Do You Take Your Dog Into Stores With You?

The rule is guide dogs only folks, what part of that don't you get? Except the pet stores of course.

The problem is, that is not the rule for a good amount of stores. Maybe 10-20 yrs ago it was, but it isn't now. That rule certainly pertains to stores where food is served - but when you are talking about some place like the Home Depot where I work currently, that is not the rule at all. In fact I see several people shopping with their dogs, big and little, on a daily basis and I have yet to, as the poster above me so delicately put, clean up the crap left behind.

But like I said - maybe it's just Richmond. As I said it was voted one of the most animal friendly cities in the country.

Just so you know, for people with severe allergies, hypo-allergenic dogs still cause problems. They still produce dander, though not as much as other dogs.

Maybe not the Home Depot where you are BUT the Sarasot HOME DEPOT on CATTLEMAN....has specific signs in the door that SEEING EYE DOGS are the only animals allowed....as do most Florida HD stores......we have quite a few in the company that can attest to this.

Do people ignore it and think they are above the rules cuz it a "warehouse" ab-so- freak-in lutely.....sickining!

Well, as I said before that isn't how it is here in this state so maybe it's a local thing.

Oh.. and thanks EVER so much for calling me ab-so-freak-in lutely sickining for taking my dog to a Home Depot.

She was referring to people who blatantly disregard POSTED rules.

If your community allows it, so be it, but I'm glad I don't live there. Can't stand animals to be honest!

I wasn't calling you that...but the people here...think they are so above the rules....

and as a cashier or someone working in garden...I don't want someones stange and unfamiliar dog licking and jumping all over me...it happens daily because people think they are above the rules.....

they are alwyas asked to leave - they spout how they can shop at Lowe's!!

lily, I apologize that I jumped to conclusions that you were referring to me in your post. After I reread it I realized you weren't passing judgement on me for doing what the company allows and that you were talking about your specific location.

As much as I love animals, I dont think people should take them into stores (besides Petsmart). And even if they are the teeny weeny accessory dogs all the hottie girls are carrying now, they should stay home too. People crack me up sometimes. They would rather leave their kids home sometimes more then their dods. Well...maybe the dogs are more well behaved.

and - Obi Wan - that is GREAT that VA is so dog friendly! My sister has a tea cup chic...yet we al grew up with (and I still have ) Rotties!! My sis thinks that everyone caters to chich....even WDW...she is amazed when she gets turned down.

Don't get me wrong...I love dogs, I even tried to like the skunk - my issue is the entitlement factor....it certainly isn't the animals fault they are being drug around!! I have many a nice dog in town especially at Paw Park!

and BTW - Richmond is about the only place north of FL....that I love!! so nice there...I love the lit luminaries around the fall!

I bet the chihuahua tries to boss the Rotties around too.. :rotfl: Most little dogs have no idea what their true size is.

You know, we understand we live in a city that is not quite the norm as far as pets are concerned and we would never think of going into a store with Reilly outside of our normal routine unless we called them and asked them first.

I guess what I was getting so upset over is the fact that Reilly is more than welcomed in the stores we go to and when we don't have him with us it is not unusual for someone to ask where he is. I felt like I was being criticized for doing something that is so ordinary and everyday around here. I guess I just didn't realize how "not normal" that is in the other parts of the country.

yes they do! She just got a boy too! We had a mini daschund which was marked liked a rottie and he just thought he was one of them! I think all dogs have such a personality! Cats and other animals do too I'm sure but we tend to stick with dogs!

Richmond really does look beautiful during the fall and Christmas holidays. :) I love the way the houses are done here at Christmas. I'm not from this area - I moved here from Georgia in '99. I have to admit, I love it. Mountains to the west of you, beach to the east and DC an hour and a half north. Gotta love the location. Now if only the people in Manassas hadn't mess up that chance to get a Disney park all those years ago.. ;)

Right now Maxine goes in only to Pet Stores and our complex office which is pet friendly. I really wish more stores were pet friendly. Obi-Wan your community sounds like a dream. There are so many more people now that see their pets as members of the family and they want to be with them as much as they can. Since there are people who "don't like" animals  I think they could post signs that animals are present and then the consumer can choose to shop there or not. I think they'd be surprised with the support they'd get. I understand the allergy aspect but not just the "I dont' like animals" The animals are leashed and I know people aren't just going to run up to you and ask you to hold their dog or something. As to the OP I'd never dream of taking my dog (a big lab) into a store that didn't expressly allow them.

Reminds me of a reverse of that Disney movie.. what is it called.. I can't remember ARG. It was about a Great Dane that thought it was a Daschund because it grew up as a puppy with a bunch of Dauschunds. Nevermind.. my mind has so totally lost the name of that movie now.. :rotfl:

And you are right - all animals are wonderful creatures and have great personalities, but dogs are definitely the best ;) :::looking around for a cat person getting ready to thwap me::::

After reading these boards for so long and doing so few posts, I know that I am taking a risk here. Most people on these boards seem to love pets. I don't like animals. C'mon everyone...They are animals...not people. The fact that Universal Orlando is so welcoming of pets is a big problem for me.
I would be disgusted (and am disgusted) by seeing animals brought to so many places. Leave them home. They are not "your children"...ie, not people and never will be.
My mother visited us last year and wanted to get together with an old friend. My mother was staying with us. Her friend had the nerve to call me and say "I would love to visit with your mother. I take my dog everywhere I go. You know I am a clean person and that my pet would be clean. Your mother said that you would never permit an animal in your home. I would love to visit your mother, but she said I could not bring my dog. What a shame that I can't visit your mom because you are so rigid about the animal thing."
I told her that my mother was correct. There is no way I would permit an animal into my home.
Can you believe that they did not get together because I said that I would not allow the animal into my home. We are all allergic to dogs and cats. However, that issue aside, I would still not ever allow a pet into my home. I don't lile them. Yuck. My choice.
If the woman could not leave her home without the dog...how is that my problem?
Please understand, people have preferences and rules and mine say tha animals are not welcome.
WHen I am in the mall or stores, I find it revolting that pets are there too. They are not people! Leave them home or get pet sitters.
Just my opinion.

Gasp! I thought I was the last person on the planet who didn't like animals. Completely agree with everything you said.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one that doesn't like pets in the store. :thumbsup2

I recall a few months ago that a girl got bit pretty bad on the lip by a dog in a local Petco. She was just petting the dog in a pet store. Seemed harmless enough, but she was attacked. Sad.

I found a link to the story:
