A user did this a couple weeks ago before my recent trip and found it invaluable. I thought I'd pay it forward and give my impressions of DL and DCA from the perspective of someone who lives in north Florida and has been to WDW more times that I can count. I usually end up there 3 or 4 times a year.

1. Let's start with the big one right off the bat, the argument of whether a person who regularly goes to WDW would enjoy DL/DCA with it being a bit smaller in size and with some repeating rides. To us, it really didn't feel like we were going to WDW at all and it was awesome being able to experience new Disney parks that we didn't already have memorized. It was fun exploring the parks, using the maps to get around, riding the rides that don't currently exist in WDW, etc. The walkways did seem more congested especially in the Adventureland/Frontierland/New Orleans areas but that was expected and really didn't cause any issues. I have to admit I didn't really feel any nostalgia with it being the first park but felt the same Disney "magic" I feel whenever I go to the parks here in Florida. To me, the "magic" is just a park well run that connects with great characters, cartoon, movies, etc that I love.

2. Grad night crowds -- We had two days with the grad night crowds and I honestly couldn't tell a difference. Admittedly, we didn't stay late those two days since they were our last two days, had done most rides already and were tired for the previous days walking.

3. Grand Californian -- Very cool looking hotel. Obviously, reminds me a lot of Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge here in Florida.

4. On Site Hotels -- I have never stayed at the non-Disney hotels that are close but staying on-site was so incredibly awesome. It was jut so nice to feel like you were at Disney the whole time. Food was available in the hotel and in Downtown Disney and walking to the parks was so convenient especially DCA with the connecting entrance. We had a room with a view which was awesome but did get pretty noisy around 9:45 pm each night for WoC. That is not a big deal though as we weren't always in the room and the show is not that long. However, if you are a light sleeper and go to bed early you may want a different room location. Also, if you have Grad Nights during your stay you will hear muffled screams until 2 am in the morning. Didn't bother us too much but may bother some.

5. Park Food -- We tended to find more food options we liked at DL/DCA at the counter services than at WDW. It could be that we've gotten into a rut at WDW and haven't looked recently but I'll definitely be paying more attention next time. We went to the parks 4 days and I only had 1 burger while eating lunch and dinner there most days.

6. Pirates of the Caribbean -- This is a well known fact but it is definitely better at DL and a must see. I was surprised at how much extra there was.

7. Aladdin Show -- Once again, a well known fact, but this show is awesome. It's a 45 min show that kept my 2 yr old's attention the whole time. Easily my favorite Disney show including those on the boats.

8. Carsland -- Extremely well done as many have said. RSR is a great ride but I really preferred the lower inside track as i thought it felt more thrilling. Kids really loved Mater’s Jamboree too especially the 2 yr old who got left out on rides a lot.

9. Bugsland -- Very cute and well done. Perfect for the younger kids. All the rides were cute except for Helach's train. In my opinion, Hemlach’s train is a waste of space though even for the young ones. It takes you longer to get on it than the ride lasts.

10. Overall Parks -- Mornings were definitely less busy. I didn't notice a decrease in crowds at night. If we were able to get up and ready by the 7 am early morning admission we probably could have gotten a ton done before noon. Little kids and getting to the park at more like 8:30-9:00 still worked though and allowed us to ride all the rides we wanted in 2 days in each park. 2 days in each park was a perfect amount of time to get most rides done. We really didn't even need the 2nd day in DCA but it was still fun to go back.

11. Haunted Mansion -- The elevator in the pre-ride room was subtle but added something I liked to the experience. I also liked the hall you go into after the pre-ride show.

12. "June Gloom" -- Every morning started with overcast skies which usually cleared around lunch. It wasn’t consistent when it would clear up and was actually nice as it keep things cool. However, the pictures taken during this time don't look as nice.

13. Characters - Character lines seemed to be a lot shorter than those in WDW. We often were able to jump in a character line and be out within 5 minutes. (Not including Frozen characters of course. :) )

14. Broken Rides -- I think I read this on here before but we did experience a lot more broken rides at DL/DCA than we ever had at WDW. Didn't usually cause us too much trouble but it was noticeable.

15. Buzz Lightyear Ride -- The whole family loved the detachable guns. it made it much easier to shoot. The ride itself seemed to be very different from the WDW version as well.

16. Autopia -- I really don't like the counter-part to this ride at WDW but really enjoyed this one. The logistics of the ride are largely the same but the track just seemed to be more interested.

17. Storybook Land Canal Boats -- This ride is definitely laid back but I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. We rode it at night with our kids. The real floating boats really add to the ride experience and all the miniature structures were well done.

