Disney News, Discussion & an Element of Fun - 2024 Edition

In a way it’s what Jim would’ve wanted. Jim would’ve been mad to see it still the same as he left it after 30+ years. He would want it to have been updated, had things added or changed to it, but kept the spirit of the Muppets with it. Hopefully the Jim Henson Company and Disney can find a way to make that happen in the next few years while the Villains Show is running.

It’s sad that the Muppets are leaving the Courtyard, but maybe they’re just moving down the street to bring something new for all generations to enjoy.

That and now Disney can do what they’re doing with Cosmic Rewind on RnRC and provide different ride experiences because they have ownership of the IP they’re using for it.
There are definitely several location options to move it to ... and I hope that is the plan. It doesn't need the same sized big theater OR it could be in the same size. ;) Disney has options to highlight Muppets, and honor them better than they have. Hoping this nod from Henson's means that is the plan. It would just have come off better to give a wider plan when they announced they are evicting them.

Well, 'evicting' suggests an involuntary move made by the landlords without providing an option to extend the lease or other things. I'm sure some concessions were made by Disney to get their blessing. Quite possible both parties have already agreed on the plans for HS but any decision to reveal anything is entirely up to Disney. Such as adding Muppets to additional platforms in addition to the parks at Disney's expense, as has been suggested. Probably SOP for stuff like this and that the Henson Co is happy with all the future plans. So... no reason for too many negative thoughts.

I never did alien escape or the stitch attraction there so I don't know how big of an area it is. I know from going on KTTK tour a couple weeks ago that they can't alter the building since it's part of the larger structure so they have to have something that will fit. Granted it's Tomorrowland and I suppose you'd have to do pigs in space or something, but would it be big enough?

I don't feel like they need to stay in dhs but it would be good to have something near rnr if that's possible.

I do agree an updated movie would be nice. I just need Statler and Waldorf to still be somewhere.

Regarding MV3D and the preservation announcements from both Disney and The Jim Henson Company, I am worried that they will lie to us and not want to relocate the attraction, because Disney thinks it should retire.

Oh how I miss Alien Encounter! Stitch ... not at all. It has preshow areas and the theater itself is something of a circle. There is also the shop on the corner there that could easily be moved or eliminated. I think there is space for a decent attraction just not sure it is theater compatible.

MuppetVision is actually a show about technology and could fit easily in Tomorrowland but I would renovate the theater that Laugh Factory is in. Now that Monstropolis is getting it's own Monster Inc show it really isn't needed, there is rarely any demand for it (and it doesn't even hold many). We skip it every trip. While we laugh about Pigs in Space it was never a big hit nor appreciated. It is a bit quirky for the average guest.

I agree BUT I think that Muppets are an IP that can easily have a presence in ALL the parks. DHS is so chopped up with available space for them to get a true home (which they have now just underutilized). Muppets over the years just aren't a singular character or story like other Disney IPs. They morph from who they are to playing other characters. Like when they did the small show in Liberty Square, or the Haunted Mansion movie, their skits, or the travels they did etc. That to me says let them show up everywhere.

OPTIONS are a plenty to move the movie ~ and it doesn't have to be such a large theater like now.

MK
1) Laugh Factory Theater conversion
2) A new theater in Tomorrowland where the outdoor theater USED to be (now parking)
3) Mickey's Philharmonic which has gotten "old" and due for change (but a stretch for Fantasyland)

EPCOT
This is where is truly has a home, the Imagination Pavilion, which is a sad sad place
1) Move it in to the 3D theater, same set up, EASY transition
2) Convert land to ALL MUPPETS, I mean believing in them is definition of Imagination
3) Muppets get a dark ride
4) Play area would have so much potential
5) Bring back the Rainbow Tunnel with Kermit singing Rainbow Connection
6) Awesome gift shop
THIS SCREAMS MUPPETS so obviously

Figment is the official mascot for Epcot and all Festivals, they already killed the land part.

DHS
1) Electric Mayhem in RNR was a top pick for our family (Powerline too)
2) Gives us a gift shop back!
3) Muppets 3D could go in the flex theater after Villains, I mean they dropped the ball on the purpose of the flex theater, then put that dumb Car show in. Might as well bring value back to it.
4) Absolutely space in the Walt's Dream building (where Pirate show was) or convert the theater. I always have believed Walt's Dream exhibit should be at Disney Springs for all the enjoy. That building could have better use. OR find a way to incorporate in to Epcot in FutureWorld as Walt did dream of Epcot in some form.

AK
Show would not fit there but perhaps a small presence by Muppets, some are animals, Kermit, Piggy ... could even just be something small like the Liberty Square show but themed Conservation and the Environment.

