DD is starting pre-school this fall. I got the Land's End Kids catalog in the mail and they have some cute jumpers and skirts in there. I just was wondering how practical they really are for school, for playground play, etc. I am not one who minds dirt. :)

I will say that I tend to dress DD how I dress myself, comfortable and casual. For her this means jeans, leggings, cords, etc. I am not much of a skirt/dress person so I don't put them on her too often.

I have been wondering about this so I thought I would ask the Moms here. :) (And Dads too. :) )

At that age, mine wore mostly comfrotable clothes to school.

Not a mom, but I'll answer anyway ;)

More often than not, I'll dress my 6 year old daughter in jeans or shorts. But she likes to wear dresses as well, even on days when they're going to be outside a lot. Doesn't seem to be a problem if you don't mind them getting dirty.

Sorry jrydberg, I should know to include Dads too. :)

Heh heh... no problem :) BTW, the only concern I'd have with dresses is to make sure they're not so long that she'd trip over it while running.

Isabella likes to wear skirts and dresses often. I make sure she has shorts or tights under so she can hang upside down if the need arises and not show the world her panties  She can't have that! Lands' End dresses wear well and their tights fit good too. I really love Hanna Andersson's dresses and tights but BOY are they expensive. They wear like iron though, if I had more than one little girl I'd think they're a bargain........

I am not a dress or skirt person either but at that age you could not keep my daughter out of a dress or skirt. She loved them and wore them to school all of the time.

Now she is 17 and wears skirts occasionally but not usually to school.

MY 7yr old DD likes to wear dresses to school somedays, but I dare not put her in a dress on gym day! Then she has to sit out (oh the shame! :sad2: )

My preschooler DD wore dresses last year too, she was more likely to get some fingerpaint action though, so it was never anything too dressy.

BTW....I love Gymboree too. I've been taking advantage of their gymbucks to get a head start on some back-to-school shopping. I got some great clothes half off that will be perfect for September, October, even into November here! The skorts are terrific because she can be dressed up and still be pretty active, even wear them on gym days too.

DD6 wears dresses and skirts every once in a while, but is more often in shorts when it's warm and leggings and knit flares when it's cold. She HATES jeans, I can't get her to wear them. But for preschool, especially, I don't think she ever wore dresses except on picture day. Shorts or pants are more comfy for her.

My DD (starts kindergarten in the fall) likes to wear skirts/dresses sometimes.
They just all have to pass the 'cartwheel test'... so nothing too tight and I always have her put on a pair of shorts underneath. The little stretchy gymboree shorts with a slight ruffle edge look really cute with dresses - even if they peak out a little.

In my DD's school, they have gym class 3 times per week. Dresses are not good for these days. Skorts are a great option. The Gap and Lands End usually have a great selection.

As a matter of fact - my DD got ticked off at me big time because her Gap Skort was not immediately available (read - in the laundryP and she couldn't were it tonight when we had company over.

DD loves to wear dresses but it's hard to run, climb and jump with dresses on. DD also had trouble riding the scooters and trikes in a dress. Plus, she always comes home with paint, glue, markers or her snacks spilled on her clothes.

I love the Land's End all-in-one rompers or the A-line tops with bloomers. I buy a lot of my kids clothes from Lands End. I love their swimsuits for kids.

At preschool they asked you not to put them in dresses but to wear pants or shorts that they could climb around in and to not put them in new clothes since they would get paint etc on them.....I just finished my daughters school shopping for Sept and I didn't buy her any dresses, I just can't see them wearing a dress hanging from the monkey bars.

DD wears dresses quite freqently to pre-k. Right now she's in an "I LOVE dresses" phase. She has a few from Lands End and they are indestructable. With her being so young and the school playground being private I don't worry about her hanging upside down of the monkeybars and having her underpants showing. She's not the only girl in a dress either especially when it's so hot.

In the winter she doesn't wear them very much because she's not crazy about tights.

In pre-school we saved the dresses for rainy days when I was sure they wouldn't be going out to play. Now that we're approaching Middle school, never.

My daughter started preschool last Sept., and she wore whatever she wanted dresses/skirts/pants/shorts. She is obsessed with dresses/skirts/tights etc. It's not an issue most of the time because from Nov-March they can't go outside to play very pften because it's too cold.

She goes 2 mornings a week to the preschool's camp, and that is mostly all outside at their playground, so she wears shorts..or the skirts that have the shorts built in.
Also, sneakers only in the summer because the playground has wood chips and the teachers spend ages brushing off the sandal-clad children's feet. LOL

I used to love to wear dresses and jumpers. I think its fine just as long as she wears shorts under it and don't wear dressy dressy outfits.:sunny:

here I am the first day of school with my friend; we were both wearing dresses. I'm the one on the left.

I can't get my 4 year old to wear anything other than dresses/skirts and skorts. I insist that she wears leggings in the winter and stretchy shorts in the summer under the dresses.
