Disney donates 100 Grand to Haiti relief

The companies that tick me off are the credit card companies. They stand to make TONS of money from people charging their donations. Sure would be nice if they donated THAT money (and not just to Haiti but any disaster that they benefit from. It just doesn't seem right.)

This is not an entirely accurate statement. The credit card companies have agreed to waive the swipe fee for donations to the relief.

That's a pretty good amount going to disaster relief.

Disney can give what they want if they want. No obligations. If you have such a problem with it, write to Disney corporate or better yet stop giving them business.

Absolutely ridiculous that people think they should get to choose how much a certain company gives.

Yea, not to mention that many of these people have never even lived in a home. I think it would be a huge shock to come on board a fancy ship and live there and then have to go back to what they live in.

The Walmart Foundation made a $400,000 monetary donation on Wednesday to the American Red Cross to support the organization’s emergency relief efforts in Haiti.

Walmart Canada announced a campaign to raise money for Haiti disaster relief, starting with a $100,000 contribution from the company to the Canadian Red Cross.

At the request of the Mexican Red Cross, the Walmart Mexico Foundation is providing $100,000 worth of pre-packaged food kits.

Walmart Puerto Rico made a donation of $25,000 to the Puerto Rico chapter of the American Red Cross and launched a campaign to encourage customers to contribute the change from their store purchases to benefit disaster victims.

Walmart Argentina also announced a $25,000 contribution today to the Red Cross in that country.

Walmart operations in Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Chile have launched fund-raising campaigns to benefit disaster victims.

Tom Brady & Gisele Bundchen are donating $1.5 million.

I think any and all donations are kind, generous, and thoughtful. I do not think anyone is obligated to donate anything. And we are ALL contributing by our tax money going there to support the US's relief effort (military, aid, Naval hospital ships, etc).

Sure its better then nothing but 100,000 to Disney is like me giving .10 cents.

A frequent conversation I used to have with my sister when we were both in our 20's fits this kind of thinking perfectly:

Her: It's the least you could do.

Me: No. The least I could do is nothing.

That kind of thinking espoused above (why don't you give more? You can afford it) frequently leads to the giver saying, "Well, if you feel that way about it, then I'm not going to give anything".

I don't understand comparing Disney (or any other large company) to individuals. I would never judge a person for the amount they are donating (or for not donating at all), but I have to say that a $100,000 donation to this extraordinary relief effort on behalf of the Walt Disney Company is lacking. I don't care who thinks I'm judgmental, it is NOT ENOUGH for a company like Disney. Also, from a strictly public relations point of view, I think it was a mistake.

So it is OK to judge a company but not an individual. Nice double standard.

It's funny because if they hadn't said anything or even donated nothing, this conversation wouldn't be happening.

But only for a very specific list of relief organizations. For example, I read that Doctors Without Borders is not on any list, and they are only waiving that swipe fee for 6 weeks. Not expressing an opinion, just sharing what I read...

Doctors Without Borders is on Discover's list. Here is a link to their site which shows the organizations:

It is also on Capital One's giving site, but you have to do the donation via that site but you choose the company you want to donate to.

I did not check others, but do know that it is on the list for these 2 companies. Capital One has the giving site up year round and you can make donations using your Capital One card for over 1200 charities without them charging a swipe fee. I think that other companies should follow suit on that as it is nice to know they get 100% of the donations. With that said, I think that companies would get a lot less money if they did not accept credit card donations (sad but true), and would prefer to get $97 out of $100if it meant they would not even get the $97.
