I was going to say the same thing but you beat me too it! :rotfl: In the South it's ALWAYS Coke!

As was I! "Would you like a Coke? We have Coke, Dr Pepper, and Sprite." :rotfl:

Born and raised in the south and I've always called it pop

In NC & VA before it has always been soda. :) Since Pepsie was invented where we live, you don't call everything coke around here...but that is my soda of choice. :)

From New England we drink Tonic.
It's the way Soft Drinks were marketed when they first came out as a health elixers so they were Tonics.

Augustin Thompson created Moxie in Lowell in 1876, about ten years before Coke. He was a medical doctor who brewed up a mixture of Gentian root extract, cinchona, sassafras, caramel and other flavorings to make "Moxie Nerve Food". It was billed as a medicine which can "recover brain and nervous exhaustion; loss of manhood, imbecility and helplessness. It has recovered paralysis, softening of the brain, locomotor ataxia and insanity". Moxie Nerve Food, like all early soft drinks in America, was first created as a medicine, not a recreational drink.

After the US Civil War, pharmacists began to add medicinal roots and herbs to produce a more curative drink. Sugar was often added to counter the bitterness of these concoctions and to make a better-tasting drink. These medicinal tonics developed into today's soft drinks and New Englanders still call them tonic and get them at the corner spa. Moxie Nerve Food, named by Dr. Thompson after the American Indian Moxie Falls in Maine, became New England's tonic. :teacher:

:thumbsup2
I just went to the Moxie Festival today!

But here's our story about Moxie
Moxie was invented in 1884, making it the oldest soft drink one can still buy in America. Made only in Maine, from the waters of Lake Moxie, it has developed the catch phrase "Moxie Makes Mainers Mighty", since, like most old tonics, it was originally marketed as an elixir, mostly because it is made from gentian root. The following of Moxie surrounds the town of Lisbon Falls, Maine, where Frank Anicetti is found in charge of his store, Kennebec's Fruit Store/House of Moxie selling all the Moxie paraphenalia one could ever need, as well as the world's only commercial source of Moxie ice cream. Frank also runs the annual Moxie Days festival, held the second Saturday in July, which includes a rather long parade, a town barbeque, and more bright orange clothing than you can shake a stick at.
Note that it is damn near impossible to get a 2-liter bottle of Moxie outside of Maine without ordering it specially.

Exactly... if you are out... let's say on a movie date... and you say... will you bring me a coke? What in the world does the guy know what to bring you??? :lmao:

Soda in Connecticut. If you order pop people look at you funny, I know. I grew up in Ohio and that's what I called it until high school.

I drink tonic. When I go to Florida and ask for tonic, they bring me carbonated water. I say "If I wanted seltzer water, I would have asked for seltzer water!" I want tonic. You know, dark brown, syrupy, fizzy. Tonic! :rotfl:

do you drink a frappe or milk shake??? eat a grinder or sub??? is it sauce or gravy????

It's a frappe, a sub, and if it's red and goes on pasta it's sauce and if it's brown and goes on turkey then it's gravy. :thumbsup2 :teeth:

Pop here. Are you guys in the NE pulling my leg? Tonic?? I have never ever heard of that. The coke thing in the south is another new one on me. Of course my family in Ca. say soda, like it's a cut above pop.

I'm confused by the Coke thing.

I call soda, soda.
But if I am ordering I'll say: Can I have a Diet Coke? Or can I have a Sprite?
I never have this conversation:
Waitress: What can I get you to drink?
Me: I'd like a soda please
Waitress: What kind?
Me: Diet Coke

So when you all say that you call it Cokes do you go into a restarant and ask for a Coke and then have the waitress ask what kind of Coke and then you tell her?

BTW I like Diet Pepsi, but everyone orders Coke or Diet Coke when ordering cola...and whatever kind the restaurant serves is what you get.
Every once in a while they'll say:we have Pepsi, that okay? But usually they know that a Coke means Coek or Pepsi.

When in the South you say Coke and then they say what kind always. As for tea you say I want a tea and they bring you sweet ICED tea always.

There really isn't another kind of tea. If you do drink unsweet or hot tea (ewwww) [except when at The Tea Room at Grand Floridian] you always specify

You: I would like an unsweetend iced tea
Waitress: you said unsweetend iced tea right
You: yes thanks sweetie, sugar, hon, honey, you pick the last

You: Coke please
Waitress: which kind
You: coke, pepsi, sprite etc. then add the above mentioned endearment

In Ga. a coke is a dr.pepper, is a mountain dew, is a coke. Got it now.

PS now living in Florida I forget and thankfully grew up liking most kinds so now when I go out I usually get a Coke and always when it comes remember I should have specified without being prompted some habits die hard.

I'm from New Orleans and we call them soft drinks.

Unless it is root beer - then it is called a Barq's.

Or, unless it is creme soda - then it is called a "red drink." Trouble with that is now they don't color it red and it is clear. But, in New Orleans even a clear creme soda is called a "red drink." Seriously.

I was born and raised in Maine so I call it soda. Out here in Nebraska they call it pop, but I still call it soda. My DH's favorite soda is Moxie so my parents bring out lots of it when they come to visit. Also dinner is lunch to me and supper is my evening meal. :)

POP! I just got back from WDW and I got so confused when people talked about soda!

I actually call it soda if it's anything except Coca-cola..........that I'll call Coke, and that is what I drink!

I'm kind of confused too, & I was born, raised, & still live in the South. Then again, I'm blond. :rotfl2: I always ask for a Diet, when ordering out. That covers whatever they serve. I don't know anyone who refers to all soft drinks as Coke. Guess it depends on what part of NC & FL you are in. :confused3
