I have read a lot about folks using Disney gift cards, why? do you get some kind of discount when using them? or do you buy them at less than face value?
if you can buy them at a discount ,where and how?

I have done a search of the forums and so far I come up with folks save 5 % some how but not actually how.

Target if you buy the with a target redcard you get 5% off if you use a pharm discount you get another 5% off. If you don't live in NY or Canada.

BJs and Costco also sell them at a discount 3x$50 cards for $140-something.

Target stopped applying the pharmacy rewards to the gift cards. You can still get the 5% for the red card.

At our Grocery store (Kroger) we get double fuel points on gift card purchases. Sometimes it is 4x points. These points get us a discount on our gas. 100 pts=.10 off a gallon. I figure its money I know I am going to spend anyway I might as well get something for it, i.e. a discount on my fill up. I also purchase them at the grocery with my disney visa so I get disney rewards as well. My way of "double dipping" LOL.

This is what we do. I bought $850 in GC and used the 5% red card and my 5% pharmacy rewards and it was fine. I went into purchase another $600 when I got my next pharmacy reward card, maybe 3 weeks later and they were no longer doing it. I could have kicked myself for not having just purchased it all the three weeks before! This was in February or March of this year.

I think another reason people do it, is having it in a Disney gift card means they can't spend the $$$ anywhere else.

On that note...
Can I buy, say, several thousand dollars worth of Disney GC with my Target 5%, and use them to pay for my trip? (excluding plane tickets, of course)
I googled a bit and read some info, but it wasn't exactly clear how to do that.

We're doing it so that our dining is "paid" for before we get to WDW. I've gone back and forth about the DDP, but decided against it because I don't think we'll eat that much food. I figured having the gift cards will have the money already saved for dining. I buy mine from Target using the Target debit card.

Yes, there is no limit at Target. 5% is immediately deducted from your total purchase at the register. My Target carries the $50 gift card and $2.50 is deducted for each card I buy.

I do the GC at Kroger.

When I buy gas, the savings from GC I keep up with, and move that extra funds into the disney fund too. (and repeat). Last trip I ended up saving enough in gas to get my Photopass plus and about $100 in money to take with us.

Works for me!

Sam's also sells GCs under face value, not much, but every little bit helps.

We buy them through the year when we have extra $ - I usually set a grocery budget and when I can come under that, I buy a Disney GC. It becomes a game to save on groceries to be able to buy a gc. ha.

I buy them at same. It is about 142 for 150 worth of gift cards. They sell them in three packs of 50.

If i have a month where i have some extra funds not being used anywhere else, i will go ahead and buy some gift cards.

They also don't expire. This year, i had $125 in gift cards not used, i will take them next year!!

This is what we are doing as well. I also have been using Swagbucks and get target gift cards every so often that I also use to by Disney gift cards. There is then also an option on the Swagbucks site to shop at target and you get like 2 swag bucks per dollar spent on the target site. I just bought my latest batch of Disney GCS that way and am waiting to see how/if the points come through.

Paid for my entire trip with a 20% off Target coupon at Xmas...PLUS, my 5% red card...and then you can load them into your DVA and get $20 GC's for every $1,000 you spend. Plenty of ways to save with GCs.
Kroger fuel points is a mother great way---especially when you get 4x the points on GCs.

Sometimes I bring gift cards, I personally don't like to use my credit card at Disney so I either bring cash or gift cards or my rewards card or a combination so I know how much I'm spending and don't feel guilty about souvenirs because I have allotted a certain amount.
