Disney will post Alligator warning signs and fences

And at what point does personal responsibility kick in? You can't make the world idiot proof, no matter how hard you try. I'm going to assume that the average adult at WDW knows how to read. If they consciously decide to disregard those signs, then anything untoward is on them. Maybe Disney needs to borrow Pete's favorite phrase and have those signs read STAY OUT OF THE DAMN LAKES.

No, signs won't stop someone determined to disregard them. Neither will ropes, rocks, or fences.

I'm not sure I get your point here...

It's been shown countless times on these boards that people did not know no swimming meant stay out of the damn lakes. Who cares if people decide to not heed the warning. Still doesn't mean you don't properly warn them, does it?

All I know is a gator warning sign would keep me away from the waters edge a lot more than a no swimming sign. No swimming also doesn't mean going into six inches of water to fill a water bucket for sand castles now does it.

Sorry, you quoted my post before I edited it. I'm referring to the new signs that are going up. Hopefully a Stay out of the water warning will be explicit enough even for the most uninformed guest.

New signs are great - if only people would look at them, read them and follow them. There's lots of discussion as to how Disney should enforce this and enforce that. How about some self-accountability for our own actions?

*If a sign says don't feed the birds - it means just that. It doesn't mean that i'm excused from it, it only applies to others, or if I only give them one piece then its ok.
*If the rule is no selfie sticks - it means just that. It doesn't mean I can sneak one in my bag and then play dumb if caught.

Rules and signs are there for a reason so why not follow them. Just because no one is there to see you break these rules doesn't mean you didn't break them. Why put all the responsibility of enforcement on Disney? Why can't we be responsible for our own actions?
Oh yeah - its just too damn hard.

Exactly. I can't tell you how many times I've seen Dis posts that are all "I know we're not supposed to feed the birds but it's just so much fun for my kids and so cute!"

And then these are probably the same people who complain when a bird snatches their food out of their hands while they're trying to eat.

What part of "no swimming" means stay completely out of the water due to dangerous animals?

Weird that you left that out of your example, isn't it?

I was not addressing the sign no swimming. I'm not getting into a debate as to what 'no swimming' means and what the reason behind it may be.
I was addressing the issue that some people don't follow posted signs in general. They disregard the signs until someone catches them in the act and tries to enforce it. Then they play dumb.
Maybe this is a better general example:
There are speed limit signs on most if not all highways- yet tons of people exceed those limits everyday. The limits are there for a reason so why not obey it without having cops waiting there every few miles.

Self accountability.

I don't see anyone here arguing against self-accountability. It's all about giving people more information.

Except for the fact that you are posting on the Alligator warning signs thread......

And if no one reads them, why are they there? Is it to give those who read and obey a chance to do the right thing? - This is the point.

Disney WILL put up more clear signs of the gator danger.
Disney WILL have a more robust gator removal program.
Disney WILL do these things because they will want to and they have no other choice.

This is a sensible precaution but it does not go far enough. The animals need to pulled from areas where guests frequent (like Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake) and relocated, and it must be done diligently and continuously. They cannot have dangerous animals that can kill a child in areas where children are present. Unthinkable!

They will be killed, and Disney has done this for a long time (assuming they are over 4 foot).

I'm having a hard time understanding what point you're trying to make?

I didn't mention the no swimming signs - you're correct. Don't feel it's necessary- there's been plenty of threads that covered all the angles of that. This isn't a thread to debate the meaning behind no swimming.

This is the thread on new alligator signs being posted- you're correct. Like I said previously I think that's great.

What I did address was the conversation that was happening in this thread. It's not enough to put up signs - people have to read them and follow them.

You may want to read all of the posts in this thread. There have been a few that claim Disney should be doing more to ENFORCE the signs. That if Disney would reprimand more people for doing the wrong thing that people would start to listen. It's that going against self accountability?
My point is, why can't we ourselves enforce the posted signs?

I'm all for giving people more information.

Then by all means shut the place down - that's essentially what it would take to do what you're advocating.
