Disney will post Alligator warning signs and fences

I was not addressing the sign no swimming. I'm not getting into a debate as to what 'no swimming' means and what the reason behind it may be.
I was addressing the issue that some people don't follow posted signs in general. They disregard the signs until someone catches them in the act and tries to enforce it. Then they play dumb.
Maybe this is a better general example:
There are speed limit signs on most if not all highways- yet tons of people exceed those limits everyday. The limits are there for a reason so why not obey it without having cops waiting there every few miles.

Self accountability.

A quick search will show people all over the world climbing over railings and taking pics. Hopefully most guests are smarter than that, but I'm betting a few won't be. And hopefully Disney will have a low tolerance for anyone climbing over fences or feeding the wildlife.

I'm honestly surprised by the fences. I didn't think they would do that.

Not really surprised. I was hoping they would go with more people but that just isn't Disney's MO lately. A fence is cheaper and more effective (even if it takes something away from the theming.) As a comment on effectiveness...Is it a solution that completely prevents another gator incident? Nope, but it will significantly reduce an already very low probability. If the chance of an attack is much higher than we expect due to the perfect mix of desensitized alligators, growing alligator population, small children, out of town parents, and night time shore activities, this will overcome all of those factors to keep the odds in the astronomically improbable range again. Most people are not going to jump a fence with a small child to get to water that has a posted danger sign.

I posted this in the other thread:

Had that fence been there a week ago, I feel fairly confident this would have never happened. Its not going to keep a moron from jumping over if they want to, but it will stop parents who wouldn't think you'd find an alligator in a manmade lake at a beach resort type hotel where kids are encouraged to build sandcastles and play in the sand from allowing their child to dip their toes in or walk in ankle deep water. I wouldn't even want my child fillings buckets for sandcastles from that water. None of the above IMO fall under swimming. I think if that family or any family on that beach had any idea there was a minimum of five alligators lurking in that water people would have been behaving much differently with being close to that water. In all the interviews I have yet to hear one person say...oh yeah I knew that lake had gators, but still told my kids to dip their toes in and fill buckets with water from that lagoon. Every parent who has allowed their child to splash or take water from that lagoon has said the same thing...I had no idea there were gators in that manmade lagoon.

The pics of the fence doesn't look like an eyesore...it fits in with the theme and says to guests stay back. As you stated Disney should have very strict consequences for those found climbing over any fence on property or feeding the gators.

I am glad Disney reacted to quickly to the tragedy and is now putting the fences and signs. Im not sure how necessary they are anymore because I think the entire world now knows there are alligators in the lagoon. Im hoping the fences with bring some relief to the minds of now worried parents, so they can continue with beach activities. I wonder how many people you would now find on the beach without the fences. Not me!

The fences are a good idea and honestly how could Disney not do this with the position they are in. People on here keep talking about how people will just hop the fences. Do we not think that many, many people have already heard about this poor child being killed by a gator at DW? Do we really think parents who have heard what happened are letting their children go over that fence. Give me a break. Unlike in the past there will be CM,s on the lookout for anyone going over those fences and close to the water. And how many people who know of this tragedy will be comfortable about being on the beaches at night when they can't really see what is out there. IMO the change in signage, fences and what will most certainly be a greater CM presence in the beach areas will make another attack almost impossible.

What about tom sawyers island? Is that just a haven for snakes and other things like alligators? It is a favorite of my son. We are going in August. We make sure they stay on the paths.

All the beaches will have fences? I love Shipwreck Beach, which I understand is the same waterway, but it seems larger so maybe people could stay back without having a fence there. Perhaps having CM's patrol the beach to make sure people don't get too near the water would work.

Also - has there been anything done at the water parks? Those waterways aren't connected like the Lagoon is, but has anyone seen any beefed up security there?

I hope the fences are temporary. I hope they figure out some alligator deterrent technology that they can sink into the lake and keep the alligators at bay and then reopen the beaches.

I'm very surprised Disney is implementing these changes so quickly. Doesn't that basically doom them legally, when the family decides to file suit? They are basically admitting they didn't do enough to prevent this from happening.

I wouldn't think so? There was a no swimming sign (which, to be clear, should have been more clear) and they do have a team that removes gators. I'm sure if this went to court (and, let's be honest, Disney will settle. There is no way this will get anywhere near a courtroom) I'm sure Disney would be found somewhat at fault, but not 100%. It was a wild animal. They get into places they shouldn't be. There was that wild snake that fell on a kid in Animal Kingdom not too long ago. Less severe than this, obviously, but animals do exist.
I'm not a lawyer- the only experience I have with this is when a customer injured themselves at my old job. The first thing you do is tend to the customer. The second is fix the problem. That way it doesn't happen again. No matter how minuscule the chances.

Agree. Hoping it is temporary while they design something. I mean these fences mean nothing, the signage will help get the point across.

They really need to work with designs like CSR, they have beaches and walkways etc by the water but with great landscape architectural barriers. If anyone went in that water, then they climbed over things they shouldn't and responsible for their actions.

I'm 99% certain that if the sign said beware of Alligators in water's edge, that child would still be alive.

I'm just as sure of the opposite, that if the sign had said beware of alligators everything else would have played out exactly the same, except that Disney would have less liability. A sign would not have made anyone think what happened was any more possible than no sign did.

It was a fluke, a tragedy and a result of a lot of things, but I don't think signs would have made a difference, except to Disney's lawyers.

They were doomed from the beginning. Disney will not want this in a court. They will settle it out of court.
