Do you lick your fingers?

This reminds me about the other night. We were out bowling and I was completely grossed out by the guy in the next lane who had buffalo wings. He would be eating wings, and then when it was his turn he would lick the sauce off, go bowl, come back and repeat :crazy2: . I made every attempt to avoid the ball he used. I'm all about the wet wipes.

In high school biology class, we had a lab in which we scraped our fingertips and under our nails both before and after washing hands. We then examined and identified what we found. I'm pretty sure that no one in that lab ever licked their fingers again.

So no, I never lick my fingers and one of my crosses to bear in this life is that my dd bites her nails. I literally cannot watch her do it because it grosses me out so much.

Stupid, I agree! This woman will be the first to blame the yogurt or some other item as having been "bad" or "off" when she gets noravirus.

Not a germophobic - and I have no problems licking my fingers. I was raised old school. My (now 92 year old) Mom said, "you have to eat a peck of dirt before you die." I have built up a resistance and I very, very seldom (if ever) get sick.

We also eat cookie dough and lick the cake batter bowl.

We do as well:thumbsup2

You do know that dirt eaters get norovirus too right? Direct transmission from surfaces to hands to mouth. Very few people have a genetic resistance to it. It's not like other illnesses where you can build up immunity.

Whether she gets it or not is one thing. Most likely though, she'll blame the "bad" yogurt versus her habits such as sitting on bleachers, having her hands get in it, and then delivery it straight to her mouth versus yogurt lid finger sucking.

I find it gross, especially when someone cuts a slice of cake, licks their fingers, repeats for the next person, etc. Really? Yes, it's disgusting, but it's also a great way to spread germs. A lot of people think they don't have any germs if they're not sick. It's a pretty self-absorbed thing to do, especially in public.

I've taken the knife from my MIL many times over the years and started cutting it myself just so I don't have to watch it (or eat it). I wait til I'm done and use a napkin or wash my hands. I also do the same thing anytime I get something on my fingers. I want to tell people "hey, it's not just about you". :confused3

For yogurt, I either lick the lid, or use a spoon to scrape it off, never my fingers, yuck.
Bolding mine. Had a co-worker that always did that. At work parties we always had 3-4 different desserts she always wanted to cut one of the cakes and put the slices on the plates ahead of time! I always took notice to which cake she was cutting and steered clear of that one!

Oh I have definitely seen people going to town on their fingers. :rolleyes2
Had a co-worker that would do that after his fingers was in his nose! :crazy2:

Just because you (the general you) think it's okay to lick/suck your fingers in public, doesn't mean it is okay. I bet many of you who think it's okay, would find many of the above items rude or tacky.

Instead of taking such offense, how about just realize that sometimes your behavior in public is offensive. I know people hate to be criticized but the behavior is kind of off.

I agree with everything on the list. I don't understand why people would intentionally do something in a restaurant that many people find disgusting. Nobody I know licks their fingers while dining in public. Maybe that's why it seems so odd to me that people find it acceptable. If my kids ever did it in public, I would tell them to stop. If I am eating something messy, I use a napkin. I can see doing it in your own home, but it seems like when people dine with others, they would try not to do anything gross. I get not knowing that people find it disgusting. But once you know, it seems like you would make an effort to eat in a decent manner.

Not going to argue the point. More likely in nursing homes, cruise ships, hospitals. It's not at the top of my worry list. If you want to be really technical about it - it is also more likely a problem for the people "in" the swimming pool accidentally swallowing the water.

Perhaps I am just a bit stabby today, as I am in bed and sick. But I was asking about elbows just because I truly am fascinated by the many people that no longer practice/teach their children basic table manners anymore.

No elbows on the table isn't a basic table manner any more. Customs tend to change over time.

Just curious, but, why would you have to avoid using the ball he used. Didn't you have your own? Surely, you don't use one of those "free" bowling balls supplied by the bowling alley do you? Do you have any idea where the fingers that have been stuck in the ball holes have been?

That's the funny thing about humans. We let other people make the rules up. Just because someone writes a book on proper behavior, who held an election and made them sheriff? Why do they have the right to tell us what we should and should not do. Who gave them that authority anyway?

As for myself I figure that whatever I decide to do, be it lick my fingers or put my elbows on the table, it will not harm anyone else. The idea that all of us have to watch others and judge what they are doing is morally or socially correct is mind boggling to me. The idea that someone blowing their nose is something that makes other people ill, is also something that I don't understand either. Are you saying that you don't ever have to blow you nose or that you can contain a sneeze. Or that it's better to sit there sniffing back all that stuff because it isn't proper to blow your nose or having it run out your nose, is a better then just doing what every other human on the planet has to do on occasion to clear out their air passages and take in oxygen?

Humans are such funny creatures.

I would never blow my nose while sitting at a table eating with others. It's hard for me to understand how anyone can think it's ok to do this. It's gross.

You can do whatever you want, but some people use what they believe are good manners when dealing with other people. Holding a door open. Putting a napkin on the lap while dining in a nice restaurant. Not blowing your snot into a napkin while dining with others. These are basic things. A person can get up and go to the restroom if they need to blow their nose. Wiping your nose with a napkin is much different than intentionally blowing your snot into it.

My mother has a sinus issue, anytime she eats hot food her nose runs. She blows her nose 8 - 10 times during a meal. Some of the people here think it's "gross" if someone blows their nose at the table in a restaurant. If she went to the restroom every time she needed to blow her nose she'd never finish her meal! Thankfully her family and friends understand and don't judge her. Plus she is a quiet and discrete nose blower. :)

It is very common for your nose to run (sometimes like a faucet) when you eat hot/spicy food. It happens to me. I still don't blow my nose at the table in a restaurant. Period.

I'll eat at a buffet, but I use hand sanitizer after I get the food and before I eat.

I don't lick my fingers anywhere. I especially wouldn't do it in public. Unless that lady came straight from the restroom and didn't touch any door handles, then her hands have all kinds of germs on them. Yuck. Not to mention it would be kind of gross to see a person do this.

We also sanitize our hands EVERY time we come back from the buffet, before we start eating.

We started using hand sanitizer after EVERY ride at WDW. This was the first trip no one got sick.

I believe that's actually illegal at a public restaurant in some places.

I was taught not to eat with my bowling hand because it could lessen the grip & impact my game :lmao:

You would seriously get up from your meal in a restaurant 8 - 10 times to go blow your nose in the restroom? This isn't an occasional thing for her, it is every single meal.
