Hi Tina,

You and Myah have been added to the DIS board fish extender group for this cruise; welcome!

See back to Post #5 of this forum (Page 1) for basic information about fish extenders, posted by PrincessSchmoo. We are doing a little gift exchange with all those signed up on Post #1. If you do an online search for "fish extender", you'll find lots of ideas for making/buying your own FE bag, ideas for FE gifts, and a variety of general info sites like this example (click on link to read).

Our group here is easy-going -- we don't have any particular expectations about what to give and get, how, or when. The only rule is the same one expected of all other FEs: any cabin who has signed up to participate must give at least one gift to every other cabin who has signed up. Giving multiple gifts, or gifting each individual is up to you.

Be sure to check back into this forum after September 24, 2016 for the final list of participants. Meanwhile, happy trip planning!

thank you! I'm so excited to participate. My daughter is 14 I forgot to add that to my earlier post.

Hey fellow cruisers, as you're planning ahead for the FE, please also consider theft-proofing your fish extender as there have been reports of the occasional theft of FE gifts or cabin door magnets by dishonest or mischievous individuals, both adults and youths. It's a bummer when this is meant to be fun, and the vast majority of participants still choose to continue to spread the joy despite a few bad eggs on the cruise. Some tips to consider for the FE to minimize the risk:

Safeguard your fish extender:
1) Personalize your fish extender with your names
2) Secure your fish extender (some people use cable ties or twine, and be sure you have a way to cut them off when you leave)
3) Use deep pockets or a deep bag (say 8"-11" long) so that it's not tempting for would-be thieves to peek in and help themselves
4) Use fish extenders with enclosures such as a zipper to hide items from prying eyes -- a small zippered tote bag would work, maybe add velcro tabs if you already have a pocket-type extender you like

When giving out gifts:
5) Try delivering gifts at times earlier in the day when there are people out and about in the hallways; leaving gifts out overnight may be more risky and leave your intended recipients disappointed
6) Label your gifts to the recipient using tags, stickers, or bags - e.g. put the intended cabin number on it; personalization is a theft deterrent

When collecting your gifts:
7) Check your fish extender from time to time and take your gifts out as you receive them

Any other suggestions?

Someone more experienced with customization on the boards will need to jump in! But if you mean the smileys that you embed in a post, you can click the "happy face" symbol.

If you mean how to get a signature line or other graphics needs, there are multiple threads on "how-to":

...as well as a Technical Support board:

ya I tried to add them but it didn't work. I did read somewhere that you have to have posted 10 times before you can use those.

Yes, to enable features like direct messaging and what-not you'll need to get to 10 posts. Luckily, there is a whole board dedicated to letting people post blank posts just to get to 10! Go here: http://www.disboards.com/forums/test-board.88/

You just post, wait a few seconds, and post again. You're almost there...

Very good ideas!! We zip tie our FE to our fish, then used nail clippers, which I pack anyway, to cut it off at the end off the cruise. I used to give those little nips of alcohol in our gifts, but the last time we were distributing them, we noticed children checking out some gifts that had already been placed in a FE. When they saw us they stopped and walked away. The FE wasn't theirs. I would hate for some kid to get ahold of alcohol not realizing what it was, or even if they did know what it was. So, no more alcohol gifts from us. More practical gifts this time.

Looking forward to connecting with others to set up a Fish Extender group on this cruise.

If organizing defaults to me on this DIS thread, I'm happy to get it started in a simple way. Looking for about 15 cabins to participate (if there are too many we can break into more groups). This first post would be updated periodically to keep an upfront list of who is participating so that you know how many people are interested. The group will be closed by September 24, 2016 in order to allow time for group members to prepare the right number of gifts.

It seems easiest to collect info for each cabin by simply posting basic info to this thread (as many other threads have done) -- this way participants get feedback quickly. Basic info could include: 1) Cabin number; for each member in your group 2) first name, 3) gender, 3) age (or "adult/child"); your choice to share what you're comfortable with. Just want this to be easy and fun!

Everyone is welcome to provide their ideas for this FE. The only guideline for participation at this time is that each cabin provide at least one gift to the other cabins during the cruise. You are welcome to gift each individual, or gift more than once on different days, and make this experience as magical as you want! This way we can accommodate everyone with different budgets, available time, and luggage space. It will be wonderful no matter how you contribute.

Looking forward to hearing from fellow cruisers... FE sign-ups or general cruise chat is welcome! I will check up on this thread at least weekly.
