How hard is it to get a king bed?

It's pretty easy, just change your reservation to a King Bed category room, as they are separately bookable options. The price is very similar to Preferred Location, and a few King Bed rooms are actually in the same buildings as the preferred rooms, so you could put in a request for that area (i.e. close to the food court) if you want.

Exactly. It just depends on what your priorities are. If you are dead set on a king bed, switch to that category and request a room close to the food court. If it's more important to you to get a preferred location, keep that one. You can ask for a king bed, but it's not likely since it's a separate category.

Back on board with POR, just cancelled my AOA res and made POR.
the difference in cost for three rooms at POR vs one room and two suites at AOA is over 4K, yes 4K.
As much as my wife wanted everyone in one room I can't justify the cost difference.
Went with preferred room (to increase my odds of being close to one another) and it's been a while since we stayed here so now I have to start researching. If anyone has helpful pointers please lmk

$4000?! That is crazy! Easy choice!

Yeah, the mermaid rooms didn't allow for a discount and was just over $3000 the suites were 20% discount and were 4772 each.
At POR I got two preferred rooms at 30% off for 2774 each and the other (extra adult) for just over 3000.
CRAZYYYY

Only downside, to my wife, is we have to split the kids between two rooms vs one suite. I actually think it's a plus lol
The other suite that has five people, the downside is less room but to save $1700 they will survive :)

How did you get 30% discount? When are you going? We are going in January and only got a 10% discount on Garden view room

We check into POR a week from tomorrow!!!! I cannot wait. The kids don't know we are going. We are going to surprise them when we wake up at 5am to go to the airport. It's our first stay at POR. Spending the weekend before at Universal then moving over to Disney to finish the week. It our 1st time taking a baby, she's 6 months old, so we will take it a little slower than we usually do for Dis. Still gonna be a great time.

I have a question for those of you who stay at POR regularly:
How long to you plan between when you arrive at the airport and when you plan on hitting the parks, assuming you are riding the Magical Express? If it helps, our flight arrives about 11:35 a.m. on Sunday (1/1) and Epcot will be our first park. I assume we will be dropping our carry-on luggage with bell service as I doubt our room will be ready that early, especially that time of year!

I would say that, assuming no flight delays or any other unforeseen delays, that entering Epcot at 2:30 would not be unreasonable. I will say though that it wouldn't surprise me if your room is ready - in 9 trips where I arrived before official check-in time, I can only recall once where my room wasn't ready, and this was back when they had smoking rooms and I was given the choice of getting a smoking room immediately or waiting for a non-smoking room, and I chose to wait.

I'm not sure why I'm even answering this, because my answer will be of no help to you at all! lol I live in California, which means it literally takes me all day to get there. By the time I arrive at the resort, it is all I can do to drop my stuff, go to the food court, and back to my room. I am always so exhausted, I never make it to the parks.

I can only speak from a single experience, but last May our flight landed at MCO around that time. We had lunch at the airport, then took DME, and we were at the resort around 2PM. So I would guess you would be able to make it with something around 30 minutes to an hour earlier than that.

As for the room being ready, I guess it depends. Ours wasn't until around 3PM, but we didn't mind (had a drink at Muddy Rivers and wandered around enjoying the warmth :) )

I never thought about eating lunch at the airport!

I never thought about eating lunch at the airport!

Since we'd been up since 3 AM and hadn't had much to eat that entire morning (no time to buy anything on our connection in Montreal, ran to make the flight, and chose not to buy anything on Air Canada Rouge to Orlando), it was a no brainer. We might be in our mid-30s, tired and hungry means very grumpy, and we wanted to start our vacation happy :) On a different schedule, I would've had something to snack on on the flight, and would've waited to have lunch at POR.

I want to go back SO much!

I might still think about it. It takes me sooooo long to get to MCO, then there's another 45-1 hour (including baggage claim, waiting for a bus, then driving to all of the resorts before mine). Then I have to get to the room and drop my stuff. It's not a bad idea.
