Disneyland ½ Marathon Weekend~2012 Check-in!

Thanks- I am actually surprised and please with how I am healing. I am walking with no crutches and an aircast right now and hope to take the cast off tomorrow. Perhaps walking is still a possibility!

Fingers crossed for you!!!

Yeah!! I'm so nervous/excited!!! Can't wait!

Jessica, did you find out if you have to work later that day? :)

I'm the exact same! I just keep telling myself I've already done two, I can do a third. I'm mostly nervous that I'm also doing the 5K this time!

Not quite yet. My schedule for both jobs is only out through the 1st but so far everything is looking good. I have a short enough shift on Saturday that gets out early enough for me to get a decent meal and a good night's sleep. Right now that's all I care about! I wont know until Saturday if I'll be working after the race. Gosh I hope not. I requested it off though, so we'll see.

I was planning on running this race as my first half-marathon. It is the whole reason I started running back in January. Unfortunately, I tripped over my flip flop on Thursday and sprained my ankle (2nd degree). I am so disappointed that I most likely won't be able to run. My husband is still doing it and my kids are doing the kids races, though.

Oh no! Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Good luck with the run everyone! My wife and I were seriously considering, however her birthday falls that weekend and we just ran a half last weekend in Vancouver.

Running through the park sounds like so much fun though, maybe next year I can convince her that running on her birthday is good for her. ;)

Was that the SeaWheeze? I had considered doing that one but wanted Disney to be my first half. I should have done it though.....ended up running 21 K on my own anyways.

It will be here so quickly! May everyone stay healthy and safe from here on out, and that thone who are injured have a speedy recovery.

I ran the most number of miles ever today(10) and can't believe the "runner hater" in me did it. I hardly recognize that person anymore!

See you all soon!

I'm on the injured list but I WILL complete this race. My knee gave out two weeks ago and I've been resting it since. I have been continually training but no running. Well today I ran 3.5 miles for the first time since the injury with my knee wrapped in KT tape and I still felt the pain. I know I will finish I just wanted to attempt a PR but that can wait until I heal. Good luck everyone and safe travels to DLR in the next few weeks.

It looks like the 5K is sold out. Does anyone know if there is a place at the expo where I might be able to get bibs for a family of 3 to run the 5K. Thanks.

I know! I'm so excited. Knee was giving me a lil problem this am so I rode bike instead of run...wanna baby that thing if it needs it riht now!

I'm in the same boat as you guys! Looks like knee injuries are the injuries this year. I was hoping to PR this year too, but got told to shut it down 2 weeks ago, b/c of a tear in my MCL. I was getting some running and gym in until 2 weeks ago when I had to stop. I've been going crazy not doing anything, but Wednesday I can finally start up again. As long as I have my tape, a brace and some ice for after I will get that medal.

I'm so excited I can't believe we only have 1 more weekend until the race and the parks!!

Once the event is sold out, I don't believe you can get bibs or otherwise participate. Sorry. :sad1:

I'm so not ready. Lol. My new shoes hurt the arch on my right foot. I don't know if I should wear the old ones or the new ones. I guess I'll try another run in the new ones today and see.

How long have you been training in the new shoes?

I've run about 10 miles in them. Going to try a few more on the treadmill today.

I had the Brooks Ghost 3 and these are the 5.

At the beginning of every race, I repeat over and over in my head, "Go your own pace, go your own pace, go your own pace." It is way too easy to get caught up in the crowd around you! But if you start out too fast, you're going to regret it. So try to just stay at your pace and don't worry about the people around you! Easier said than done, I know, that's why I have to tell myself over and over again to keep at my pace.
I second this. As much as I'd love to go faster than my 3 hour or so pace, I'm unable to do so. There's a family history of foot problems, which flare up in me if I start to run too much. But I can maintain the necessary finishing pace for runDisney races.

In the words of Star Trek's Worf, I joked a lot last year that "today was a good day to die" during training and race day itself. I figured I'd either fail spectacularly or finish the thing. In the end, I got my medal and am hoping to complete the Coast to Coast this year. So as the time for preparation is winding down, trust your training. At least for me, the goal is to finish the race and enjoy the benefits that come from regular exercise.

I've read before that it's smarter to run in shoes that you've put the miles in and are near "the end" to run a race than to risk injury in new shoes. So if you've only done 10 miles in them and we're 2 weeks until "go" time...you might consider wearing the older pair.. especially since the newer pair are giving you issues.

You said it perfectly...."trust your training"! That's what I love about half marathons/running. The only person I'm in competition with is myself!

I made the mistake last year of running in a pair of shoes I bought at the convention the day before. I haven't worn them since. LOL

Now, that being said. The break in period for shoes is much less these days and with 2 weeks to go you might be able to break them into where they are comfortable for you. I too just got a new pair of Ghost 5's to replace my 4's and after a couple of 10 milers and one 18 miler they feel great.

Only you know what you are going to feel comfortable in but I wouldn't give up on the 5's just yet.

Very, very true. I loved that Nike ad that run during the Olympics showing the overweight kid walking that said simply "Find Greatness." I signed up for the Disneyland 1/2 in 2011 to get that medal. But I've learned along the way that it's about much more than the medal.

One of my lasting images of the race last year came from a sweet old lady sitting in a wheelchair in Downtown Disney. Obviously, there were a lot of people with signs to cheer on their family and friends. But this lady held a sign that simply read "Hello Total Stranger. I'm Proud of You Too."

I remember the lady also! I got a little teary seeing her.
My training was blown a few months ago due to work stress and me not overcoming it and getting off my butt. I'm just praying to not be swept.

I hope that lady realizes what that sign meant to so many people in that race. I didn't have cheering sections along the race for me, so I appreciated the many people who either took the time to look at my name on the race bib or the kids in Angels Stadium who cheered for BYU (where I went to college) as they saw it emblazoned across my tech shirt as I went through the stadium.

And I walked almost the entire course last year in just over 3 hours. Someone I met when I was getting my running shoes told me that if you make it to Angels Stadium without getting swept, then you're going to get the medal.

Did you feel a big difference from the 4's to the 5's?

I actually did 2 miles on the treadmill last night in them and my feet feel okay today. It's just a really odd feeling when I have them on, that the arch feels so huge.
