Disneyland VS Disneyworld....

We took our two girls (5 and 10) to WDW last year (7 days in CSR, QSDP, no park hop or water parks: total was about $2400). My question is: could we do DL in one of the off-site partner hotels in 3 or 4 days? We loved MK, Epcot, and DHS; AK was just OK, in our opinion. Does DL offer attractions that would compare to MK, Epcot, and DHS? We would like to spend less than last year, so any estimates on a 3 or 4 day stay at DL would be appreciated. After WDW, will DL be "disappointing" to us?

Yes, GO! You will not be disapointed, it is different but some great things there... the yellow submarine ride, matterhorn, tea cups are different, alice in wonderland ride, Frog and Toads wild ride is still there, Small World is WAY more impressive exterior, some other rides are specific to only there and some are similar to WDW rides..... Yes... it is different, but worth it--- just remember that the castle is not the big thing here, it is TINY in comparison, pretty and pink and small... I think that you can do DL in 2 days, one day is a bit too short imo. DCA is not as packed and you could easily do it in a day. We did 2.5 DL and .5 DCA. We could have spent more at DCA but ds is only 3 and with just the 3 of us it is hard to always have one ride one wait etc for the bigger rides, we also had built in time for swimming, naps, etc. We stayed off property and walked back and forth a few times a day. If you buy a ticket for more than 1 day at a time it is automaticlly a hopper ticket so you can do both in a day. They are just across the plaza from one another... Even on our day that we did not do DCA we still hit Soarin' and Tower of Terror using FP and the rest of the day was DL. The day we did both we spent the am in DL, gathered FP before leaving for naps. DH took DS back to the hotel and I went into DCA and grabbed us FP there to use after naps. We spent the afternoon/evening there to see the parade etc. When they closed (an hour or two before DL) we crossed back to DL and saw the fire works. They had tinkerbell AND DUMBO fly that night, so cool!

In terms of more DL questions there is a part of these boards dedicated to DL and CA in general. As I said, we stayed off property. If you wanted to stay in a Disney hotel you will spend $$$$ if you dont mind stayed in a "good-neighbor" hotel (literally across the street from the gates, some are actually closer than the Disney hotels) it can be really reasonable depending on the dates. We have an Entertainment book (happenings book) and if you have that card you can use it at some of the hotels for even deeper discounts. We stayed at the HoJo (Howard Johnson) they had rooms with the card for 49-69 the 3 nights we stayed. We had a 2 queen pillowtop (very nice) beds, mini fridge, balcony, etc for that price. There were 2 pools, one had water slides, one of those climbing structures, etc. They also have themed suits there but we didnt need that much space. The walk was about 5 to the gate that said DISNEYLAND, another 5 to the specific park gates past the busses etc. The food in DL seemed $ but CA in general is higher priced. We ate a bit there, but we had breakfast at the hotel room (picked up fruit, yogurt, cereal, milk and kept in the fridge) we had lunch at one of the Fast Food joints on our walk back to the hotel in the afternoon (McD's, Quiznos, and then a family dinner one day) We swam and took a nap/relaxed for 2-3 hours per afternoon. We ate our dinners in the park. Our tickets were reasonable, close to the WDW ticket... although that is steep it seems to be across the board for most things (ski lift tickets, major amusment parks, etc) so that was the only real budget buster. Airfare into LA is not bad, you can get a bus to some of the hotels (not free) or rent a car, etc. We did not fly in but DH flew home and said the drive to the airport to return the car and check in was not bad. If you have more questions PM me.

We are on the west coast but go to WDW mainly because we go to Florida anyway to visit family. I used to live in S.D. pre Calif. Adventure but went to DL a fair bit in my 20's.
I prefer WDW, for the total immersion, and the theming. It's an awsome expreience. And yes, DL does incorporate some rides from the WDW parks, but just not the same experience. I love AK, DHS, and Epcot, and of course MK.
One day I would like to go back to DL for a short trip.

I just feel the need to point out, that if you DO choose to stay at one of the DLR hotels, and Grand Californian in particular, you get a MUCH MORE immersive "resort" feel, similar to WDW.

We are local AP holders, and we go about once a week on average (live only 10 miles away!).

