Disneyland workers say they live in cars and motels due to low pay

This has to be the strangest thread I've ever read on any forum. I made 5.00 an hour my first job working fast-food. I never considered it a career choice. I don't eat out at fast food anymore because the cost is insane. Maybe wages aren't the problem...I think you should all dig a little deeper.

As far as getting paid for every hour you work...there's' this thing called salaried vs hourly positions. Those positions come with advantages and disadvantages. I've done both salaried and hourly. Salaried roles are usually higher level positions with more benefits, but there is a lot to be said for clocking out and being done.

Certainly not that way now as state labor departments caught on, which is why Internships have disappeared in my former industry.
Please don't speak for an entire industry. Internships were still around when I left in 2022. They went away during Covid but were starting their comeback in 2021/2022. We were very limited in what we could have interns do, but the programs were still around.

It is widespread enough that one of the seminars at NABJ was on the demise of internship programs.

Oh, it's definitely changed. Doesn't mean they've "disappeared from the industry". In fact, Gray Media (owns 180 stations) has a lot of internship openings...
(just a snip when you search for "internship")...

Nexstar Media (owns 200 stations) lists 47 internship openings on their page.
Sinclair Media (owns 185 stations) lists 59 openings

Thanks Dan, you made my point. These are PAID internships, jobs, not academic internships for College (or in some cases, High School) credit. The traditional internship is long gone.

Who's Dan?

Some Nexstar opportunities:

Different job at Sinclair...

Bottom line, while some stations pay for internships, not all do.

Sorry Sam. Yeah my last employer created what they called a "Producer in Residence" program after they eliminated internships. But applicants had to already have their Bachelors degree. The good, it allowed people with no job experience to work in a major market station, the bad, they functioned just like all other Producers, just at below going rate pay. That program went away because potential applicants discovered due to a shortage of Producers, they could hire in at full Producer pay with no experience because stations needed to fill positions.

My wife is a Nurse in Los Angeles. Severe nursing shortage so her skilled positions pay over $100 an hour. Still no takers because of the high cost of living.
So with the economy turmoil in Romania they offered jobs to nurses from there. Good people with good educations, those girls dovetailed right in and up to speed fast.

5 year contract and they got a cost of living bonus + USA citizenship..

The very first thing those girls did when they started in Los Angeles was think ahead and buy homes in cheaper parts of the USA, areas that also had no state income tax. When their 5 year contract was up they moved to the homes they bought when they got here and took local jobs.

The only draw back is their blunt honesty. They told me I'm an ugly old man with a beautiful wife and should appreciate that, but they added I was a terrific husband to my wife in spite.
