Disney's Avatar land cancelled?

Oh I know they are expanding Harry Potter, it hasn't been officially announced but some of the permit plans got leaked..I think that if they did accomodate Cameron,Iger would be really steaming mad then..LOL..I never got the appeal of Avatar either.I didn't care for the movie much

The expansion was part of the same announcement that announced the WWOHP for Universal Hollywood (which I am very excited about since I am in the LA area a lot more than FL).

Anyway if they build it or not I think will have that much of an effect on me.

Avatar at AK was a joke to begin with. I like the movie. I thought it was quite groundbreaking from a film perspective and was a game changer in bringing 3-d back, BUT it doesnt have the Disney feel to it. It would seem the job of coming up with the new land should fall into the hands of the folks at Pixar.

What on God's green Earth can Disney do to compete with that??? They have to look no further than their own backyard. Time to make Star Wars Land and Muppet Studios a reality and expand the crap out of DHS. I cannot believe that Disney has yet to strip mine the beejeezus out of those two intellectual properties. Get on the ball Disney. Let Avatarland go the way of Hyperion Wharf and make your current mega-popular properties stand out!

If this is true, I am not surprised, Cameron is not easy person to work with and Disney does not like to invest money. Star Wars had a potential to be huge and what we got after all. Do not even get me started on Narnia, what was that exactly.
Will I be upset if Avatar will not work out, yes I would. I am quiet tired of all the princesses and characters orientation even so I would like to see FLE, I am that bored.
I am not exactly a crazy fan of Avatar, even so I watched movie several times and like it, but I see potential for new technologies here and therefore I want to see it in Disney.
I think Avatar also a potential to make younger crowd to enjoy yet unless Avatar 2 and so on will be huge I do not see people all over the world comming like for Potter. This is actually a big reason why Disney may be in doubts.

Although my gut says that the land at DAK will be far less literal than WWoHP. It'll be Pandora -- and play the "fantasy" / "environmental" card -- as opposed to trying to retell the Avatar story like WWoHP does. Kind of a jumping off point for a larger message, using the upcoming Avatar films to craft what that message is.

That's what I'm thinking too.

Honestly I really disliked the movie. Not jus "meh" but active dislike. It's definitely not what I'd have picked for an AK expansion if I were queen of Disney World.

That said, as time has passed I've gotten excited. If Disney doesn't make it too literal, it has potential to be a beautiful addition. The overall visuals of the film seem very in keeping with Disney visuals. (That sparkly tree? Come on, definitely Disney-esque.)

I've had the Avatar DVD for a couple of months. Watched it last week - YAWN. Anyway, if Disney decides to do Pandora, or whatever, I'm sure it will be done well. In the meantime I'll pass on the speculation.

If WDW wants to stay relevant, it needs to change. Many folks on this board don't want to hear that, but it is true. If you are standing still, you are getting passed by. Universal Studios saw a 50% increase in attendance over the last 18 months because of one great idea - Harry Potter. WDW's great idea - more of the same fairies. Failure.

Absolutely serious. I do not see a global interest in Avatar like it was in Potter. Not yet at least. I remember carrying HP book back in college and everyone was reading and could not wait for new movie, but Avatar is different. Amazing special effects, kind of old story with a new twist, that is all.

No current franchise with one film can be compared to an 8 film franchise like Harry Potter, but Avatar is the highest grossing film in history, both domestically and internationally. Give the franchise another film or two and it could easily compete with Harry Potter.

The thing about Avatar, it doesn't hold up well. It's only been a couple of years since release and it's already a footnote in film history. This is not a movie that will stand up to generations of scrutiny. The love story was cliched, the script was crap (as most of Cameron's are - I love Titanic, but that script was the worst!), the only thing it has going for it was the CGI. And frankly, that's already outdated. I can appreciate it for what it did for computer animation (just like I can appreciate T:2 and Titanic for the same) but that does not mean this is a wise investment for Disney.

Harry Potter - you have a book series that will be going strong for decades to come and movies that fans appreciate and enjoy (and probably a reboot of the series in another 10 or 15 years).

They would've been better off creating Sci-Fi land and incorporating all Sci-Fi shows/movies that it has the rights to. As successful as Star Wars weekend is, I'm surprised they haven't made that it's own area - it's obviously stood the test of time.

Really, Avatar's only current claim to fame is that it's the highest grossing movie in the world: A title that will not stand forever and is actually not accurate. The only reason it is highest grossing is because of the price for 3D tickets (Titanic actually sold more tickets than Avatar and was #1 for longer in the box office). Adding in inflation, Gone With the Wind is the hands-down winner for #1 movie of all time - does that mean there should be a Gone With the Wind land? Now, it's my all-time favorite movie, so I would love it! But I know the appeal wouldn't be there for the masses .

Oh, I am a pretty big Potter fan, read all books, had HP games, watched every movie on the openning night and even went with my DD to first, midnight show of the last movie even so I had to work next day, I just did not sleep at all.

They did..What I meant to say was they hadn't officially announced WHERE and WHAT it will be.But all sources at this point, point to a Diagon alley/Gringotts expansion in the space formerly occupied by JAWS And amity at the Studios side of things..

No I will blame IGER...He wasn't willing to negotiate or let JK Rowling have her way( and we all saw how that went) and he is probably just as stalwart with Cameron..though Cameron can be pretty formidable.....

I don't see the success of WWoHP as being a failure for WDW. I think that most people who go to Universal area also going to go to WDW.

And I think that Disney could stay still for years and years and years, and still get new and repeat business.

Universal brings movies to life; Disney, IMO, should do it a little differently.

and you have to remember, Universal didn't bring out WWoHP the year after HP 1 came out; they waited and waited. The park wasn't announced until just before Rowling finished the FINAL book. That's a BIG difference between Avatar barely being out of the theaters and WDW announcing they are making a land out of it.
