I'm curious..... I really don't give a ***BLEEP*** what they think of us right now..... And I think I probably should.... but I really don't. I think our country is doing what it has to do in order to protect us and liberate the people in Iraq. Do you care what they think??

Nope. Don't care. I think that eventually we will see that it is not so much their wanting to avoid war, as it is that they have their own agenda. It could be their business ties to Iraq, France wanting to show the world that they want to be the "other" Superpower and are playing the spoiler role like the old USSR, or something else. I don't know and don't claim to know, but I think we will see when all this is over.

Don't give a bleep. Not possible to make everyone happy, shouldn't even be a concern. Must do what needs to be done to keep the people of THIS country safe. I don't feel a need to apologize or feel bad for that. If my president and secretary of state and the head of the CIA are telling me that there is probably a link to terrorism...I tend to believe them. I don't ever want to smell that smoke again, never want to rush to school for my kids again, and see the faces of the kids whose parents worked in those buildings. Don't want to wait by my neighbors side until she hears from her husband who worked for Morgan Stanley. Never again. They didn't blow up anything in France...but they did in the greatest city in the world..right here in NYC right under our noses and we had not a clue it was comming. If other countries are on board..fine...if not that's fine too, but we need to do what we must to protect our children and our way of life.

Oh well, sorry to get on a rant here...aren't you glad you asked!

If you're talking just about the war, then I'd go with your first option. But, I think that in some of their other beliefs/opinions about Americans there is a kernal of truth and we could learn from it.

Maybe the last option fits me best.

Nope, don't give a flyin' rats butt what they think. I think they're trying to put the heat on us to distract the world from deals they've made with Iraq. I agree that it's probably mutually profitable for these countries to have dealings with Iraq. Dirty deeds....

They are so far out in left field I don't care anymore.

Do they care what we think of them?

Apparently not!

In particular, France has long had a reputation in this country of being arrogant and rude. Are there daily newspaper editorials from French reporters questioning "Why do they hate us"?

So if they don't care what we think of them, why should we care what they think of us?!

My BIL is from Germany (as were my ancestors almost 300 years ago) and he's so furious with Germany's position he's been on arguing the phone with his family for the better part of a week.

This can be expected of France, but I really don't know where Germany is coming from.

As Bush said originally, you're either with us or against us.

Actually, Islamic extremists have been conducting terrorism in France for the past 10 years or so. On a smaller scale than the 9/11 attacks on NYC and Washington of course, but nevertheless terrorist attacks. Only yesterday traces of Ricin (a deadly poison, far more toxic than anthrax) were found in a luggage locker in a Paris train station. If I lived in Paris I'd be worried about were else the Ricin had got to...

I don't agree with the policy taken by France or the many other countries which opposed finally facing up to Saddam. However, I can see that many individuals in the UK and the rest of Europe believe that the USA does not care what anyone else thinks, which leads to animosity and resentment. I am sure that at least some of the current anti-war protests are based on frustration with George Bush's uni-lateral approach to the greatest problems facing the world. Maybe if the people who are currently protesting against the war thought that America did care about what they thought we wouldn't be in the mess that we're in now?

Regards

Rob

"If you're talking just about the war, then I'd go with your first option." - I am talking about the war.....

Rob- Thank you for your perspective!:D

Thanks to everyone who has taken the poll..... I wish some on the "Care" side would post their position.... like I said, I feel like I should care.... but it just isn't there.

I don't care what they think of us for the war, but I DO care what Canada thinks, and last night they booed the STar Spangled Banner in Canada at the hockey game!

I care.

They're our allies. They're our friends.

They just don't agree with us. And we don't agree with them.

Now in everyday life, if our friends don't agree with us, we don't go around saying we don't care. There is more than just the present day involved. There is a very long future ahead of us.

I don't think it's really any different globally. A very long future is ahead of us. We are a powerful country, but we are a hated country. We should cherish the friends we have and agree to disagree. But if we stop caring---we lose the friendship.

Guys, this war is a quick thing in the scheme of things. We have a loooong future ahead of us. It's not wise to build walls with the people who are our friends. We don't need anymore enemies.

This may be a simplistic way of looking at things, but it works.

Anyone who wonders where the term "ugly American" comes from need not look any further than this poll.

Anyone who wonders where the term "ugly American" comes from need not look any further than this poll.

I'm not sure this is really appropriate.

The perception of many Americans is that regardless of what we do, when we do it, where we do it, we are hammered in the international forum of public opinion.

When the Taliban were in power in Afghanistan, who provided the most food aid??

Who has provided the most aid to North Korea over the last 8 years when they were continually violating international agreements??

Who kept the Soviet Union from starving to death in the 70's & 80's through grain sales??

What country do the NY Mets play baseball in??

The answer is the same to all of these questions.

Ya' know, IMHO, one of the biggest issues that other countries have with us is that we actually DO things, or TRY to make something happen.

Foreigner's scream at us, beat us to a pulp in the press.

Then they go out & buy Levis, eat at McDonalds, listen to American music & watch American movies.

The french protest McDonalds & try to stop the construction of Euro Disney. My take is that if french culture cannot withstand the influence of a cartoon mouse or a clown peddleing hamburgers, then maybe it's not all it's cracked up to be.

Germany protests us while never acknowledging the presence of hundreds of thousands AMERICAN military on the frontier to deter the aggression of the Soviet Union. BTW, you are welcome.

We, as Americans, regardless of how imperfect we are, how inconsistent & flawed we are, at least TRY to solve problems. The rest of the world (with the noted exception of those aiding us in this cause, however imperfect it may be) sits idly on their hands and hopes that problems disappear by themselves.

They don't.

They resent us because we TRY, because we CAN, and because, when it is appropriate, we LEAD (regardless of what they think).

"Anyone who wonders where the term "ugly American" comes from need not look any further than this poll."

Doctor P can you elaborate? I don't think France cares what we think of them either- Are they "Ugly"?

I think by ugly it means reading this we sound like a bunch of yahoo's saying "hell yeah, we don't need anyone, bow to America, etc...."

I hate the fact that other counties opinions of us are based on this fact. They don't know the average American like me who doesn't fully support our government foreign policy, and who does feel all the world needs each other, and we are free to disagree.

It's a shame that the loudest voices are heard and that's what opinions are based on. It is arrogant to say we don't need another country. Flat out.

I'm not embarased by any means to be American, and I think it's disgraceful for other countries just to dislike a person because they are from America, but reading some posts on this board, it sure does seem like we are full of ourselves, arrogant, and could give a crap about what anyone else thinks.

Oh, and I'm not sorry if this is an unpopular opinion, because it's mine.

Babar- please don't appologize..... you have some VERY valid points.

I really do think that the United States is doing the right thing by liberating Iraq though- Saddam Hussein is a butcher and I don't understand why France et al are "defending" him. I wonder just what their motives are.....