Lots of options and locations that could be win/win. Disney has several things that need a major overall. I get why the whole echo lake is so old .... they are likely waiting to work a good Marvel deal. But B&B show is what 30+ years old, no matter when I go you can walk in that theater as it starts with lots of seating. IT IS TIME.

In our house we believe Animation Courtyard was not chosen because something else has become green lit for there. Something that young kids will enjoy because Playhouse will be gone. Lots of good space there and it is horrible they have let it go so bad. Launch Bay does not belong, Playhouse is low capacity. Such valuable real estate with more in behind it. Oh and seriously is Little Mermaid just a figment of their imagination?

OR let Hensons have the movie back. In a partnership deal with others build a theater at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta. It could be multipurpose. They have a big green wing dedicated to Muppets and Jim Henson. They have many of the original puppets there. There is room next door for a theater. They are very familiar. I went to a small Q&A with Gonzo's puppeteer Dave Goelz. I sat right in front of Disney Muppets executives. Def would be a nice addition there where it will be loved forever. There are options for preservation and the Henson's have already made a statement that "something" is happening with it moving forward. It's not just a movie, it is an important creative piece in the Henson story.

It's not MuppetVision without them. They are part of the show!

One of the best show ever, IMO!!! Loved the subtle humor of the preshow...the Tim Curry and Scruffy portion, and the special effects in the theater. I know it wasn't for young kids who could be frieghtened in the dark... but not EVERYTHING has to be for young kids... some things can just be for bigger kids and adults. There were plenty of warnings about not being appropriate for young ones, and if folks disregarded them, well, what can you do? Stitch was AWFUL... but then, I'm not a Stitch fan, so was a bit predisposed to not liking it, especially after replacing Alien.

As for the Muppets 3D relocation, there is chatter on another forum I'm on that it would logically be a great fit for the Lightening McQueen area by RnRC once Cars Land is built... make that whole area Muppet Land....

I will say part of the fun was watching others become animated. Great concept and execution. I am not a Stitch fan AT ALL. I'm not about his obnoxiousness. Went once, it didn't really work for me. Concept wasn't meant to be silly.

Yes, as I said in my post the Flex Theater was a great concept, but other than Club Villain they never utilized it to it's full potential. The Cars thing checked a box for a certain age group but what a waste of good space. Of course no theme worked with RNR current theme ... now with Muppets they can really put that valuable real estate to good use so hopefully that means MuppetVision. Taking down Muppetvision while the Villains Show is playing, then converting it join RNR Muppets is a great idea.

Would love if they could add an INDOOR quick serve dining in that area too, take some parking lot space. With all the new additions we have and more coming the lack of indoor QS dining at that park is an obvious need.

But I will never be convinced that the Imagination Pavilion isn't the obvious choice for Muppetvision and a full Muppets overlay.

I think the Muppets could be shoehorned into the previous Mission to Mars theaters in Tomorrowland (aging myself). The pre-show area is quite small and simple, designed to hold each theater's guests. I have to believe that Imagineering could use this space effectively with a medium to lower risk of budget overruns. Addition without attraction subtraction.

I really hope they go to the Imagination Pavilion theater. Who is really going to the short-film festival? I feel like the target audience for that is going to be equally amused by the Muppets.

I might be the only person sad about losing "Get a Horse" (though I wish they'd rotate out the other two films more frequently)

Will be interesting to see how they incorporate Muppetvision 3D into the future indeed. Just wish they would not always take something away when they do something new....
I know right!? True additions/expansions are hard to come by; TRON and Remy's are the only two examples (that I can think of off the top of my head at least) over the past decade or so that didn't involve getting rid of/replacing another ride/attraction. Perhaps the silver lining is that at least the Monsters Inc. Door Coaster looks like it will be somewhat of an actual expansion of that space.

Oh man, that could actually be cool if it were...

FYI. D23 Membership Terms were recently changed. Some of the changes in terminology and substance are below. It looks like they are no longer calling it a magazine or publication, as they are now electing the right to have it be digital.
Welp, after changing the D23 terms back in March, they are finally moving to digital magazine versions in 2025.

Physical copies will be available for purchase from the Disney Store.

Membership tiers are also changing:

Great news! The printed versions don’t work well for my circumstances, but there was no way to opt out so I had to cancel my membership. Glad to hear I can get one again.

I'm just as happy that the printed magazines won't be part of my membership. I've got a dozen or more kicking around still in their plastic wrappers that I never opened.

I guess I'm alone in being sad that the printed copies will cost more. I already read a lot on a computer for work, so I liked having the printed copies and would read an article or two before bed without eye strain! I wonder if I'll still read them in digital form, I might just skim...

Glad there will be a less expensive tier for $49. Then one can choose year-per-year whether the member gift is of interest and worth going up a tier.
