Disney Skyliner (Gondola Transportation System) Read Post 1 Now Open!

That means there will have to be a rather large storage shell...

What about the cables/stringers?
I would imagine the cables would be fine. Each station could store at least a few Gondolas. The main CBR station is also supposed to hold the maintenance bay.

She's talking about being afraid of heights. Doesn't matter how safe they may be.

My concern is about how they will evac them in an emergency.

In that video from Breckenridge someone posted a page or two back it shows how much those things sway after they're launched from the terminus or transit hub or whatever. Not as scary as the old MK skyway gondolas but definitely not for everyone.

a ski lift and a gondola are not the same thing. Ski lift falls can happen easily. Gondola falls are basically impossible unless you wrench open the door and jump out. The one issue I have is that clearly the gondolas are going to have to be going through pretty quickly, I know that generally one can slow down without the rest slowing also on these high speed lifts, but are they really going to have to stop it every time a scooter wants to board and stop everyones ride? I mean pop century seems to be full of scooters so that station could be a bit of a mess. I would imagine it would have to be a must transfer sort of thing, but then they would be leaving their scooters behind. Could Disney basically be cutting the feet out from under the off site scooter rental places and forcing people to rent from them if they want to ride the gondola? That way Disney could just give you a new scooter when you get to where you are going

There have been accidents on large gondola (enclosed) lifts used in alpine areas...

If I recall...a us military aircraft clipped one - I think it was in Italy - a number of years back and caused a major stink.

Nobody is talking about a traditional "ski lift"

Just wondering how bad this is going to ruin the sight lines at Epcot and other portions of the property. It appears that a portion of the route will run behind World Showcase. Are you going to be able to see the gondolas running from behind the countries? Seems like the route will also ruin the views at the BC, YC, and Boardwalk. I guess that's progress for ya!!!

I guess it depends on the "eye of the beholder"-most Guests don't think the Monorail ruins the views.:)

As time goes on...I see more and more comments about "sightlines"...

I gotta ask: why is everyone so worried about the view in the background that you glance at occasionally? Is this the whole "theme park view" money grabbing scheme sinking in?

That's an honest question...not sarcasm.

But back to the original question...you're going to see these cars running just off victory way and buena vista in I assume some kind of cutaway...and likely crescent lake behind boardwalk to the front of studios...so I don't think it will matter too much.

Having to evac the cars should be a very rare occurrence since ether are multiple backup systems for moving the cable.

The gondolas only need to be high enough to clear the traffic on the roads they go over it's possible you won't even be able to see them from within the park.

The post that was quoted linked a report that was done on "ski lift" accidents and the resulting fatalities.

Of note in that ski lift report, with the exception of the "fall from chair" accident, which would presumably not happen with a gondola, there have been no fatalities as a result of equipment failure since 1993 - even though ski lifts are different than gondolas so it's not a direct comparison.

Gondola transportation systems are have been installed and more are planned in many major cities around the world...they will just make World Showcase look more realistic.

$100 minimum to start...is my guess...

You really think eh ? That would be, insane. I mean, I guess I could see it at Pop, though I would expect a gut job and refurb if they wanted to. AoA, well, maybe they could. CBR, similar to Pop. Though I actually like the new rooms.

It has nothing to do with how the rooms look or the pool or where the mug station is...

These rooms are already massively overpriced.

And it's the customers fault...

Is "location" amount to 3x retail value? How much is "magic" worth? (Zero is the answer there)

This is an exercise in perception over reality. You know what Bob has found?
...it's that the captive Audience is insane...they have no economic common sense.

Disney has always preyed on that mentality...but now it's multiplied.

Look at what sells? Art of animation at its price?...port Orleans for $300? Port is a $50 hotel that puts some princessy things in the rooms and now people think that price is awesome?

This is why there are "moderate" timeshares being constructed at full price...it's all part of the same story.

It's insane...it's feeding all their monsters.
But monsters are unpredictable. Like the raptors In Jurassic park.

I get that...I'm just goofing...

I have a weirder curisority: how do they secure them/avoid damage when a tropical storm moves through?

The "gondola" that this type of system would be would essentially be small and detachable from the cable. (As opposed to the large 50 person "fixed" gondolas that are mainstays from spy movies.) This is typically how these things work - they detach at the load station to slow down, then clamp back onto the wire to move high speed along the turning cable. Something like this....

They can all be detached if necessary, but my suspicion is this will rarely if every happen, only in the case of a major storm bearing down on Orlando.

Though the cabs detach and re-attach all the time, they are designed such that they can't fall off the cable. The greatest risk of injuries is of course morons over-riding the safety mechanisms and opening the doors.

Of course there's also this (not to scare anyone - no one was seriously hurt)

I don't think it will be visible from inside Epcot, with the exception of when you are looking OUT of Epcot towards the hotels at the International Gateway, which pretty much already ruins the sightlines. People think of these cars as being way up in the air, but for the most part I think you will find them staying fairly low to the ground - maybe 30 feet up. I doubt you will notice it in Epcot anymore than you currently notice the highway behind Germany/American/Japan.

Pete,

The problem as always in WDW is capacity...those little midgets are too small to be effective.

You're talking about probably 25,000-35000 in just hotel occupants...plus up to maybe 150,000 using it to transfer in between mgm and Epcot...

It's a nightmare if it operates like the monorail system. And will ruin the crescent lake area forever...from were we sit.
