm guessing most clients are tipping her. She doesn't pay salaries, but she covers all the costs of keeping the business open, advertising, etc. Of course, our rent goes to some of that.

I usually receive (and tipped before I got everything done gratis ) 15-20% of the total. I've had the odd person tip less or quite a bit more, and ocassionally some people don't tip at all. My family is the best and worst. I offer to do everything for free or for whatever change they have in their pocket. Some take it for free, but my grampa tips 400%. Yes, you read that right.

Do what makes you feel comfortable. If s/he did a good job, and you think a tip is deserved, go for it. If you're a stickler for social rules, don't. S/he is most likely aware of the "rule" and probably won't mind either way.

the salon owner has insurance, pays 401ks, vacations, rent, shop supplies, the receptionist....and the list goes on and on...
