When in the South you say Coke and then they say what kind always. As for tea you say I want a tea and they bring you sweet ICED tea always.

There really isn't another kind of tea. If you do drink unsweet or hot tea (ewwww) [except when at The Tea Room at Grand Floridian] you always specify

You: I would like an unsweetend iced tea
Waitress: you said unsweetend iced tea right
You: yes thanks sweetie, sugar, hon, honey, you pick the last

You: Coke please
Waitress: which kind
You: coke, pepsi, sprite etc. then add the above mentioned endearment

In Ga. a coke is a dr.pepper, is a mountain dew, is a coke. Got it now.

PS now living in Florida I forget and thankfully grew up liking most kinds so now when I go out I usually get a Coke and always when it comes remember I should have specified without being prompted some habits die hard.
LOL, when I'm in the south and want tea, I know I always have to ask for HOT tea. I've ordered a cup of tea before and gotten iced tea, so now I know better.

Sorry, but I still don't understand the point of asking for a Coke when you want a Dr Pepper(or even if someone were to ask for a soda and then a Dr Pepper)
Wouldn't it be easier to simply say I'd like a Dr Pepper?
Though you all like to chat more than us Yankees, or so I've heard, so maybe that's why. ;)

I am imagining other conversations like:

Hi ready to order?
Yes, I'd like some food please
Okay what kind?
Pancakes.
I'd also like a side order
What kind?
Bacon
Anything to drink?
Yes, juice
What kind?
apple

LOL
Regardless when I am in the South, I don't get any kind of soda/pop/tonic/coke. I drink that sweet tea that it is impossible to replicate up here! LOVE it!!

Around here it is S-O-D-A!

I moved to Kansas and the first time I heard someone call it pop I laughed out loud very hard, and realized no one understood why I was laughing.

Then moved to Atlanta, and asked for a diet Pepsi. The waitress laughed at me! "Oh sweetie", she said "we only serve Coke around here".

But if you want a Pepsi or a Sprite why not just say that from the beginning? :confused3

Just a regional thing. We grew up with doing this and now I do it everywhere. I don't get upset if someone brings me a Coke though when I really wanted a Sprite. I am smart enough to know that if you ain't Southern then you forget to ask which kind. As for tonic I always think of Tonic Water or Hair Tonic. I found that post funny.

I drink coke. All carbonated drinks are cokes here and I also drink the brand.

I've cut back on cokes though in favor of tea. I NEVER drink Pepsi.

"coke" obviously :teeth:

Mrs. AA will ask if they have Dr. Pepper from the beginning, but at someone's house they are going to offer you a "coke" and then list all their soft drinks.

Yes, I use "soft drink" as the generic inclusive term for all of them. :)

I recall growing up hearing "cold drink" as the term though.

"Bring me a cold drank; I'd like one of them Co-Colas"
