The Melting Pot thread got me thinking, do you ever do fondue at home?

What do you do? How do you do it?

I would assume that if you want to actually cook any meats or potatoes that you would need a plug in version of a fondue pot to actually get it to boiling point.

Yes, beef fondue. I use peanut oil and heat it on the stove before moving it to the table. A sterno keeps the oil plenty hot... usually have to block part of the flame to keep it from boiling up too hard!!

i serve French onion soup and then a salad and baked potatoes with the meat. I am not a big sauce fan bit we have made a-1 with mayo or curry with mayo...

It is easy to prepare (except slicing the onions for the soup :sad1:) and a relaxing dinner.... your food stays hot and lots of time for conversation...

We do a beer cheese fondue with french bread and apples to dip. SO good! It's a perfect rainy fall night dinner.

We did all the time as kids. We have a fondue pot now but it needs Sterno and it doesn't work as well. I wanted to buy an electric fondue pot and just never did. Now that the kids have been to Melting Pot I really should though.

I NEED that beer cheese recipe Magic Mom .:thumbsup2

We get a cheese fondue mix at Fresh Market and kick it up a few notches with various cheeses, etc. For the meat, we get a pot of oil going on the stove and move it to the Sterno warmer, it works great. It's a family favorite.

yes! we have an old school fondue pot and 2 plug-in pots.

LOVE THEM! we use to do this mexican melting cheese and add garlic, onions, spices to it and have cheese fondue. i can't find that cheese anywhere anymore. :(

the other we do the caribbean jerk melting pot recipe (easily found using the google) and usually cut up a chicken breast and a piece of steak. also do potatoes. i've also added shrimp if there's a big group of us.

now i want some fondue!!

We haven't done fondue at home since our kids were in school and we had friends who enjoyed it. They introduced us to it. We used to have it quite often going back and forth to each other's homes. The kids loved it! We always just did cheeses and chocolate though, never "main course."

Our fondue pot is still in the cabinet, I should dig it out. It's an electric one. I should go to allrecipes.com and see what fondue recipes are out there, as it would be fun to do again on a cold winter day. :)

We fondue at home for special occasions. My parents still have 2 pots they were given as wedding gifts in 1972, and my mom has added 2 more to the collection. We use sterno to heat the peanut oil that we use for meat. We do beef, chicken, shrimp and scallops. We also have a beer cheese for bread, apples, and broccoli. My favorite part is the dessert- chocolate fondue with pound cake, marshmallows, strawberries and pineapple. It is a great way to spend an evening with famly!!!

A chocolate fondue with lots of fresh fruit, bread, cheese, and lunch meats and about 5 movies has long been our New Year's Eve family tradition of choice.

Neither my wife nor I did this growing up; it is a tradition we started ourselves as something to do and be off the streets New Year's Eve. Now it is must do in the Frantasmic household.

You eat lunch meat with your chocolate fondue???:lmao:

That would be a perfect page for Eats, Shoots & Leaves.

So, if you were to do a meal at home, would you have more than one fondue pot going, or only one?

I have a small crockpot with a divider too for 2 different sauces, which would help.

But I only have one fondue pot and I have only used it ONCE for chocolate. I would love to actually use it for cooking meat and then have a dipping sauce for the meat and a dipping sauce for potatoes or bread.

I have the Rachel Ray fondue pot: http://www.amazon.com/Rachael-Ray-2...4?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1286924930&sr=8-4

Do they even sell fondue pots anymore? Awhile back I came across some recipes that sounded really, really good - but not having a fondue pot, I didn't copy them over..:confused3

YES! Go to amazon.com or bed, bath, and beyond. There are all sorts of them.

Every Christmas Eve we do a traditional cheese fondue with apples and fresh baguette. We also tend to do a chocolate fondue on New Year's Eve.

They're frequently at Goodwill and Salvation Army. :)

You all have me wanting a good cheese fondue now!

We do fondue at home probably once a month. Usually we just do cheese or steak and chocolate for dessert. We have 2 pots going but if you have a small family 1 would probably be enough. It's easier with 2 fondue pots esp if you want to do 2 kinds at the same time.

The last time I was at Trader Joe's I saw they had a shredded blend of Emmenthaler and Gruyere. The sign below it said "perfect for fondue". Sold! I don't have a fondue pot, so I just melted it over the stove, double boiler style. I added some garlic and pepper. I can't remember if I added any liquid. I know at the MP, they add some liqueur.

Probably Kirsch.
