I grew up with an AC unit in my bedroom window....I LOVED IT!!!! That was some of the best sleep I've ever had in my life!!! 
I know what everyone means about the tinnitus. I have that issue too. I have to sleep with a fan on every night (and thank goodness my DH has gotten used to it as well) or else I can hear the ringing too much. It's not that hard to live with actually. I have gotten used to it for the most part....
The sound that grates on my nerves the most is when someone smacks their mouth when they eat....you know, doesn't chew with their mouth closed? I can't stand that!!!!
