Disneyland let me down-matterhorn news

So are you saying that if they told you it would be down you would not have booked a trip at all? You would consider not going to Disneyland at all because 1 out of 80+ rides and attractions is down?

Seriously, it's not like WDW, where one ride down puts a big dent in a park's capacity. There's more to do in just the left half of Disneyland than any single WDW park.

Hydroguy its on Disneys Calender. Crazyduck I would have went back to Disneyworld. I swear the main reason I booked Disneyland was so my family could go on a real coaster. That was the only one my son who is only 38 half inches tall could go on. I know it sounds stupid but I am a stupid guy what can I tell you. I called Disney in advance for that reason to see if it was being refurbished. They said not in July. And as stupid as this sounds in all of Disneyworld which is 100 times bigger than disneyland there were 0 coasters my son could ride.
I have looked four times at the DLR calendar over the last 2 days including just now and have yet to see it myself.

just checked its there I was hoping you were right.

FYI, there have been a couple of other rumors on the Matterhorn rehab. So far they are right with a 0-2 record. Maybe it's three is a charm? We'll see in a few days.

does Disney really want me to believe that they are closing the ride for 2 months and they didnt know about closure when I called.

There is absolutely NO chance that the general CM who answers the phone would have a single clue about ride refurbs. The CMs AT the ride probably didn't know. You are expecting FAR too much from the info shared; when they have it ready to share, they share it...until then, the info isn't there.

I should have went back to Disneyworld.

Because they never shut anything down? I highly doubt that.

I fully understand your anger. I went to DLR and Space Mtn. was down. I could have sworn it was down like two years because it seemed like the next summer it was closed, too.

If it was back before '05, then yes, it was closed about that amount of time. They redid the whole thing.

I swear the main reason I booked Disneyland was so my family could go on a real coaster. That was the only one my son who is only 38 half inches tall could go on.[/QUOTE]

That's a pretty big gamble to take. My son absolutely HATED Matterhorn the first time he rode it. I mean hated it. If we'd gone to DLR solely for Matterhorn, what an awful visit that would have been!

Could have gone to Universal Orlando, ridden Flight of the Hippogriff, which is nice and out in the open (unlike scary Matterhorn), and without a Yeti (the main reason DS hated it so much).

With a little guy like that, you need to make vacation plans for you guys, and he gets to go along with you. Anything he likes is extra. To plan *around him* is far too likely to backfire on you.

You know, maybe Matterhorn will be down this summer. But I am still waiting on seeing that from Disney.

The folks around here are taking it as gospel and getting all worked up. I will believe it when I see it.

:cool2:

Although the calendar only goes out to July 12, I'm afraid the Disneyland calendar is going to prove the MousePlanet Matterhorn closure reports to be true -- right down to the on again, off again closures in June and then the closure starting on July 11. I'm thinking that as days are added, the July 11-September 1 closure dates are going to show up.

Sorry OP for your disappointment. I hope you're able to make the best of your trip anyway. We've gone when lots of things were closed (including at one very unexpected closure), and we still had a great time. I hope you do too!

Tino - go to Kennywood near Pittsburgh. Your son can ride the jackrabbit which is a GREAT coaster. My ds rode it first time when he was 3 1/2 and has been in love with coasters since. He's dying to hit 48" to ride Screamin' now. Really, though, it lacks the Disney touches, but Kennywood has old time charm and is a really great park (and they allow you to bring in full on picnics!). Plus it's heck of a lot cheaper!

Hey All, so I too just looked on the disney official calendar and didn't see anything past July 9th. However, a few days ago I was able to see July 11th with the Phase 3 Matterhorn Refurbishment scheduled to start. What, I am thinking is that Disney is still deciding on whether or not they will do it.

Somehow the rumors of the reburbishment from July 11-September 1, 2011 leaked out and is causing a lot of blacklash. I too was pretty upset, and even made a post about my disappointment. But everyone here is right, I'm not going to let it negatively affect my vacation. There is so much to do in Disneyland besides the Matterhorn! Also, we all know that it needs some TLC.

So lets look on the brightside, we get to experience new rides, resturants, parades etc. this summer. Disney can't appease everyone especially after all the construction that has been going on. My cousin went in early April and it seemed like everything was closed for refurbishment. I'm thankful only the Matterhorn "may be down" (as we know this is subject to changes!)

To those unable to see the calender up to July 11. I've noticed that the browser I use determines how much I see. Firefox will display things differently than IE differently than Safari etc.

An example of this is the MM days in June with the Grad Nights. For weeks it was showing as no MM on Wednesday June 8th or Thursday the 9th on Firefox but when I looked on IE it showed the schedule.

To the OP who is dissapointed by Matterhorn. Yes it is a unique Disneyland Ride and I am sorry it will be down for you but in all honesty it is not what Disneyland is all about. Yes it may be the only coaster your son may have been able to ride but there is still plenty of other rides he can do ad enjoy.

Also your son may hit a growth spurt and reach the 40" mark. After all he has 2 months and kids can grow pretty rapidly!

