Do You Take Your Dog Into Stores With You?

Gasp! I thought I was the last person on the planet who didn't like animals. Completely agree with everything you said.

I don't care for animals either. I like to see them at the zoo, at the farm, etc., but I don't want to own them and I really don't like dogs at all. I just don't find anything cute about being licked on the face by something that just licked it's own butt :lmao: Oh, and before someone chimes in with the "dogs mouths are cleaner than humans" that's a huge myth ;)

After reading these boards for so long and doing so few posts, I know that I am taking a risk here. Most people on these boards seem to love pets. I don't like animals. C'mon everyone...They are animals...not people. The fact that Universal Orlando is so welcoming of pets is a big problem for me.
I would be disgusted (and am disgusted) by seeing animals brought to so many places. Leave them home. They are not "your children"...ie, not people and never will be.
My mother visited us last year and wanted to get together with an old friend. My mother was staying with us. Her friend had the nerve to call me and say "I would love to visit with your mother. I take my dog everywhere I go. You know I am a clean person and that my pet would be clean. Your mother said that you would never permit an animal in your home. I would love to visit your mother, but she said I could not bring my dog. What a shame that I can't visit your mom because you are so rigid about the animal thing."
I told her that my mother was correct. There is no way I would permit an animal into my home.
Can you believe that they did not get together because I said that I would not allow the animal into my home. We are all allergic to dogs and cats. However, that issue aside, I would still not ever allow a pet into my home. I don't lile them. Yuck. My choice.
If the woman could not leave her home without the dog...how is that my problem?
Please understand, people have preferences and rules and mine say tha animals are not welcome.
WHen I am in the mall or stores, I find it revolting that pets are there too. They are not people! Leave them home or get pet sitters.
Just my opinion.

I agree with everything, except I actually like pets, just not at my house or at a public store. The thought of having a pet in a food store, such as Godiva, is especially revolting. Doesn't that violate a health code or two? I would NEVER buy from there, and one reason I don't buy food at bake sales is because I've seen one too many cats walking on people's kitchen counters. Ewww, gross. It's nice that people like their pets, but they are not people, they are not babies. They are animals.

There was one lady who would pick her grandson up at pre-school last year and always bring her puppy into the school building. The problem with that was that my son is extremely allergic to dog licks, and that dog would come right up to him. I told that woman so many times to keep the dog away from my son, but she never did. The funny thing was the woman acted like the dog. The dog would prance around, the granny would prance around. If the woman had a tail, she would have wagged it. She was ridiculous. I think anyone who carries around a little dog like a handbag looks ridiculous.

I used to work in a small pharmacy and a lady actually brought her golden retriver in!!!

She seemed pretty miffed when I told her the dog would ahve to wait outside!!!

but come on a golden retriver in a drug store!!!

it was a beutiful dog but just didnt belong in a drug store!!

service dogs are another story--they have a job to do and do it!!
those dogs are remarkable!!!

by the way that movie is called "the ugly dauchaund"

that movie is so funny---the trouble the puppies would get into and poor Brutus!!!

THAT'S IT!

Thank you so much! :) My mind was working overtime trying to remember that..lol

And for the record, we would never dream of taking Reilly into a drug store - that and any store with food is completely off limits and we would never assume we could bring him in there.

No, the health codes are based on businesses that do food prep and service or have unpackaged food out to be handled by the public (like self service candy bins)

The Godiva company themselves made the decision to allow dogs in this location - it wasn't just the manager or employees there that decided it. You can tell which stores have a policy about pets being allowed vs. those that allow it to be decided by the individual manager running the store. Those stores that have corporate direction have a special sticker in their windows declaring them pet friendly so that you know you can take your pet in there without having to ask.

Where we live Dogs, both big and small, can go almost anywhere and it is very common to walk into a Restaraunt and there be a dog under the table. Europeans love their pets. Occaisionally we take Roosevelt out with us.

Most Godiva's have unpackaged chocolates and samples available. I would think that would violate health standards. Do the pet friendly stores not have these. I wouldn't buy chocolates at a store that let animals in, regardless.

I'm not a big Godiva eater so I don't know how their other stores operate but this one has all of it's chocolates in glass cases and only the employees can access them to get them for the customers and if they were giving out samples they were bring out a tray and hand it to the customer. The tray wasn't left out for people to help themselves. So, no violations of health standards there. :confused3 No different than the small snack aisle at PetsMart where they sell candy and sodas. - or is this just a Richmond thing too? LOL

If they allow pets, then that's probably why they dont' have the edibles out in the open. Our Godiva has chocolate covered strawberries on a tray for purchase out in the open and some other open sample items.

Honestly I can't even comprehend that! My personal belief is that animals belong in nature and not in human households, thought I'll admit it's not one shared by many people.

Ahh.. and there in lies the difference. I guess the businesses that decide to go along with the pet friendly atmosphere in Richmond alter their business to make it work. And since I don't normally go out of state to see the same things I can see 5 miles from my house, I don't know how stores in other locations are run. I just go by what I see in my area and apparently they purposely cater to animal lovers.

Hmmm.... maybe this is a Virginia thing. We frequently see dogs in our trips to Lowes and Home Depot, and occasionally take our lab. When we do, we keep him right beside us on a short leash and don't let him sniff anybody (or anything) unless someone stops us and asks if they can pet him which happens OFTEN. It certainly isn't my intention to offend anyone .....

Yeah, probably not the most popular opinion. Let's face it, dogs have been man's companion since pretty much the beginning of time. If you hate animals, hey - that's fine by me. Just don't belittle me because I love my dogs. Respect goes both ways and if I respect your beliefs, I hope that you will respect mine as well.

Don't worry PlutoPony - I just recently found out that us Virginians are apparently a rare breed when it comes to our pets ;)

Aren't you scared that your dog might bite someone that you let pet it? I think if I had a dog, that would be my fear.. my dog would bite someone and I would get sued.

I've seen people carrying tiny dogs in their arms or purses in different stores and indoor business establishments, but I can't say I've seen too many dogs like mine there. (He's a pretty big dog.)

The only store I've ever taken Max to is the pet store where he's welcomed. And he's been to the flea market shopping, but no indoor malls.

Beginning April 1 of this year, smoking will be banned in almost all public places in New Jersey. A lot of towns are passing zoning ordinances that will allow outdoor seating for restaurants and pubs to skirt that law.

I don't know about that because I'm not a smoker, but many of the same places are talking about allowing people to bring their pets out to eat too. We may give it a whirl at our favorite little Italian place because Max loves to people watch. :)

I think it's pretty fair to assume you don't know much about dogs then, huh? If you did, you'd not have this opinion.

Obi Wan Whateverhisnameis is right - respect goes both ways. There are now two threads with you bashing God's creation and it's getting old. I don't get frustrated with people on this board often but this is getting ridiculous. Esp since it's an uneducated opinion.

Not if it was my lab - your worst fear with her would be that she'd lick you to death. ;)

In answer to the OP, our city is not very pet friendly. I wish it were - it would make my time more efficent if we could run errands while out at the vet or groomer. I take them to a groomer and vet pretty far from our house (for quality reasons) so I could get more done if I could stop in some places on the way to and from!

We do have a kickin' dog park, though.

There are some places, like Home Depot and Lowes, that allow dogs - we haven't taken them there, though. I have eaten at outdoor places with Harley before, and always ask management first and have someone else go in. Same with sitting on the patio at Starbucks - always ask first and sit away from others just in case. And of course PetCo and PetsMart.
