Disney pulls ABC from Cablevision......

Let me be more specific - ABC wants some of that $18 per month Cablevision is charging its customers for basic transmission, and keeping, as in NOT passing on to the networks.
exactly "some of the $18 it is charging its customers...that was my retort. "where do you think Cablevision gets their money"

Apparently WABC has sent a new offer, but Cablevision hasn't responded yet. Cablevision has agreed to arbitration as called for by Sen. Kerry and others, with the proviso that WABC programming be returned in the meantime.

And Lost producer Damon Lindof is trying to bribe Cablevision on Twitter: "Okay, Cablevision. You win. We'll tell you what the island is. NOW GIVE THE PEOPLE THEIR ABC!!!!!""

and damon has it backwards too - ABC is the villain here..

the $18 the cable company charges is for the cable backbone - laying the cables, maintaining them, providing the support staff...
that costs money...
then ABC comes along and gets to use that cable backbone....not just for free...they expect to be paid...
that's getting it backwards..

look at the equivalent setup between phone companies that have a network and the companies that use that network....
it is the opposite of the cable/broadcast situation.
companies providing content sent over telephone company networks have to pay the telephone company for the use of the network....and not just a flat rate payment, content providers over phone company networks have to pay the phone companies a % of the content providers revenue..

which is the exact opposite of cable companies and the broadcasters...

Cablevision? Cablevision gets the $18 for basic cable broadcasts from its customers - people like us.
ABC wants Cablevision to pass some of that money on to ABC (and while they don't particularly care, NBC, CBS, FOX, etc.).

Customers pay Cablevision $18 per month for basic cable (apparently - I'm taking the word of someone on one of these threads, I don't live in New York).

Basic cable = for the most part, the stations a viewer could get with an antenna - local stations.

Cablevision pays $0 of that $18 to the station owners for the ability/right/privilege to rebroadcast those local stations, ideally offering better reception than an antenna would (but quality isn't the issue here).

Disney wants some (unspecified? unpublished?) amount of that $18 to allow Cablevision to rebroadcast ABC.

How is that having anything both ways?

Love my antennas.

I know how everyone feels, it was about 7-8 years ago we had NBC pulled from our cable provider for 8 months. Had to switch to rabbit ears to watch NBC.