Cant believe Matterhorn is down for the summer.I will tell everyone this is a bunch of bull. I called Disney 2 weeks ago before booking my trip.I new about the refurbs in June. I asked about July. The guy laughed it off and told me nothing going on in July. So I went ahead and booked vacation coming from NYC. Told my kids about Matterhorn. Showed them video of ride. Then 2 days later Mouseplanet reports refurb for the summer. I call Disneyland everyday for the next 10 days being told by those idiots, nope those websites must be mistaken, they are wrong BLAH BLAH BLAH. So my questions are why the hell do third party sites have info before Disney. Why the hell are they closing ride down for 5 days, opening it closing it for 5 days then reopening it for 2 weeks only to close it for 2 months. Why the hell if its a saftey issue that suddenly came up like some have suggested does Disney keep ride open now and risk injury or death to someone. Lastly does Disney really want me to believe that they are closing the ride for 2 months and they didnt know about closure when I called. I dont want to hear about calander only goes 60 days ahead. They put me on hold to speak to someone. I am coming a long way to have the ride they are known for during the busiest time of the year closed. I am not a local that can go anytime. I should have went back to Disneyworld.

it isn't the end of the world - i am flying out shortly from the UK and my fave ride splash mountain is down.

just bad luck i guess.

It's down for my dates in June too. June 22-24. (Hydroguy, check those dates, it's definitely listed as being refurbed, ph. 2). But to be honest, I'm actually a little relieved because I wasn't sure I should ride it with my neck issues and it's being down takes it off the plate as an option, so less pressure for me to decide. lol

I am sorry the OP is so disappointed. I hope your family has a good time despite this.

Just curious, I am new to this what does Op mean. Also the people who are saying its not a big deal are you guys locals because I am not, Own coming all the way from New York.

It was back before '05! I just don't see picking a park because of one ride. We LOVE Indiana Jones but I am serious everytime we go, we get a fast pass and then the thing breaks. We went to DLR in '05 just for Screamin'. The day before, there was an accident and people got hurt and it was down for the whole vacation. Things happen. If you are already upset about it, then your trip is going to be miserable. Maybe you can change your plane res and go to WDW if you think that would be better!

OP = Original Poster (so, in this case, you, Tino)

And heaven's no, I'm not local. I'm driving in from Iowa. 3 days of driving to get to CA. It'll likely be our only trip to DL ever. We've only been to WDW once and while I HOPE to go one more time when my girls are teens, we may not. and when we were there PoTC was down and they weren't big enough for Rock n Roller coaster etc.

I just know that there are a lot of other things for us to do and being at Disney is something we look forward to.

We've planned this trip for 3 solid years (since the day we left WDW in 2008). I'd be sad if something like Splash or Saorin was down because we loved those in WDW, but we wouldn't let it ruin our trip, we look forward to everything else. the trip means too much to us to get too upset. Now, if they closed the park all 3 days, I'd be ticked. ;)

and i am coming all the way from the UK! a 11 hour flight. So no, i am not a local either! i am just saying something like that isn't worth spoiling your trip over

OP - original poster.

If one ride closure is going to ruin your entire vacation, by all means, stay home or go elsewhere. That is all Disneyland needs in July- another Grumpy family! :lmao:

However, unlike Disneyland, the height requirements for all of the "REAL" family coasters is 40 inches- not 44. Get your kid a good pair of cowboy boots and ride Space and Splash and all the other REAL coasters. Honestly, if you have ridden Space Mountain at WDW, you have ridden the Matterhorn. Jerky, jumpy, slow little coaster. Space at Disneyland, that is a horse of a different color!

And while I am local-ish now, I wasn't always. And we drove to California from VIRGINIA for our honeymoon- one day in the park- and spent almost five hours in line for the Rocket Rods because it kept breakig down. (insert Rocket Rods expletive here.) It is not the end of the world, unless you let it be.

Tino, it isn't the only roller coaster you can all ride as a family at Disneyland. Toon Town has the GoGo Gadget Roller Coaster. That's a fantastic roller coaster for the family to all ride together. Like other's have said...the Mattahorn is not worth putting all of your anger into. It breaks down frequently, and there's no guarantees that your son would like it anyways. Best to put that behind you and move on. Disneyland has so much to offer, one ride is not defining it.

And, you also can't expect that Disney has all the refurb schedules decided so very far in advance perfectly. There are SOOOOO many factors to consider when they plan ride closures, many of which are moving targets already. We all have to cut them a little slack on those issues...they are doing an incredible job managing such a complex park.

On the bright side, Little Mermaid and Star Tours will be open. Splash Mountain will be open. A new parade will be running. You have a lot of opportunity that I didn't have on my trip last week. Enjoy!

You guys are right. I just am nervous now that they will be closing something else also. I always assumed that refurbishments were put off during the less busier times of the year. By the way How can I add about an. Inch and a half to my sons height. Any good beaches near Disneyland and should I bother with legoland if we are already doing Disneyland its just more rides in my opinion. My kids are 6 and 3 we are staying for 7 nights. I don't want to rush through everything like I did last year in Disneyworld. Any opinions?