Once per year, we stay 3 nights in the GCH Concierge Level for a "mini vacation." It's awesome and well worth it! That hotel is wonderful. Last August, we literally spent 90% of our time over 3 days just hanging out AT the hotel, doing the pool, which is awesome, and relaxing. There's a Mandara Spa there, an excellent workout room, arcade, and kid's care center. GREAT restaurants too. It's really an experience. Yes, it costs $$$, but we always get an AP discount, and that's how we do it. When we are there, it is VERY VERY easy to forget the outside world, although I feel this is the ONLY hotel where this can be accomplished, as the DLH and PPH both are high rise style and have "city" views.

And yeah, the food choices are about $1 more expensive each on average, but I feel the quality is FAR better than WDW's...

Thanks to all of you for your input and advice. It sounds like we could take a shorter trip to California and still have a great time. I also remember from spending some time in Southern California, a few years back, the many other attractions. The main thing for me was to see what everyone thought about the parks and how they might compare, and it sounds like our girls would have as much fun there as they would in Florida.

Went to DL in June 2009 (after 18 previous trips to WDW). Overall WDW is our favorite resort but DL does have a few high points that WDW doesn't have. We stayed at the Grand Californian and absolutely loved the proximity to both parks. We also loved the ability to park hop frequently. Can't beat the Matterhorn. We also liked Pirates and Small World better in DL. However. I agree that the prices are much higher overall. We are used to Disney food prices and still we were shocked at Disneyland food prices. We were also very disappointed in Chef Goofy's compared to Chef Mickey's - no comparison at all. Chef Mickey's is so much better and cheaper.

By all means go. Enjoy the differences. We felt it still was worth the price for a fun family experience.

Oh yes, there is tons to do in southern California and the beaches are wonderful. Just be prepared for horrible traffic!

CATKRAMER – I wouldn’t say I thought it was overpriced just that it doesn’t offer the discounts and the amenities you can find at WDW. We visited DL last May and although for about a year a watched and waited I never did find a good deal. We did save on staying at a good neighbor hotel (Howard Johnson’s) and using tips from the boards and other sites bought an entertainment book to get the rate. WDW is still our favorite but we got to at least visit DL where it all started. From what I read doing research DL gets more local traffic where WDW is more from out of state/country.

MR G3 – Yes I’d say out could visit the 2 parks in 3-4 days. DL is a completely different feel than when at WDW. You can walk easily from a good neighbor hotel to both parks. Using tips from the boards we bought an Entertainment Book and got a good rate at Howard Johnson’s with a room facing DL. Yes DL has many attractions. Some are the same and others are unique to DL. Everything is a lot closer so it’s less walking which was a plus. It is different than what you are used to at WDW. Less theme’ing waiting in line for attractions and less fastpass machines for attractions. Keep in mind at times they do not offer shows and fireworks every day. In the 5-6 days we were there last May they had fireworks once that week and the Aladin Show only played 2 or 3 days. As for less expensive we didn’t find it to be so. We did stay offsite where as we always stay onsite at WDW. I wouldn’t think DL would be disappointing as long as you go in prepared that although it is Disney it is different than at WDW. It is nice to visit DL at least once.

I keep trying to get DH to go there ,but the airfare is a rel killer for us. Maybe someday! :wizard:

If you're looking for a true resort experience, Disneyland isn't for you.

But if you're looking for the very BEST "Magic Kingdom" style park? Disneyland simply can't be missed.

Disneyland's hotels are neat - but I find no need whatsoever to stay in one of them for an entire trip. We stayed at the Howard Johnson for a few nights for a PHENOMENAL rate, and we could walk to the main gates. As kaytieeldr mentioned, that's just not something you can enjoy at Walt Disney World. We also were able to enjoy the fireworks from our balcony. Our view in the morning was the Matterhorn.

I loves me some Disneyland! :)

I agree with this except, though we liked the Hojo's very much, we prefer the Grand Californian when we can afford it because it makes us feel like more immersed in DLR.

My DH prefers DLR - we've gone 2 years in a row now - WDW has never been able to convert him but DLR did. Airfare is so much cheaper for us to go to CA, DLR is also cheaper because 4 days is plenty and there is so many things for us to do (we like San Diego) ... despite having a pin I am having trouble convincing him to go to WDW this year!
