Do you put things "away" or "up"

I"m born and bred in the South. I put things "up". Unless I'm "fixing" to put things "up." And I don't ever drink "soda"--its "Coke", no matter what's in the can.

I guess I am bilingual as I use both terms with no rhyme or reason to any particular situation. I had no idea it was a regional thing. But I lived in both the north and south during my youth so have some funky things going on with how I speak sometimes.

SC here! Up works for me! We don't add "ing" to a lot of words:
swimmin
fixin
cookin
goin
playin
shoppin

We also go uptown, even when the ground is flat!:rotfl2:

I say "away" (born and raised in SE Michigan), but my dad says "up" (raised in N Florida.)

I use "put away" in the cleaning up sense, as in "Put away your legos". To me, "put up" is a catch-all for canning/freezing/preserving fresh foods for off-season eating, as in "I put up a batch of jam". I'm Michigan born and raised, but with a few odd southern linguistic habits picked up from spending summers in VA as a child.

I'm from Long Island and definately put things "away". Another question, do you "make" pictures or "take" pictures. Here in NY, we take pictures.

I don't understand. When I read "make pictures", it's as if you made them, like an artist painting something. And when it's "take pictures", it means you're taking a picture with a camera. Or at least that's the way I see it...

I agree. I never heard of "making pictures" until I started reading Disboards!!!

I come from a long line of NY press photographers and they all "make pictures"

i'm from NE alabama, and, like minkydog said, i "put things up", and pretty much anything that's carbonated is "coke". not coca-cola, just coke. i "go get groceries" or "go buy groceries" and say "c'mere". i also "take pictures".

A photographer actually does "make" a photograph. Folks who "take" a photograph whip out their cameras, point it at something, and snap the button. A photographer would frame the composition, adjust the white balance, set the aperture for how much they want in focus, set the shutter to complement the chosen aperture for the exposure level wanted, focus the lens, and press the shutter button, thus "making" the photograph.

South Georgia here and all of the above ::yes::

I'm from NY and I always said "away". My Mom, who is from Virginia, always said "up" and I was always..:confused3

I'm from Long Island and I put things "away" but we "pick up" or clean our rooms.

Example: "Go pick up your room and put your toys away!"

Now, I don't know if "pick up your room" is regional or because my Great Grandmother was from England and we just picked that up from her. I tend to pronounce some words differently than the typical long island accent and use sayings that aren't also typical because of my GG.

Here in Kentucky, I put things up, I take a picture, I drink a Coke (no matter the brand) or a soft drink and I stand in line, not on line.

Did that cover everything?
