Sports Betting

Has anyone partaken in this? This current weekend was the first time I ever tried it and it's incredibly stressful lol.

DH and I do regularly on one of the apps. We don't bet what we can't afford to lose and set limits ahead of time on either end (winnings and losings). We have fun with it and aren't expecting it to be a huge moneymaker. We aren't delusional. We are both big sports fans so we enjoy it and it makes things interesting.

ETA - We don't bet huge amounts of money by any stretch of the imagination either so I suppose that helps keep things light.

I don't do online sports betting, but I have gone in on sports book stuff in Vegas. However, I prefer the blackjack table! :p

Sports book betting can be fun (esp when it's "your" team) and can feel stressful when it is a close with point spread.

It was more fun when putting in bets with your bookie.

Now its a cold transaction not unlike buying a couple more DIS stocks. Zero personal interaction.

The only sports betting we still do is football pools. Personal and illegal just like betting should be lol. (That is a joke!)

Thankfully, I gambling doesn't "do it" for me. I am not sure why--in most other respects, I'm a bigger fan of dopamine hits than is healthy. I just can't get over the fact that in games of chance, I am guaranteed to lose in the long run, and in games of "skill" (like sports betting) it is almost certainly the case that the person on the other end of the wager knows more about it than me, and so has an advantage.

This last bit is also why I don't buy individual stocks, time the market, etc. etc. I don't even buy sectors. I'm basically an Index Card guy.

Never used it and have no interest. For any of those online gambling places, I would be concerned if they are legit or just some sort of scam. Ones located in off-shore locations are usually loosely regulated and more likely to be some sort of dubious operation. IF you choose to do online sports betting, I would ONLY use reputable/well-known sites.

Casinos I have been to locally seem to be adding a lot of those sports book sections with chairs/large TV screens/kiosks. Never seems that busy to me, but apparently they make enough money to take away from floor space that used to be used for slot machines.

DH was yelling a lot more during this weekend's games than I had noticed in the past. He normally doesn't care who wins in most games, just wants "to see a good game." This weekend he was much more invested in the outcome, tracking scores and trash talking at the screen. Turns out he started using one of those apps, too, and had bet a small amount of money on some games. So...I definitely sensed the stress lol.

Most people I know are just casual betters on these things, and do it for fun or to be part of some social event - like an office pool. I have been thinking of jumping in myself.

Not really into it. I don't have anything against it per se but I am concerned with how many of my students are into it.
YES! VERY concerned with how many students are into it. Once gambling was available online it has hit a whole new markert and it's really sad to know that so many ppl. who either pushed it or allowed it have shown a total disregard for how much damage they're doing to young impressionable people. It's one thing to gamble when you have to go out and go into an establishment meant for gambling; it's quite another when it's literally at your finger tips any second of any day. I have seen so many young ppl. (especially young college students) who have found themselves drowning it debt and who are blatantly show all the signs/behavior of gambling addicts, yet getting them to see it's a problem is a completely different story. These are kids that by in large would have never gone out to casinos or gotten involved in gambling if they had to do anything other than scroll on their phone. It's so disheartening.

It is. College students already get high and drink, why do we need to give them ANOTHER vice, especially one that most of them cannot afford. I try and talk to them about the dangers of gambling, but I'm just the fuddy duddy with the elbow patches, what do I know?

Not interested in any form of gambling - not casinos, lottery tickets, sports betting, etc. I do invest in stocks for the long-term, some people consider that gambling but we have done very well over the course of 35-40 years!

Most of our money is in index type funds but I have my separate account to play with a few individual stocks. A couple of stocks I bought in the early 90's have split so many times I now own a lot of shares at almost zero cost basis. I have been donating them to charity for the tax benefits.

I went to college in the late-80s/early-90s. I knew plenty of guys with an illegal book in their phone list. Granted, this was Bezerkeley, but I bet this was pretty common.

I play(ed) FanDuel with the <$1 bets for NFL rosters. I put in $10 for the year and am down below .50. That's enough for me. Many of the bets are .05/.10/.25 which is enough to garner some interest.

Florida just recently opened up sports betting via Hard Rock app. I'm not really interested.

I have no interest in sports betting, either online or at a casino.

I play the slots or craps at casinos.

I started last year when it became legal in Ohio and most of the apps were giving a lot of bonuses for opening accounts. For the most part, I played the “free” money, then transferred out the majority of winnings. I have a small amount in a couple apps left, but I don’t bet too much anymore.

I probably made $1,500 overall on those initial bonuses.

I don't do any gambling that doesn't go to charity, but I am sick of the constant ads. I really hope someone steps in to restrict them like they do with cigarettes and alcohol.

The mob loved when we restricted gambling, drugs, and alcohol. Turned out to be a goldmine for them.

You say loved, as in past tense. Advertising for tobacco and alcohol are still restricted today. It's why you never see cigarette ads on TV or beer commercials on Disney Channel.

I don't want to ban it completely, but I don't think they should be allowed to advertise on kid-friendly programming, which sports broadcasts are.

Fair enough. I just believe we should have less government regulations not more. I just think with the upcoming collapse of Cable TV and regional sports channels that sports teams are going to have to make that revenue up somehow. Sports gambling is a huge untapped revenue stream that they can't ignore.
