Do you put things "away" or "up"

I put things "away". I have never heard of putting things "up". I was born and raised in WI and have lived in MN for the past 20 years.

I use "put away" in the cleaning up sense, as in "Put away your legos". To me, "put up" is a catch-all for canning/freezing/preserving fresh foods for off-season eating, as in "I put up a batch of jam". I'm Michigan born and raised, but with a few odd southern linguistic habits picked up from spending summers in VA as a child.

Same for me.

(I was raised in upstate New York, and live in Massachusetts now.)

Picking something "up" means putting things away- putting something "up" means LITERALLY putting it up and out of reach. We say both- depending on what you are doing. We live in Maine.

i'm from NE alabama, and, like minkydog said, i "put things up", and pretty much anything that's carbonated is "coke". not coca-cola, just coke. i "go get groceries" or "go buy groceries" and say "c'mere". i also "take pictures".

Yep, GA here and this is all what we say, too.

I've lived many places but mostly midwest. When I drink beer people say "Man, you can really put those away". To which I reply: Put up, or shut up.;)

I put things "away." Only, sometimes I don't and it's a really bad habit I'm trying to break.

I was born and raised in Michigan, but now live (since middle school) in Kentucky.

put away is an action taken after one would....

1) pick up something

2) put up what ever one preserved for future consumption

formally from NJ

NC here! I put things up, and clean up my house or clean my house up.
Soda is "drink", most of the time Pepsi.

Another one is "breakfast, lunch and Supper" Dinner is large meals (Thanksgiving Dinner, etc).

Totally agree with this! Born and raised in WI and now living in IL.

Living in New Orleans currently, born and raised in Florida by a Northern Mom and a Southern father so I say both. Usually it is up... unless I am really irritated and then I turn into my mom with the put it away now.

I drink Soda, eat dinner, take pictures, and go grocery shopping.
