Disney Visa...infuriating

I have had Chase unexpectedly deny a charge when I was in New York (we live in PA). Sure it is for our protection, but it is a real pain when you are in a busy store with a long line and the only credit card you have on you is that one. I had to call my DH who was out by the car to come in with a different card.

They've denied us as well when we were out of state.

Super inconvenient in the middle of a store, but I'd rather be inconvenienced every now and again then have no notification when it's legitimate. I've gotten an email or phone call within an hour of a false charge going through and it was resolved immediately. I prefer them being overly cautious.

We can easily call the card before going out of state and avoid the inconvenience if it's that big of a deal.

Sure, but I have children living in CA, NY, and DC whom I visit regularly. We had been in NY using the card for a couple of weeks while DS was looking for an apartment and moving; this came after many other charges went through. The solution is to use my AmEx card more I guess although now I have a Chase Sapphire which is very generous with the 2X travel pts.

I guess. I western union a payment once a month and still get it declined every time until I call the card m

Like I said, I'd rather that then them be less vigilant in the off chance something happens.

I charge about 3000.00 each month and pay in full (charge everything - groceries etc.) and I only have noticed that they continue to increase my credit limit. Wonder what triggers them to lower it? Could it be affected by other credit usage? This is really the only one I use and don't have balances on any other cards.

Same here.

I have never heard of this. I would think they would increase the limit if anything.

Thank you for sharing. Just learned something new today.

Okay - not sure if I quoted and replied right - trying to navigate the new boards.

The way I understand it was (using fake numbers...)

Chase balance was near max, say $5000.

They saved $2000 for trip.

Instead of paying Disney direct with maybe their checkcard from bank, they paid $2000 to Chase. Which should have made their balance $3000 / $2000 available.

They were then going to use the $2000 available to pay their trip, thereby getting points (instead of no points if had paid from checking/bankcard).

But... chase lowered their limit to $3000 thereby having nothing available to charge the trip.

Again... just fake numbers for easy math :)

Looks like op got it sorted out though.
I considered that. But, OP says she has other cards & isn't interested in running up a card. I'm curious what the difference is in running up Card "A" vs carrying over an existing balance on Card "B".

And yes, it would change the point scenario, but shouldn't impact the $$$ spent.

credit card companies not only look to how you use your credit cards, but the potential to which you could use them. in extending credit or reviewing an existing line a card has extended to a person they absolutely look at credit score, payment history (with them/other lenders) and debt to income ratio-but they also look at how much credit is immediately available to the person through existing sources (other credit cards, existing home equity lines and such). an applicant who was originally approved based on only having around $5000 in existing available credit lines is looked at differently if a review shows no real change in income but the line increases from the other cards now available at $10000.

I noticed when we decided to strictly use 2 cards (and only because not everyone takes amex, and I want a separate exclusively for dd's college expenses cuz it's easier at tax time) so we closed the few odd ones we never used-the ones we kept offered to hugely increase their limits. the explanation I received was because we were considered "good" up to a certain TOTAL amount through all lines of revolving credit, and the remaining cards were willing to fill the gap between what they were offering and that total (told um-thanks but no thanks:laughing:)

Well crap. I am hoping to pay cash for most of our trip and pay down the balance on ours so I can link it to our magic bands for the trip. Now I am scared to do so...
You should be OK by paying a little more off each month. We to have made large payments without diffaculty. I think OP would have been better off paying down her balance over time rather than in one big chunk.

Our disney acct was closed because we didn't keep a revolving balance on it. It was like being punished for being responsible. So no Chase for us. They seem too shady.

That's strange because I've had a Disney Visa since day one and I've never carried a balance except when I've taken advantage of the 6 months interest-free financing on Disney vacation packages.

Right...I've had mine for years and have never once had a balance. I guess since they figure they make enough money on me on fees they keep upping the limit. I started out with 8K and now it's 16 I think.

-Update- I've spoke with them four times since last friday and each time I was denied a reversal I asked to speak to that persons Superiovisor, then had to wait for a call back. I THINK, that it will be reversed tomorrow. They had our income a little lower than it is I told her I would happily prove our income. This is not why it was reduced though. The lady from yesterday said between the large payment and the change in activity it red flagged us. A flag is one thing, a reduction of thousands of dollars is another. The lady from today said it was a combination of everything but said with the explanation I provided today she could reverse it as long as our income could be varified.

This experience has really been crappy. It sounds like this isn't uncommon behavior for them and I will not make this mistake with them twice. I also wanted to share that our credit limit on this card has been raised 3 times in 7 years without us requesting it.

Similar thing happened to us, we were told that we were manipulating our credit!

I haven't read all of the responses but I just wanted to say this has happened to me with my Disney Visa. I wasn't planning to book a vacation with it but I did make a large payment with a tax refund and they decreased my credit limit by almost the same amount. This happened several years ago before I was married and in recent years my husband had suggested putting vacay money towards the Disney Visa so we could use it to pay for the vacation and get rewards $$$ for doing it. Once I told him what happened he quickly realized the risk wasn't worth the reward.

The whole credit/debit/linking to magic bands/vacation rewards/redemption cards/perks and RISKS are VERY scary to me. I am so sorry that this happens to anyone. It seems like one big enormous corporate chess game and we are the pawns.

Glad I read this! I am planning on doing the SAME thing.
I do carry a balance on Disney card, was going to take saved vacation money and pay on CC. Making my available credit enough to charge/pay for trip.
My CC balance would be the same..BUT the new balance would have 0% interest on the amount I charge for the trip and also would get reward points.
I called customer service to understand and make sure I get 0% when purchasing a trip. She suggested to notify them ahead of time but are aware of big charges for a Disney trip.
Sound like OP waited weeks between paying and then charging. I guess if this will work I will have to do this right away! Don't give them a chance to drop my line!!

About the protection. I used my Disney Chase Premier as my primary, but I do have a lot of other credit cards just in case.
There were fraud transactions on my card yet I was still able to use it.
I guess it depends how your account is being monitored.
