do you tip owner of hair salon?

Here's an article on About.com:

Yes, you should tip the owner of a salon. Times have changed and it's now protocol to tip the salon owner, who these days has a lot of overhead costs and has to pay a staff a salary and probably benefits as well. The appropriate tip amount is 20 percent, minus tips for assistants (about $5 for the person who washes your hair and another $5-$10 for the person who dried it). Facials are usually considered a separate service and it's protocol to tip 20 percent to a facialist.

I get my hair cut by the owner of the salon and whenever I've tried to tip, the cashier returns it saying that she doesn't accept tips b/c she is the owner. :confused3

My wife is a hairdresser and states , you do not tip the owner. Every owner of hair salons know this. Its taught in hair dressing school.
Hope this helps

I believe ettiquet sp? says, no for tipping of salon owner.
I had highlights, cut and dry from an owner once...220$ later.
I don't think I tipped...at the time I was just so outraged at the 220 price that I paid and left. Thankfully later I learned not tipping the owner was in fact acceptable. I knew the service would be expensive but 220! Good grief.
I now pay 120 for highlights, cut and dry. Plus a 20 dollar tip to my dresser and 2-3$ for the newbie shampoo girl. I once had a VERY GOOD shampoo women....(not a young girl) who did a great wash and I tipped her very well. My favorite part is having someone else wash my hair.

I don't know where you live, but that's how much I always pay - $70 for just a cut alone! And I tip 15 - 20%, and the shampoo girl gets $5.

I do. He has never stopped me. Not sure about whether I am supposed to or not.

I have also heard you don't but I have.

I believe in tipping my service providers and even if the hairstylist is the owner, he or she is providing me a service and I tip accordingly.
