Do you lick your fingers?

You would seriously get up from your meal in a restaurant 8 - 10 times to go blow your nose in the restroom? This isn't an occasional thing for her, it is every single meal.

Seems suspect.

In any case, I suppose she isn't getting up and washing her hands after she blows her nose while eating. She just goes back to eating :confused3 Yeah. Gross.

Does the same thing happen while she is cooking? Does she handle food, blow her nose, and go right back to cooking?

At this point, it really isn't about manners. It's general cleanliness.

The idea that someone blowing their nose is something that makes other people ill, is also something that I don't understand either.

Do not blow your nose while people are eating. You don't understand that? Excuse yourself and go to the bathroom. Blow your nose. Wash your hands. Return to table. This is basic manners.

I was taught not to eat with my bowling hand because it could lessen the grip & impact my game :lmao:

OMG me too! I have seriously ruined my score after eating an order of bowling alley fries (they are the best), with my right hand.

Really, you think I'm lying about the 8-10 times during a meal that she blows her nose? It's the truth whether or not you choose to believe me. I can't do anything about that.

Yes, she continues eating the food on her plate without getting up to go and wash her hands. It's her food. On her plate. No one else is eating from it.

She doesn't cook. She has never enjoyed cooking, and she is at the point in her life where she doesn't have to.

If people are so grossed out by the fact that she blows her nose at the table in a restaurant then they just don't have to look. She is a quiet blower, and if a person is not looking right at her they wouldn't even know she's blowing her nose. And even if they do look and are so offended by it, so what. We all have different levels of "grossness." :)

The idea that someone blowing their nose is something that makes other people ill, is also something that I don't understand either. Are you saying that you don't ever have to blow you nose or that you can contain a sneeze. Or that it's better to sit there sniffing back all that stuff because it isn't proper to blow your nose .

I will just respond for myself on this topic.

It has absolutely nothing to do with manners. It just makes me feel physically ill to hear/watch someone blow their nose. It's just something about snot. I just feel the urge to vomit and get completely grossed out. I have no idea why and other things (blood, vomit, gas) do not really bother me at all.

I don't know why you and so many others find it so difficult to understand that certain things gross other people out.

I grew up in a home where medical procedures and farm animal details were acceptable dinner conversation. Others hear mention of anything "gross" and can't eat. Just because it doesn't bother me doesn't mean that I can't see where it would bother others. Therefore, we refrain from certain topics when guests are present.

You're free to blow your nose wherever you like, but it is going to make me feel sick and likely unable to finish my meal. I will not say anything and will be discrete about my disgust, but I am going to think you are rude.

I'm not judging anyone based on irrelevant socially imposed etiquette rules. I'm judging that public nose-blowers are rude because they are not giving consideration to those around them. Smoking is not inherently rude, but choosing to light up in a confined space with others is rude because that person is only considering their own wants/needs without giving any thought to how their behavior affects those around them.

My mother has a sinus issue, anytime she eats hot food her nose runs. She blows her nose 8 - 10 times during a meal. Some of the people here think it's "gross" if someone blows their nose at the table in a restaurant. If she went to the restroom every time she needed to blow her nose she'd never finish her meal! Thankfully her family and friends understand and don't judge her. Plus she is a quiet and discrete nose blower. :)

It is very common for your nose to run (sometimes like a faucet) when you eat hot/spicy food. It happens to me. I still don't blow my nose at the table in a restaurant. Period.

I feel like MIGrandma must be talking about a runny nose like what EMom mentions, a clear water-like substance that runs. In that case, sure, quietly dab your nose with a tissue to make sure nothing drips out. But for a full mucous-y gurgling-snot nose blow--- please leave the table.

If I had to do more than dab my nose quietly....If I had to actually blow snot into a Kleenex at the table 8-10 times during a meal in the presence of my loved ones, then I flat out would not go out to eat. They might love me and even keep quiet, but they would be grossed out. And the people at the next table don't love me and would certainly be grossed out. I don't need to go out to eat to survive. My snotty, runny nose would not trump the rights of other diners to a pleasant, mucus free meal.

I have sinus and allergy issues. There are periods during which we skip restaurants and movies because I'm either sneezing or coughing. My issues should not negatively impact the enjoyment of others. I show some courtesy and stay away.

Only on here have I heard you can't blow your nose at the table.

I understand it grosses some people out but I really don't think it is a majority of the people out there. Just tabbing your nose is not going to stop your nose from running either.

Everyone blows their nose it is nothing to be ashamed of. :lmao: I blow my nose when needed period. If it was that bad and stuffed up I wouldn't go out but just like someone said if the food is spicy my nose is going to run.

