I agree, I wish they had simply made lighter-weight covers in the same patterns (or at least colours) as before. That would have given the best of both worlds - more regularly washable and more hygienic, but also still retaining the room's theming.
Better still, I would have preferred lightweight duvets rather than tucked in sheets/blankets.

The comforters they choose in the past were highly, highly tacky. My guess is they made this move so that they could build an association with the class and elegance you find in upper end hotels (which always have white bedding). When you are paying so much per night for a disney resort, you don't want it to feel like you're sleeping in a Motel 6:

It honestly makes me feel better spending my money to stay on-site when I know the bedding will at least be classier. But, everyone has their own preferences and I like theming to be more elegant and subtle than in-your-face or kiddish (I don't think kids care one way or another about bedding or even the hotel room unless you go themed like the pirate rooms in CBR).
