Disney Security Run-in

I didn't say that it wouldn't have been the security driver's fault had he hit the OP. All I said was that to me it was reasonable to honk at (and then pass) someone that comes to a complete stop on a street where the speed limit is 55 mph. I understand slowing down, but completely stopping seems dangerous.

The OP now says they were both at a complete stop when the van driver started honking, so that changes things. Still, is that really a reason to chase someone doing 70 for honking at you? This is why road rage incidents occur so frequently these days.

Anyway, the point of the post was that Disney responds quickly to complaints so that is a good thing. Didn't mean to sidetrack, just felt a little bad for the van driver.

I know the intersection that the OP was talking about and the speed limit up to that intersection is between 25 & 35 mph not 55. The area that is 55 is on World drive after you leave MK. The intersection can be confusing at times and I would do exactly like the OP did if I was not sure the person coming down from either GF or SoG area was not going to stop.

We have trouble in our town with people running red lights and I always hestitate before I go through a light that has just turned green because of this. Recently I had someone make a left turn on a regular green light in front of me. The light had just turned green and as I started to go the person made their left turn in front of me. Unfortunately there are too many people who are in too much of a hurry or on their cell phones that aren't paying attention. For that reason we have my DD call us when she gets to college and before she leaves so that we know that she got there okay and when we can expect her home. Yesterday as my DH & I were on our way out to dinner he asked me if DD had called and I said yes. He said he just heard on the radio that there was an accident in front of the college. So thankfully she was already at school when the accident happened.

Truly makes no difference if there was a stop sign there or not. It is the responsiblity of all drivers to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of them and to be ready to stop at anytime.

If I was merging onto a road and felt the approaching car to my right was not stopping, I would do the same thing. The courteous and correct thing for you to do is stop at a safe distance and proceed when they do.

I would of done the same thing too...in fact I did not do that a few years ago and ended up getting SMASHED into the side of my little car by a truck who turned left on red. I figured there was no way he would do it, but alas he did! So instead of taking chances if I do not believe some one is slowing down even when they should I would rather slow down or if needed (due to comfort & safety) stop. Safety 1st. It isn't worth putting my life in danger for it or any one elses life in danger. And yes, the car behind you should at least leave enough room to stop if need be.

Good job being cautious civileng68...I understand how you feel...especially when someone honks...it just makes you tense up so tight its a horrible feeling.

I live near the main post for the Michigan State Police. You should see how some police cars (State Police, municipal cars travelling to and from the post), drive on the highway. The vast majority drive at least 10 mph over the limit because the know they'll never get pulled over. It REALLY upsets me. Kudos to the OP.

About a year ago a local TV station did a report on sheriff deputies speeding. The sheriff was not a happy camper! The news clocked and filmed a deputy headed home (going off duty) on 82 in Collier County, FL going 95 in a posted 60 zone! I hope that guy lost his job.

I know a number of police officers and I know that it is not fair to generalize them as all being abusers, but there are a number of bad seeds out there that give them all a bad name.

If you are going to speed and honk at people don't do it in a company car, Duh.

Well, it sounds like Disney agreed with you and that is what matters. Having a dangerous employee driving like that is just bad news all the way around.

I called the police on a drunk driver in Orlando a couple of years back. The guy was stone drunk at 8 AM!!!!! He run across 3 lanes and spun around and rammed a sign on the side of the road (192). Turns out he was also in a STOLEN car.

There are crazies out there.

Dawn

Shoot, ya'll should try driving in Charleston, I wish I could take a number and get a truck driver or 50 to lose their jobs.

But then again, I use my horn frequently, had to do it 2x today because they don't understand what those line looking things on the pavement are for, or that you stop at a RED light. I hope nobody tries to get me fired.

J/K, you did what I would like to have done too

:earboy2:

I totally agree with what you did, and as far as not calling about drunk drivers, I'll call in a heartbeat. Especially if my DS is in the car! No one has the right to put my family's lives in danger because they are too stupid or selfish to designate a driver or dare I say NOT DRINK!