Can't say I eat a fancy places either.

I agree.

In addition to not putting my elbows on the table, not licking my fingers, & putting my napkin in my lap, I was also taught that it is rude to blow your nose at the table & that blowing your nose at the table is considered to be poor manners.

Etiquette ... it really is a thing.

And people can do whatever they like & eat however they like.

But, even in our modern, contemporary times, there are still certain things that, if done, are considered to be poor manners.

Parents used to teach their children proper etiquette and basic manners. But a lot of parents don't teach their kids any more or don't feel it's important to do so.

DH's much younger brother when he was in college was elected to one of the national honor societies & then, subsequently, he was nominated for one of the officer positions. Before he & the other officers could begin their "term" which would include travel to many different colleges & universities, they had to attend an "etiquette" class where they were instructed on various topics such as "meets & greets" & table manners.

As "fussy" as it sounds, correct etiquette & basic manners are still important.

:scared:

Please believe me when I say this is not just a "DIS Thing". This is very basic manners.

Everyone passes gas as well. Would you sit at a table and pass gas?

Your mother needs to get that checked out. This is not normal. AND if she had to blow her nose at the dining table 8-10 times during a meal, I would seriously feel sick and would not be able to continue my own meal.

Well I am in my 50's and was never told not too. Mind you when we were younger we never went out to eat like we do today. Not as if I do it every time I go out. No I don't pass gas at the table , never had the need either. Maybe one day it will surprise me. :lmao:

I guess I'm a redneck. I don't even set the table full at home. If we won't be using it it stays in the drawer. No napkins either. Might grab a paper towel if need be. But we do sit at the table everynight as a family. Guess I'm not teaching my kids right either. Just doing what I was brought up with.

Ha! Weird question! But I'm sitting at a swim meet (if any of you has a kid who swims, you KNOW how long these can be!) and the lady next to me opened the top of her yogurt and started swiping what was on top with her finger and licking it off her finger. She must've done it 5-6 times. I am totally grossed out by finger licking in general, but especially out in public! Yuck! Am I the only one, or do you all think it's totally gross?!

This thread is cracking me up!

Um, for the OP question...I don't think I do it often in public. Eating ribs or wings - yes I lick my fingers. Same for something like an icecream sandwich or something, or "fair food" (like corn dogs and funnel cakes and what have you). I don't do it all the time. At home, it's whatever. I don't really think about it I guess? Obviously I would act different at a fancy restaurant than at a sports meet up. As for the yogurt licking in general...I'm assuming she had a spoon, so why not get the lid clean faster by scraping it onto the spoon? I'm more offended at the time wasted than the finger licking. Lol

She has brought it up with her doctor. He won't give her anything for it because of all the other medications she takes so she just has to put up with it.

And for all of the ones here who would "seriously feel sick and not be able to continue eating their own meal" if they see someone at another table quietly blowing their nose (not loudly and "honking" like my Grandfather used to do when he blew his nose :) ) maybe you should be paying attention to your own table/family and not being so concerned over what others are doing at their table.

Hey. I get it. I am still learning new things every day. We are all brought up differently. But there are social norms that should be followed. And not blowing your nose where people are eating is one of them. Maybe teach your kids that for a dinner interview or out on a date. Or, frankly, any restaurant setting. You will be doing them a favor. At home, anything goes. Fine. We practice these manners at our home. But it is most important when you are out and about. Very important.

And, I do admire you for sitting at the table every night as a family. I am working on it. We need to slow down and make dinner as a family a priority, even if it means we eat a bit later when everyone is home.

That reminds me of a story a relative told me. He was in a large room with a bunch of people. Everybody was standing. He couldn't hold it any longer and knew a fart was coming. He had the brilliant idea that he could kick the wall at the same time as he farted and nobody would notice. Unfortunately, his timing was off. He kicked the wall. Everybody looked at him, then he farted.

I just died. :P lol

My husband graduated college in 2005 with his accounting degree and part of the requirement was a business luncheon the students had to attend and learn proper etiquette. He was 36 at the time, so nothing new for him, he actually thought it was pretty funny.

As for me-I really have no idea if I lick my fingers in a restaurant. I'm thinking I don't..but I have to say I wouldn't notice it if someone else did, unless it was a full on finger sucking.

Nose blowing, I would not do.

The only thing that grosses me out is seeing band aids on people's fingers. I have a thing-I know it's not normal, I know it's weird, but yuck. Ugh, ugh, ugh, total appetite killer.
