Disney News, Discussion & an Element of Fun - 2024 Edition

I caught a livestream of the announcements but was too busy all weekend to hop on here for discussion but I'm excited about everything. Funny enough though the nighttime parade has me most excited. But I'm even looking forward to the Cars stuff after seeing the concept art.

Yeah this is hardcore copium, that island is getting nuked and tbqh it's about time.

A new nighttime parade is HUGE and much needed. I am not super excited about most announcements because I know they are a loooong way off. The parade is coming next year and I do think they can actually deliver on that.

No one knows but Disney did imply people would have enough time to get their last ride in. I'm going in October and I want to see Dr. Grant Seeker one last time.

I’ll be there in December but I’m thinking that will be pushing it

Also going in December. I think I'll be a little heartbroken if they close it before I can get one last ride in. I have so much love for that attraction!

My first trip back as an adult after a 20 year absence was back in 2016 and who would have thought that MSEP would be the last night time parade I'd see for nearly a decade. I'm excited enough that we are rethinking our traditional Memorial Day/birthday trip next year and might shift our dates back depending on what we hear. This should also help the post-fireworks crowds too. I'm just super excited it's NEW and not just Paint the Night or something from somewhere else.

Dogs could have heard the noise I made when they finally confirmed Villain Land though. I was absolutely certain that would just stay blue sky, I'm shocked they had the gumption to do it even though it feels like a no brainer. I also specifically love that it's not just some IP land but more about the concept of villains as a whole, like a dark mirror of Fantasyland. I am already seeing comments on other blogs and sites from people complaining that it will be too dark and scary for kids though.

Next month's trip we will definitely have a farewell tour though. Dinosaur is kind of a mess but that preshow is iconic (we are constantly quoting "we're not gonna make it!") and I'm going to miss Dr. Clair Huxtable in all her 90s hairdo glory

I get it but I also see the the other side. Tom Sawyer Island is really not utilized that much and has shortened hours.

Dig site is more of a lose to me than the TSI, but also so many of the months in Florida its too hot to really enjoy. I think I more wish it was something better than a Carousel replacing it.

But how many people are really using it? And walking around tom Sawyer Island isn't really that relaxing....
Ds is 4 so by the time this is all finished it probably won’t impact us much. I’m glad we got to make memories at TSI while we could. He loves going in the caves and running around on the playground. It’s just nice to have an area where he doesn’t have to stand in line and wait. I do see from Disney’s point of view why it makes sense to get rid of it though

It's just wild to me that the only parks with rivers and riverboats left will be the ones made in Disneyland's image. And to chunk that for Cars, in a park that was supposed to not be landlocked like Disneyland was. And to still call it Frontierland when you're putting in IP motorized vehicles that had nothing to do with the frontier. I'm glad others are good with this but I do not like this at all.

That ship well and truly sailed for me when they put a film based on New Orleans in Frontierland.

I do get it but they aren't being heavily utilized at all. If they were very popular and being used enough likely they wouldn;t be taken away.
This. tbh I don't think we can complain about capacity issues at the parks and then also complain when they reclaim a huge chunk of basically unused real estate with limited hours that requires a low capacity raft trip to get to, to build multiple new attractions. I'll miss the Liberty Belle, because that's something I actually did. But I can't tell you the last time I went to TSI.

Re: Frontierland, I know I'll probably get crucified for saying this but the cowboy schtick is just tired and dated and not especially relevant anymore (go ahead and listen to the lyrics to the Pecos Bill song, they are legitimately insane). This is not the 1950s anymore and the concept needs to evolve imo. We can argue about whether or not Cars belongs there; my kneejerk reaction was that it didn't, I was hoping this wasn't the direction they went when the rumors first started circulating about it. But having slept on it and seen the concept art I'm cautiously optimistic. If we can shift this to more of a celebration of American wilderness I'm cool with it actually. And if I'm honest I'm actually less bothered about this than Zootopia in AK, but at least with the latter we got the best possible outcome imo (quarantining it to a show vs. having it take over a whole land). I thought the concept behind Cosmic Rewind was absurd too until I saw the queue and then I was sold on it and now I hope we get a Wakandan Outreach Center in WoL. I also don't think MK should necessarily be beholden to a park designed in the 1950s, for a far different audience.

It should have sailed when they stuck a ride in there based on a film taking place vaguely in the antebellum South tbqh.

The announcement got booed by the audience at D23 (or at least during the stream I was watching, I could hear people booing in the background) so you're definitely not alone here.

It expands accessible area within the park that can be made available to guests at all hours vs Tom Sawyer island that closes around dusk.

Also can add more possible viewing spots for fireworks outside of the Hub.

Add in the business side of increased ROI from added attractions, restaurants, retail vs what is currently there.

I didn't hear booing on the one I was watching but I did find it hilarious that the announcement of the Hercules show on the cruise ship got way more cheering. It was easily the most tepid reaction of the night, the crowd basically went dead

Hard to predict everything based on the fuzzy pics they've shown so far, BUT I think they'll be making an effort to 'hide' the cars ride from Frontierland. Looking at the concept art, they appear to be building a fairly high wall of 'mountain' along Frontierland's edge, which presumably will block any view of the ride cars - it will look like a Frontier town at the edge of mountains and trees...as far as I can see so far. The walkway to Villains land runs beside Haunted Mansion, and there too it looks like some mountain facade will block some or all of the Cars track from view. I'm hopeful that they'll take the theming seriously enough to build the lands with some amount of blocking to minimize distracting views from one land to another. Similar to how they've mostly separated Toy Story Land from Galaxy's Edge from the rest of DHS.

I swapped to someone named Ron On the Go when the stream I was watching was lagging and the people behind him were booing. Someone even shouted 'NO!' to the announcement.

Interesting that it shows the platform, implying they might keep it. What would they do with it I wonder?
My thought for this would be as an entrance to the Cars area. If you look at the concept art, they have a lot of trees blocking the view of the area from Frontierland/Liberty Square.

I think in an effort to placate the folks (including me) who feel skeptical about cars in Frontierland, they are going to have more of the "cartoony" parts blocked from view, showcasing more of the scenic elements (the small mountain/waterfall).