18. Tower of Terror -- This isn't my favorite ride at either of the parks. I noticed the differences between the two but they weren't really drastic to me. The rides seemed equally as fun to me.

Overall, I got more out of my trip to DL/DCA than I thought I would. I really enjoyed the entire experience and would recommend it for anyone including all those WDW veterans that don't think they will get anything out of the trip or wonder if they will. I went into this trip expecting to never return to DL/DCA for a very long time. After the trip, I can see myself making a return trip a lot sooner than originally planned and am already looking forward to my already planned trip to WDW in September before my annual pass expires.

Well, that's my 2 cents. Hope this helps some other WDW veterans with their trip.

15. Buzz Lightyear Ride -- The whole family loved the detachable guns. it made it much easier to shoot. The ride itself seemed to be very different from the WDW version as well.

Me too!!! Did you email yourself your ride photo? I like the fact you can do that at DLR (for free!).

I really noticed #5 at wdw. All we could find there were burgers, which get really old after a few days! I think wdw us so used to people having the dining plans, that they want people to do table service, so their counter derive food isn't the best. Dl doesn't have that option so they need to have a good variety of food.

@figment_jii -- I completely missed that. That would have been great to do as my wife was in a car w/ my son and I was in a car with my daughter. Would have been nice to have.

@Drusilla99 -- That makes perfect sense. I like the 1/2 Rotisserie Chicken at Cosmic Ray's in Tomorrowland but that's all I've found at WDW. Admittedly, I'm a little bit of a picky eater so I don't like a lot of crazy stuff. At DL, I just found you could get Roast Beef, Turkey Dinners, etc at a lot of places which to me is perfect but I realize not everyone agrees with that and has a more sophisticated pallet than my own.

I disagree that all WDW's CS have is hamburgers or that even most only have hamburgers. A lot of places do, but there are lots of non-burger options, especially in Epcot's WS. I don't eat hamburgers (or hot dogs) and I've almost always been able to find a non-hamburger option that was quite tasty at WDW's CS location. Some of my favorites are Flame Tree (AK), Sunshine Seasons and the WS countries (Epcot), BOG and Cosmic Rays (MK), Cooke's of Dublin and Earl of Sandwich (DTD), and Riverside Mill and Boardwalk Bakery (Resorts).

Great report and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Glad you enjoyed DLR. You did not mention WOC. Did you get to see it?

When I went on my "once in a lifetime" trip to WDW in 2006 and I had no idea the pull it would have on me. Now I have been there five times. DLR is easier for me to get to plus I have more personal reasons to visit CA than FL. Plus a quick 2-4 day trip to DLR is just so much easier to pull off than a trip to WDW. So I will continue visiting DLR more frequently. But WDW is something that keeps pulling me back.

I go to China every couple years on business so Shanghai Disney is now on my "to do" list in the next few years. :)

@figment_jii -- I do think I need to try a little harder to find some more options next time I'm at WDW. I suspect I just haven't been looking lately as you get caught up in doing things the same way every time you go when you go often. I will definitely look into the suggestions you made. Thanks!!

@HydroGuy -- I had the same feeling after this trip. I fully expected to possibly never return to DL/DCA just because of the difficulty getting there and the proximity of WDW to us. However, that definitely changed after this last trip and am much more open to going back sooner rather than later. As for WoC, I did see it as it was a "must do" for our trip. It was an impressive show to be sure and definitely tops Fantasmic and the Bellagio Fountains. :)

9. Bugsland -- . In my opinion, Heimlich’s train is a waste of space though even for the young ones. It takes you longer to get on it than the ride lasts.

Funny. I couldn't DISAGREE more. My family loves Heimlich's ChewChew train. In fact, it's my 2yo (soon to be 3yo) favorite ride at all of Disneyland. Ever since our November trip, it's all she can talk about. And honestly, I like it a lot too. The character himself is cute and funny and it's a pleasant story of what Heimlich likes to do best...eat. Plus all the smells of the foods as you pass by makes it fun.

As for Bug's Land, this used to be the only part of the park I liked. It was the only theming worth anything until they put in Cars Land.

And I agree on the counter service comment. At least, that goes for MK and DHS which the Disneyland resort is similar to. You can get better CS food at Epcot and AK, but not the other two. At Disneyland, the menus definitely have some good variety for quick service meals.

I wish I knew what those were. At AK I can only think of Flame Tree BBQ which we like and always do. We did Pizzafari once and that was enough.

At Epcot, I can't even think of one good CS option. The ones at the American and Mexican pavilions are pretty blah.

