Since this is our first time staying at a DVC resort and we are not members yet, I hope this is not a silly question.

We booked studio at OKW. Just curious if Disney ever overbooks and upgrades if rooms are available.

I am definately not expecting it and am really happy with just our studio but just wonder if this has ever happened?

There's an exception to every rule but the likelihood of an upgrade is very, very slim. Usually it would only be done if some catastrophe or unexpected maintenance -- pipe break, repairs, etc. put a unit out of commission

I agree with Pam.

I've heard of a few upgrades for cash customers - those who book via CRO. It's still rare.

Best wishes -

I've been upgraded to a 1br from a studio at BCV....and for no apparent reason.

It happens rarely, very rarely. And when it does, there's usually a reason. At BWV it happened a lot a year or so ago when people were booked into standard view and got preferred instead due to the construction. But it's not like many situations where asking for it might get it for you, it will not. Timeshares in general are not very good at giving you upgrades at your home resort. They don't want to create an expectation you can buy less and get more.

I have been reading this board faithfully for years and (with the exception of construction, such as BWV that Dean mentioned), I'd guess that I read a post about an upgrade ~ once every 3-6 months.

And that's more than my impression of the frequency. If you eliminate BWV construction, a room that was borderline between standard and preferred, units out of order and the 2 or 3 overbooked situations that have come up; I can think of maybe a half dozen at best all the times I've been here which is close to inception of DIS. Even if you included all the special situations I listed, I'd think it's no more than once every 3-6 months total for DVC units.

Just to add to what the others have already said, you will NOT get an upgrade just because a high class of room is available, as is often the case with cash resorts.

If you are paying cash for the room, there is probably a greater chance based upon reports that I've read here. But if you are renting DVC points, you appear to be a member to the reservation system and would be treated just like any other member in that regard (i.e. only upgrade under very extraordinary circumstances.)

We were upgraded from a studio to a one BR at BWV back in 99 as part of a promo/sales. There was a special code under which we had reserved but remember, they were trying to sell the resort back then....
