Do you fly SWA?

The assigned seating that SWA is trying is "You get what they give you!!"

There are no options for window or aisle and they will not change your seats at the gate!!

Not a very good idea in my opinion!!

I got the e-mail and voiced my opinion on the matter this morning!!

How do you know this? We are aware that they are trying this out certain places out west but, I fly to Arizona all the time and never have experienced assigned seating. hhhmmmm...
I voted against assigned seating also.
BTW, my DH would want me to say 'GO HOKIES' he graduated VT-Architectural Program....
I am a NCState fan... makes for a great football season at our house!!! :cheer2:

SWA was testing it out in San Diego...where the assigned seating was assigned by them. It was definitely "you get what we give you" and they didn't allow people to change the seats. Those flights didn't exactly have many happy campers.

I wonder if that's the intent. Have no wiggle room, make people unhappy, and then turn around and say, "See....we tried it and you didn't like it."

Just the cynic is me.

As long as they keep offering $59 flight to MCO I don't what they do :thumbsup2

Yeah! We just booked that yesterday. Now, hopefully we can book the trip home for the same price or close.

tks for the link.

There is one other reason that the assigned seating may make sense to the airlines. It could result in an extra revenue source, i.e. $5 for an aisle seat, etc. If all of the others go this way, Southwest would not be able to follow without assigned seats.

However, I cannot believe that a majority of people respond favorably to the idea of assigned seats. I would love to see what the breakdown is between their business customers, who should be considered their most valuable, as opposed to occasional leisure customers.

I fly southwest about 20-25 round trips a year, depending on what is going on. At one time I was platinum with Continental, but, theychanged their upgrade policies, etc. and started, basically, giving away the elite perks, which alienated me from them. Just an example of business acting to gain market while disregarding what they already have.

I flew SWA last month for the first time since they instituted the new boarding passes. It was horrible. I had no computer access on the return flight, so was unable to print out the boarding pass ahead of time. I wasn't too concerned, though, as I had to be at the airport four hours early. DH was flying out on a different airline. I got assigned the B group--four hours ahead of time! So, in order to make sure I got to sit by a window (a necessity for reasons I'd rather not go into here) I had to stand in that stupid line for nearly two hours. Not because I felt it was necessary, but because as soon as the flight before ours left, people started lining up! It was ridiculous!

I won't fly SWA unless it's an absolute necessity. The new boarding pass system has done it for me. It gives people with computer access an unfair advantage.

First off there are a few things I would like to suggest to you....

Computer access- You do NOT have to have a computer at your fingertips.
1. Have a friend or family member check you in 24 hrs in advance if you are NOT near a computer.

2. You do NOT have to have a printer. Just check in on-line(yourself or friend) and you can just re-print your "A" boarding pass at any kiosk or skycap at the airport.

3. As long as you have an "A" boarding pass (44 of them) you do NOT have to stand in line at all.

I ONLY fly Southwest, I travel at least 2x a month Orlando to Pittsburgh. I have not paid more than $97 total for non-stop flights(DING fares). You can change flights, times, etc and not be charged $50-$75 for every person like the legacy airlines(Delta,Continental,US AIR,etc) charge you.

As long as you check in 24 hrs in advance for your flight I guarantee you will get an "A" boarding pass, and you will NOT have to stand in line at all for pre-boarding. Just wait until most "A" people have got on the plane and then get in line.

I have never gotten to MCO or Pittsburgh airport more than 90 minutes before my flight. Also with an "A" boarding pass, you can, most of the time, avoid the "screaming" babies, young seat kicking kids, etc because they get on the plane first with "pre-boards".

Southwest's customer service, and there DING fares put the legacy carriers to shame. I really doubt Southwest will change there system in 2008.

We just flew Southwest from Orlando to Detriot and back for $39 pp each way. Can't beat that. We were in the "A" group both ways so no problem there. Even with a great price, if the 3 of us can't sit together because they are assigning the seating, we will look elsewhere.

I actually don't fly it because of the cattle call. I like to have my seat number and know where I am sitting when I book my flight. Its about time southwest considers assigning seats!

We like SW for now anyway. We're fine with no seats since we can preboard now. But once our kids are past that, I think we will want to know we will be sitting with them FOR SURE.

Commenting on the above. Last summer I was in Baltimore, I did not have my printer just my laptop, went and did my check in and when I got to the airport walked right up to the kiosk (NO ONE in line) and printed out my boarding pass, yep it was an A seat. Went through security, bought a book and sat down until the A line was almost done getting through the gate, got up walked on the plane and sat down in a nice aisle seat towards the back of the plane (thats where I like to sit). I've been checking those Ding fares just waiting for something to pop up that I want to do. I love that SW is one of the few carriers that fly to Orlando Non Stop from BUffalo.

For those who say assigned seats will keep your family together, think again. Although I don't like to, I do still fly Continental, and, when we are on Continental as a family, and the boys are clearly marked as such because of the Mstr. in front of their name, even with assigned seats, the airlines break you up, simply to appeas whoever yells the loudest. If you haven't had an assigned seat yanked from underneath you, you don't travel much.

I love the un assigned seating for southwest. The flights are on time more and it's fairly easy to get a A boarding pass. Why mess with something that is working perfectly!

I love the cattle call.

To me, it means cheaper flights, flights that are on time and faster boarding.

I love the unassigned seating. Just do the online check in, which will get you an A ticket, and you are virtually guaranteed a seat together. I do NOT like the massive delays that I experience with SWA. WTH am I supposed to do in Houston for a 6 hour layover? With 2 kids? It was miserable.

I'm a RR member and fly SW all the time and did not get the email.

I wish they would assign seats. I HATE the pre-boarding. I don't know how many times I've been waiting in the B or C line for an hour when someone walks up at the last minute with a bunch of kids and gets to walk right on. It's particularly bad on flights to Orlando, where the last time I flew down on SW more than half of the flight pre-boarded!!!

NOT TO MENTION... that smaller kids don't even have a seat... the are flying free because they are supposed to sit in their parent's laps. But because they pre-board, the kid will take a seat unless the flight's sold out. So all of us regular ole adults end up with bad seats in the back.

It irritates the stew out of me.

You bet your bippy I fly SWA.

$43 DING fares: enough said.

I would prefer that they don't go to assigned seating. The way it is now I can choose to sit away from the small children and loud family groups. I won't be popular for saying that, I know.

Oh, I see. No wonder they weren't happy. Seems like the majority of posters do not like the idea either!

Nothing wrong with saying it - it's one of the best things about the SW system. Not only do you get to pick your seat, you have control over who you sit near.