I just wanted to know which ones you are thinking about. :)

Sunshine Seasons in the Land is great. Japan and England have pretty decent CS options. Haven't eaten at France, but the menu looks pretty good.

Yikes!

As the PP mentioned, I've found that Les Halles (France), Sommerfest (Germany), Sunshine Seasons (the Land), and the Kringla (Norway) were all pretty good. Folks really like Tangerine Cafe (Morocco) as well, but I haven't been there is years. Katsura Grill (Japan) gets pretty good reviews as well, but it was only okay to me. I agree that Liberty Inn (America) is pretty generic, as is Electric Umbrella. I haven't eaten at la Cantina in a while.

In general I'm not a big fan of the CS at MK, but I do think that Cosmic Ray's is better than some, and Be Our Guest has some pretty good options.

EP has new Urban Farm quick service stand with organic and gluten free fresh grilled tilapia, or eggplant and spaghetti squash, or our fave, fresh spring mix with beets and goat cheese dressing, and even had yummy GF beer. I was astounded at how great we ate, even GF, at the amusement parks this year. HS PizzaPlanet made us freagAmys organic GF pizza with veggie toppings that were better than everyone's pizzas. They outdid themselves. There is definitely more than a turkey leg or burger, especially if you eat at the Land or their home grown Urban Farm stand (which means you don't have to go into the crowded Land if you just want some yummy healthy options.)

I hope DL would be half as good GFas WDW was this May! Very special mention to Brown Derby too!

You're spot-on with all of your observations! We live right here in Orlando and are annual WDW passholders, but because of DH's work, we travel to So Cal every summer. Some think we are nuts to go to DL, but we enjoy it so much! DL is easier to navigate, very manageable, not as monstrous, and we can allow our kids to leave the Grand Californian on their own and still make it to a park and meet up with them very easily. It's just a nicer, kinder, gentler park(s) than WDW, and we very much enjoy both parks, especially CA. We do laugh at how often the rides break down at DL...in fact, being escorted out from the middle of Toy Story Mania was a highlight for our son one year! We also LOVE the food options at DL and CA...the freshly made caramel popcorn is to die for! We leave in a few days for our trip and everyone is excited! :yay:

I am in no way an expert on Epcot and did not realize those places even had CS. I thought they were all TS only. I was aware of Sunshine Seasons but have not eaten there. The places in WS are what is new info to me. :)

:rotfl: Pretty much every WS pavilion has both a TS (sometimes more than one!) and a QS location. The exceptions are Canada (TS only), America (QS only), and Italy (TS only). So many new places to look into the next time you go to WDW! :goodvibes

A couple of additional CS places in Epcot are Lotus Blossom Cafe in China and the fish and chips cart in the UK. The Rose and Crown is a TS restaurant, but the pub section in front has a very limited menu that you can order along with your drinks. As figment_jii posted, pretty much every WS pavillion except Canada has some place where you can eat without a reservation.

Two places that are not exactly CS, but are walk up (no reservations accepted) are Tutto Gusto and Spice Road Table. Tutto Gusto is the wine bar adjacent to Tutto Italia. It has it's own menu plus you can order from the Tutto Italia menu. Spice Road Table in the Morocco pavilion has small plates and spirits and a good view of the lagoon.

If you can plan a trip in the fall for the Food & Wine Festival or in the spring when they've added some food & wine kiosks during the Flower & Garden Festival there are even more quick food options! :)

Actually I think they are getting more QS stands. I'm pretty sure I saw one outside of Italy last month. But it's hard to tell what is permanent and what is a stand for Flower & Garden Fest, but it seemed pretty permanent.

WS has kiosks throughout the area during the F&W and F&G festivals. There are a few permanent kiosks/stands, such as the one that does crepes by France and the Gelato stand in Italy. Can you describe where it was and what it was serving?

All I know is that my friends ate it and didn't care for it, I think they got some of the pastas. But we definitely went back day after day for the Urban Farm, which is a permanent stand, or it sure better be!

I've been to the F&W fest before with all the kiosks for small samplings and its definitely different than the F&G in terms of offerings.

I was SO impressed with their organic GF food. I have never eaten that way ever at an amusement park. Its the gold standard.

For some reason, the Italy kiosk at both the F&W and F&G Festivals doesn't seem to have much luck. I don't know why, but I've tried it at both Festivals and wasn't terribly impressed either time.

But we definitely went back day after day for the Urban Farm, which is a permanent stand, or it sure better be!
Maybe someone on the WDW Restaurant board will know if the Urban Farm EATS booth remained open after the end of F&G, if it was re-located somewhere, or if it closed. I couldn't find anything about it that wasn't tied to the F&G Festival.
