Do you cook?

Funny we were just talking about this last night for our upcoming October trip.In March we did a studio at SSR and DH managed to make tacos for us for dinner one night. We did a few lunches in with cold cuts. This trip we will have a 1 BDR at SSR and will use gardengrocer again. DD16 wants stuffed green peppers (go figure..her favorite food) so we will do that for one dinner and something else using rice (since we will get a bag) for the other dinner. (maybe a stir fry). Then we have 3 sit downs at Jikos, Crystal Palace and Le Cellier, and F&W for a few dinners. Lunches will be 1/2 CS and 1/2 samdwiches in the room. DH does not mind cooking!

With Garden grocer, do you arrange an exact time for them to deliver? I don't want it to be like cable where they say between 8-4. That's too much time too waste while at Disney. Did you do that b/c you didn't have car? How far away is the closest supermarket, I remember going there once, but don't remember how long it took to get there. We will have our car, so delivery or going shopping would be fine for us.

I definitely cook - I have food allergies - lots of them. for me to cook my own food is definitely safer.

mother hates it - but the price you pay when you go with someone who has food allergies.

from SSR - there are several the more expensive one (thereby to be avoided) is the closest - Goodys.

go down hotel plaza road - go through the intersection - it is on your left.

there is a Winnie Dixie a couple of miles away - at this intersection 536 - turn left - the Winnie Dixie is on your right.

same intersection (hotel plaza) - turn right - get in the left lane - go under I4 - at the next traffic light turn left - where this roads quits at ID there is a Publix.

this is also where the Premium Outlet Mall is - and across the street is the Dolly's Parton show.

Our first trip home is in October, and although we've been thinking of what a cool, new experience it would be to be cooking at Disney, is it realiztic? Does anyone actually come from spending a day in the park and cook dinner? Anything from frozen pizzas to full meals? TIA

I have been a member since 95 and have never cooked a meal. We do have breakfast but that is something like donuts. My wife makes coffee, that is it. One time I cooked pop-corn in the micro!!

Hi Tara,
We cook breakfast and some dinners. I will cook dinner the night before or get it ready. So when we get back from the parks I can put it in the oven. Last year we were right by the quite pool at the BWV and while the kids were swimming with my DH I could keep an eye on dinner. The first year we drove and I brought my George Forman grill and we would grill chicken breast, fish burgers and dogs. Meatloaf is another thing that went over well......we had meatloaf and rice one night and with the leftovers we had meatloaf sandwhiches. I bake cookies and blueberry muffins. The kids love those skillet meals and they only take like 10 min. It is a good way to cut down on cost.

Yes ...I always cook at least three or four meals (we usually do eat out at least four times). We always do breakfast in room (whether we have a full kitchen or just a studio) Very easy to make microwave egg sandwiches, etc. I usually make spaghetti sauce/meatballs at home and freeze (enough meatballs for two meals.....meatball sandwiches) and also I will precook, debone, and freeze enough chicken for something like chicken salad, chicken cacciatore or some recipe that uses precooked chicken, and I also precook some fresh ground meat and then freeze for use in tacos, sloppy joes, etc. Since we always fly I put together a box of staples to put my planned meals together (boxes of pasta, rice, taco shells, spices needed...premeasured into a Ziploc snack bag, maybe some cereal .....taken out of boxes and put into Ziplocs, coffee, sugar, etc.) and UPS it to myself at whichever resort c/o of front desk......I put name, checkin date and ressie # on box ......UPS website will give you specifics as to how long you need to allow for delivery. Then, the frozen items go in my carryon (which is a larger Thermos insulated bag) and even with a 2 hour drive to PHL and then a 2 hr 15 min flight and the drive from MCO/WDW everything is still frozen when we get there. However, with new carryon regs .......I don't know if I'll be able to take those things anymore......nothing is liquid or gel, but, frozen solids. We do make a grocery run our first day for things like milk, juice, fresh rolls, etc.
By the way, we're also at SSR in mid October......our dates are 10/14 thru 10/20......will you be there during that time? You'll love SSR........it's a beautiful resort......at first I wasn't sure, but, this will be our third stay there over the past two years and then it's back to our 1st home....VWL.....in January.

Hey Donna L, I'm in NE PA also. Where in NE PA are you?

Thank you for the directions, I'll have to print out your post and put it in my passporter(it's about to bust already, so why not 1 more piece of paper).

The Publix is a LOT cleaner and nicer than the Winn Dixie.

They make white mountain bread that is incredibly delicious.
MMMmmmmm, tell me more about this bread please. I'm a bread girl. BTW, I love the pic of you on the stairs. What are you doing, sanding? You go girl!!

I was just planning on ordering some stuff from Garden Grocer...breakfast, drinks and snacks...we plan on being out the door early in the AM to go to the parks and back at night...so it is easier to eat out.

If I were to cook, I would bring pre-made meals if possible. Sauce and meatballs and sausage, meatloaf, sweet and sour chicken (one of the quickest meals I make that DF and DS love)...this list can go on since I love to cook but don't want it consuming my time on vacation.

I see some of you are in NJ and PA...I'm in Clinton, NJ!!!

I think there are quite a few Jersey folk on these boards. I'm in South Jersey. BTW, congratulations on your upcoming wedding, how exciting!!

For those of you that do cook, if you are in a studio do you cook and what do you bring with you (i.e. crock pot, grill, hot plate, etc.)? What would be some ideas for lunches or dinners? I know a rump roast would be good then you can have sandwiches the next day! Freezer space would be quite limited though.

Oh great and then I go back home to NJ where we have no publix and have yet another reason to return WDW A.S.A.P.

Ok so I'm not crazy, it can be done. We are definitely doing breakfast in the room.
You want to hear crazy? Every December, my friend Charlotte and I put on a big dinner party during MouseFest for our RADP friends in a 1 bedroom at OKW. We plan the menu all year and have a ball entertaining our friends. Last year, we had 30 people at the party and it grows every year. Now, is that crazy or what? :rotfl2:
