Just wondering how others use the PM

I've used it a couple of times for messages of no interest to the general public, such as "Gee, I grew up in your neighborhood" or the like.

Anywhoo, I am just adding that I was shocked lately reading about people posting how they were receiving not so nice PMs. I was just wondering how people use the feature.

I've joined a few exchanges on the community board, and sometimes I do offer information to people, that may not be of interest to everyone. Someone on the Flower and Garden board went back and forth with me, teaching me how to post pictures! Dan Murphy helped on that one as well on the technical board, not PM.

I have used the PM often when I wanted to ask a poster something specific that I thought was not of interest to the general board public.

Also to thank people if they did something nice. Fortunately, I've had the opportunity to do this often.

And I have to admit, I've used it to clear up some misunderstandings if I see a thread going personal or if it looks like I offended someone.

I've Pm'd DIS friends to see when they'll be in the world next, arrange meets, tree swaps, etc.

I use it for personal exchanges not of interest to the board in general. Sometimes there'll be Q&A's about some feature of one of my DVC computer programs, or I'll get into technical issue, or someone will come back with a specific question regarding one of my posts and we'll discuss something via PM's. Finally I'll use it just for some chit-chat to discuss things.

You didn't put in your poll about regular E-mails, but to answer anyway I'll get regular e-mails that posted through the DIS boards on occassion where people select the 'send an e-mail to someone' instead of 'send a pm to someone'. This is usually where someone needs a question answered and they don't have their own e-mail on the DIS boards turned on, so that way I'll get their regular e-mail address that I can reply to. Also it's necessary to use regular e-mail if sending attachments since the PM's don't have that capability.

Posted to offer support to those who get unfairly and unduly flamed by rude people.
Posted lots to one particular flamer to try to help him be less caustic in his posts..or to at least not call other posters hurtful names, but it was pretty much in vain.

I like having it as a communication option, and I use it occasionally...just not to often. I don't believe it is a truely private way to communicate with other posters. E-mail through a personal account is the way to go if you want to send a real PM to share personal information/opinion. I realize there are likely to be PM cliques, but I don't have time for that. As far as the nasty PM's...I've received a few from the mickey militia, but never felt the need to initiate one. I can usually get my point across within the problematic thread. There are many who just go ballistic if you say anything that could be viewed as anti-Disney/DVC...but sometimes you have to rinse the pixie dust out of your eyes in order see things clearly.

Everybody who posts here enjoys DVC in his/her own way.

I only use it to communicate with my DIS friends. Especially coordinating a meet, advice on trip plans, general "how ya' doing" sort of things. I try my best to stay away from all the drama and cannot imagine ever cursing at anyone! I'm a nice DISer and plan to stay that way!

I am very shy and dont have anyfriends here, but will happily PM anyone who PMs me.

I've used it on other boards where I know people better, but here on the DIS I don't really know anyone so, no.

I have used it the times I have rented points out.

We have used it to rent points. Also I've offered information to other people looking to rent points about how it worked for us. Sometimes people get "testy" about the point rental process so I just use the PM to avoid any problems.

PM's are a great way to get to know more about someone than shows up on the boards. It is also a great way to clear up misunderstandings by those of us who are really dumb at any given moment (yes I mean me Dr. T).
