Disney Skyliner (Gondola Transportation System) Read Post 1 Now Open!

I'll be the jerk to say it: nothing on earth sucks more at that property than waiting for buses at park close and there are 2 or 3 ECVs waiting ahead of you.

I understand the need for them, I understand there are people who are not as mobile. I get all that. It doesn't change the fact that we have ALL rolled our eyes at 11:00 at night after spending the entire day at the parks and just want to go to bed. No, I never say anything and I wait patiently like the rest of us.

Amen!

Make no mistake...the monorails are on the chopping block...there should be no doubt. Like an outdated pentagon program. It's just a matter of "when"

They are severely out dated, expensive, and cost tons of energy costs.

Glad I am not the only one who thinks this. There's a reason there haven't been any new monorail cars in 25+ years.

And it is a shame. I remember, 15 years ago, riding with my children in the front car with the "driver". Back then the monorail was reliable and seemed like a part of the magic. Then there was an accident and that was taken away by the lawyers. Then came the maintenance issues (which were inevitable given the lack of continued investment in the system). Now they can't even keep it open until the parks close on EMH nights - something sold as a benefit for the guests of these resorts.

I miss the monorail of my youth. But to tie this post to the thread topic, these gondolas could very well replace that kind of magic for my grandchildren.

Or why it was never expanded...it was a "loss leader" from day one.

People that continually say "they'll never take away my monorail! Now give me my GF CL TPV room!!!" Are delusional.

...and they waste money too. Don't believe the hype...

They will because they have to. Fear of heights is one of the most common fears, and many people could not ride these things if they wanted or needed to. Disney knows this and will offer alternative modes of transportation.
I don't disagree but doesn't Disney do everything they should? I've heard it both ways that disney will eliminate buses and that's they won't.

Exactly. If it was so efficient and cost effective why didn't it extend all over property? Answer: cause it wasn't. There are no new monorail cars, there are no planned expansions, in fact the introduction of an entirely new concept shows the monorail days are numbered.

I don't think I've ever seen a cable car system that had independent trains on the same track. Not that it would be completely impossible, but probably not very practical. So I think that would create a lot of issues at WDW.

I think proximity control is the key to that system...having enough safeguards to "idiot proof" the system from accidents and make automation possible.

The problem is the beams...that's the heavy cost with rails in the swamp and Disney is in zero mood to finance that. We'd all be flabbergasted at how many grants and tax breaks they got when that was built. That was a different world that isn't coming back.

Most likely this would be cheaper than overhauling the monorail.

You think?

I see an 8 BILLION pricetag on that vegas system.

Just to be clear: the monorail is not mandatory...so they don't have to make that specific choice. They can replace with something else and suffer no downturn in business.

True but I don't see the monorail going anywhere until it physically can't run anymore. Disneyland does have newer trains but they are rerouting that track which is costly.

Oh I think it will run till it kicks...

But the Disneyland comparison isn't quite accurate...as that's still more "attraction" in many ways than transport...it's 100% optional, not the core mass transit...and it doesn't cover a fraction of the guest areas and leave a terrible void like the WDW system does.

The 8 billion was for the whole City Centre project, I believe.

Different scale, no doubt...but wow...that's a lot of scratch. The Disney variant (because they blow the budget on everything)...would ends up being in the range of a whole new park or 15,000 crappy timeshare units attached to all star movies...