I agree that honking at someone while you're in a company vehicle is stupid, not worth losing your job over but for you to chase this van at speeds which you said obviously go way over the limit is equally as ridiculous. Yes he was wrong, but while you were so concerned with being cautious and stopping for the car that may not have stopped at the intersection you don't seem like you were at all cautious about going way over the speed limit to chase someone.

Anyone else noticed that there are more police around Disney lately especially on World Drive? Tuesday I saw a sheriff pull over a driver right near Richard Petty's driving experience. Last year when entering WDW near Pop I counted 9 FHP taking radar between where I entered and MK.

Wonder what story the van driver was giving his boss since they called you back 2 times.

If they had tooted their horn I understand maybe they thought you were not paying attention, that you were able to go. But there is no excuse for laying on the horn. If that happens to me (lets all admit we've been honked at before) I just smile at whomever does it and wave at them.

But please be careful who you chase down, Road Rage is crazy out there and its not worth getting injured just to get a tag number.

Obviously the van driver learned to drive where you did. ;)

Where you are correct that one must maintain a safe and ample stopping distance from the vehicle infront you it is also against MV law to impede the flow of traffic and or obstruct traffic and stopping at an intersection where there is no stop sign, yield sign or traffic signal is simply dangerous and can be against the law. 70 MPH in a 55 MPH zone is really not that bad on a highway. I have stopped and issued many summonses to drivers for all types of incidents and they have to be taken in their totality. When you break down the incident it doesn't seem that bad but in it's totality it just doesn't look good for Disney. I highly doubt the guard was fired if it was his or her 1st violation. I have encountered Disney Security a couple of times and every time I found them friendly to the point it was amazing and amusing. When ever a guard is called it is not to tell them good news but to handle an already poor situation. I can tell you that if I were on patrol and behind you when you stopped like that you would have been pulled over to explain your actions and the explanation you gave would have been good enough for me. 95% of people do not get summonses and are let go with a verbal warning, something the public fails to realize, but the 5% that does sure do make a stink! :rolleyes1

I think the security guard did a stupid thing. He is a security guard for Disney. He was driving on Disney property. You never know why people stop their cars. There could have been a problem. Instead of trying to see what the problem was, he honked his horn.

Having said that, I think it was stupid to "chase" him. If he were going 70mph, you had to be going that fast too. Otherwise you wouldn't have got his van #. That just puts other drivers at risk.

OT: To avoid producing a logjam on a highway, police must drive more than 7 MPH above the speed limit or more than 7 MPH below the speed limit.

"Somebody's gotta" report bad drivers so that dossiers can be built up and repeat offenders identified. Who will be first?

I'm not trying to be mean so dont take it that way, I simply think you have missed the point here.

The area where we stopped was 15mph limit and we were BOTH stopped at an intersection. The road we were TURNING ON to was still only like 35 mph but opens up to 3 lanes and then turns to 55mph. You may/may not know the area I am speaking of. the road we were on is the road that the tram goes under to get you to and from the parking lot to the TTC.

I wouldn't have been very upset if he just gave a slight "beep" but what I have a problem with is that he LAID on the horn non stop until I moved, which I shouldn have let fluster me. What really upset me was I went when I should have stayed. I could have been hit and possibly killed. My problem was that as security he NEVER should have done something like that. EVER!

Wow, I just don't understand the hoopla from either side.

NO real "hoopla" the original post was simply meant to comment and thank the management of this employee for being so caring. I found it very positive that Disney management cares enough to talk to me in detail as she did. That was the original point.

It turned to more discussion now, which is fine.

Just FYI, many departments nation-wide have policies about speeding in particular. In many departments if an officer is caught speeding (with no lights on) or reported by citizens for running a light (with no lights on) they are fired. Some departments are very lenient and some are VERY strict. Depends on the Sherrif or the Police Chief.

Also just FYI, as far as I know, if a police car does not have it's lights on, it is required to follow the same legal limits of passenger vehicles and if not, is considered to be breaking the law.

I saw this same report. On hwy 951 in Collier County, the same news team did a report and found Sherriff's officers going 90mph in a 55mph zone.

Many Sherriff's are very serious and very swift to act on these type of things since the Sherriff is a voted in office.
