Okay, so this does not look like cooked fish (i.e. the red/pink looking meat at the top right). Is that cooked or raw?

The red is tuna (maguro) and is uncooked. The whitefish and salmon are also not cooked. Only the shrimp and the insides are cooked.
 
This is a misconception many people make. Sushi does not refer to raw fish, the term used for raw fish is sashimi. Sushi is actually reference to the rice. Anything served on a ball of rice (nigiri sushi), rolled in rice (maki sushi), or in a small nori cone filled with rice (temaki sushi) is sushi; they have a sweet egg omelet, called tamago, served on rice that many people who have a fear raw food eat.

Others you may try are: ebi (shrimp), masago (smelt roe), tobiko (flying fish roe), anago (conger eel), tako (octopus), kani (crab), surimi (imitation crab). These are all cooked and are good things to try if you are worried about raw items.......maybe you can work your way to some toro (fatty tuna) which is one of my favorites!!!

Okay - I'm not a huge sushi fan, but this looks great. For you sushi experts, is there a way to order this to get only the kinds without raw meat? The Shrimp Tempura Roll looks like the meat is cooked, but the menu description says: "Snake in the Grass" Roll - Shrimp tempura with avocado, eel, and cucumber.

The Shrimp Tempura Roll on that platter is not the Snake in the Grass Roll. Its actually a roll that isn't listed on the menu. Yoshie is an amazing sushi chef and will make pretty much any kind of roll if you ask. There were 2 rolls on that platter that didn't contain any "raw" fish. The California Roll is cooked crab, mayonnaise, avocado and cucumber. The Shrimp Tempura Roll is Tempura Shrimp (deep fried) with mango and watermelon. Both are exceptional. You can also ask if Yoshie does any vegetarian sushi such as cucumber roll, avocado roll, sweet potato tempura roll etc... Enjoy!

I like the california roll and the spicy tuna roll(I believe the tuna is raw- it looks raw) and have had something that was smoked salmon on top of a clump of rice. I'd like to try more but never knew what all those words meant.

Suggestions for my next venture?

When is the Kiluea torte from??? I thought they had changed it to a "blondie" type without ice cream.. Did it change back?

Let me know how Spoodles is! My DH and I are celebrating in Apr. too! It's our bdays and anniv (3rd), all in 3 day span. We'll be there 20-25th and we've got resies at V&A for my bday and I am going to make reses at Bistro de Paris for our anniv.

At lunch on 2/13 the Torte at Kona's was almost like a chocolate chip cookie with the liquid in the middle.
 
DH and I were at WDW for one day this past Jan. after going to the Orange Bowl. We decided that it was time for a snack so we split a Full Montagu and a fruit cup.

*I was still fighting Morning sickness and didn't want anything to heavy so I got the Tomato&Mozzarella salad and the Onion Soup. Both were AMAZING! I ate every bite which was a sight for my DH.

The next day before heading to Melbourne we stoped at The House of Blues since its one of the few places at DTD we have yet to eat.

* I got the chicken fingers which honestly were bland, and gross and yuck... the bite you see taken out was about all I ate other then the rest of the fries:sad2: .

I like just about anything when it comes to sushi, but the one thing that I would not suggest is uni (sea urchin). This is one I just have never developed a taste for.....it is actually more of a texture thing for me with uni. As for recommendations, I would try Ika (squid) or Akagai (red clam); both of these have a firm texture and mild flavor so they are not too much for sushi newbies!

I'm so glad to see a House of Blues picture! I'm doubly happy because now I know I can take pictures inside HoB (someone told me it was a nono?) I have to take pics for the Dis'ers when I go don't I?:rotfl:
My hubby wants me to ask how big was the bowl of Jambalaya? Soup Bowl size? Plate sized? It's what he's planning on ordering when we go there and he's the one that's making me pick your brain like this! :rotfl2:
 
Ya'll are killing me with the sushi talk, since it's a no-no when you're preggers! "Food porn" is taking on a whole new meaning. Oh, what I wouldn't give for a rare tuna steak... *drools*

I can't believe they served that pepper. They should have at least put that bad spot down. But the coloring towards the bottom of the pepper looks like the pepper is going bad. Larry grew those last summer and we learned how to identify the bad ones with those color changes.
