As the OP, I'm slightly offended at what you're implying. I never asked what anyone's plate number was, and don't remember anyone saying what they were, or even some of the letters, much less the entire thing.

As far as your malware warnings, nothing in this thread is any different than any other threads on here. I don't get warnings, but I also have adblockers running. You may have something going on with your PC.
Sorry you are offended I said that you hadn't asked for that info. I also said that it was a natural instinct to include it. I just don't think that it is wrong to make people aware even if you weren't doing that because once it is published others might find a way to use the info. As for accusing you, I realize that I worded it so it sounded like that, but to be fair, I don't know you from Adam and everyone should be aware, including you, that asking people to tell personal stories it might lead to that kind of information on a public forum should be wary. Not necessarily of you, but of others that may see it. So I guess that probably offends everyone on the boards and for that I say, that to bad that you and/or they offended because I wasn't pointing out anyone in particular. Most of the time I don't even look at who the author of any post is.

The whole thing is concerning to me because just since I started to write this post Malware has flashed on my screen, three different times, telling me they blocked something. It might even be one of the advertisers. That doesn't happen to me anyplace else.

I'm sure you have the best of intentions, but you keep mentioning things that haven't happened in this thread...
1) " someone is fishing for information". You even admit I didn't ask for license plate #s, so how did "fishing for information" even come up?
2) "Fortunately the actual number wasn't asked for but some have posted it." One person posted a plate # from 1965-1968. I would think a nearly 60 plate number isn't going to give anyone information about anything.
3) "asking people to tell personal stories". Again, never happened. The question has always been "do you know your plate number without looking for it?" There are personal stories in probably 75% of the threads. Do you "warn" people not to do so in those?

Your malware concerns are valid, the warnings should be telling you what was blocked. I suggest getting an ad blocker. If your "alerts" are jumps to other webpages, that's an intermittent known glitch and has nothing to do with this thread (but does have something to do with the website). If it's your own Malware software, I suggest running a full scan, and try access the Dis from Incognito mode (whatever it's called on your browser). It could be an extension tacked onto your browser.

I don't think I've ever known one of my plate numbers! This is one of those adulting things that I probably should get on ;)

I've never understood why hotels need license plate numbers. I've ran into I think two hotels in the last two years asking for it, and yes, I had to go back out to get it (rental cars). Yes, I know they want to be able to easily police vehicles in the lot, but give out parking passes and tell guests to put them on the dash in the front window.
It's two fold. To ensure that the vehicle is paid for in those locations that charge. And to be able to link the vehicle to a reservation if anything happens to the vehicle. If somebody backs into your car in the parking lot would you rather the hotel let you know immediately or have no idea until you go to leave the next morning?

Are you the only possible fisherman in the world? How do you know that nothing has happened or might have if some degree of warning wasn't issued. Apparently you are not going to accept that I was not directly referring to you. Could have been worded better but, my warning still stands... even though the OP was not the one fishing there are a lot of wonderfully immoral souls in the world that could take that tiny insignificant bit of information and run with it. So, I can see that you will continue to think that you did something intentionally or even at all. What I am trying to say is for people to make sure they don't post information that might be directly lead to other information that might harm them.

With that I will end this conversation risking that you still think I was talking about you or that what I said about access to more information is incorrect. Not that you intentionally asked a question which would have prompted harm to them. Again, not you. But if you feel better being "offended" even slightly there seems to be nothing that I can say that will change your mind. So let's move on.

I don't know my current one nor the previous one. I do for some reason remember the car I had 11 years ago.
:o Glad you mentioned this. One of the reasons I don't quite always get my current one right is because I mix it up with an older one, which I somehow can't manage to forget.

I travel frequently for work. Last Sunday, I get to the airport to catch my flight, pull up to the gate to enter parking, roll down my window to hit the button, and they've taken the button out. The gate goes up so I go to park. There was a screen where the button used to be, but it said "press the button". :confused3

The airport information desk isn't staffed at that point, so I catch my flight thinking I'll call the airport to see what's going on (are they offering free parking for a promotion or something). I forget of course, and when I return last night, I figure I'll just pull up to the exit booth and explain there was no ticket.

There's three booths. Usually one is manned, one unmanned, and the third is either or closed. This time there's two manned booths. I explain there was no ticket and they said they're changing and it's going to scan license plates. You pull up to the exit booth, enter your license plate on a screen, it finds you and tells you how much is owed.

I don't know my plate #. Fortunately the worker was there and was kind enough to pull the number for me and enter it.

I'm having a hard time seeing this can be "progress" though. A few people might know their plates, but I see this causing slow downs as people have to get out of their car to get their numbers to enter it. If it can scan at the entry, why not set it up to scan at the exit?

Surely they're still going to keep at least one manned booth, even after the bugs are worked out, so I don't think this will save a lot in employee costs.

Seems like using technology for technology's sake.

Oh, I took a picture of my plate this morning and taped it to my visor so I don't have to remember it. 🤣
Of course……04RDSX

I know the tag # of the vehicle I drive regularly but could not even name one letter or number for the other three cars.

But I agree with you, Sam. If they use LPR technology to read your plate going in, why not use the same technology going out?

I'm in MA and I've had the same plate since I got my first car almost 20 years ago. I've always known my plate. I also know my mom's plate and my dad's plate. Only one I don't know is my brother's, but his plate is the same as my great-grandfather's so I could memorize it easily as we have a little rhyme to remember it by.

I am basically on travel every day for work and have to provide it every where I go, so I have it memorized.

Not a clue what it is....but I do know our FEDEX & UPS account numbers we've had since the late 80's!!!!

I know mine and my wife's plate number. Had both for at least 15 years.

So, that's an interesting machine.
When I park in a public parking structure owned by the city, their machine scans my license plate, enters it into their system, and a ticket is spit out of the machine with my license plate and time of entry.
Then when I go leave, their machine reads my license plate and then determines what (if any), I owe for parking, which must be paid by a credit card.
I usually get out of the structure within 60 minutes, which is the time they provide for free.
