Disney donates 100 Grand to Haiti relief

Now wouldn't that be a wonderful thing to happen? A few cruise ships pull up to Haiti, and allow the Haitians to board and live in the cabins, at least until power, order, water, and medical care can be restored.

That would be great!

Carnival did something similar to this in New Orleans.

I'm not sure if the cruise lines could afford to do this right now. That is a lot of money they would be losing on cruise fares when the travel industry is not doing great right now. I think offering to transport supplies would be a better solution and would be using the ships to their full advantage.

I know every little bit helps, but when I'm seeing street vendors that live day by day on what they're able to sell on the streets here in the DR, arriving to the Red Cross telling me they’re donating blood, because it’s literally all they can give, US$100,000 from Disney seems very low.

I agree. I saw a list of five Corporate donors this morning, and some company I've never heard of donated 5 million. Microsoft has donated 1.5 million. What?? Microsoft? Come on! Same with Disney! Also saw a very heart-warming piece on DR sending in large equipment like bulldozers and backhoes and excavators, as well as people on bicycles carrying a case of bottled water at a time. Good for the DR! Royal Caribbean has announced that they will be bringing supplies on their scheduled stops at Labadee (80 miles from Port au Prince) to be delivered.

It's just not feasible for cruise ships to provide temporary housing, as these ships could not even get into the severely damaged port. Carnival had two ships to house workers during Katrina, but this didn't work out very well....can't remember the details.

Maybe the rescued top dog bankers should donate their half-million bonuses.

How much did you donate? How come you aren't on your way over there passing out cases of water? Maybe you should donate your anual bonus. I mean since they are doing it so should you. These kinds of posts are ridiculous, you can't compare one company to another. In 2008 Disney donated $209 million to charities (couldn't find 2009), I wonder what that company you never heard of did that year. $41 million of that in part went to disaster relief charities. I imagine their 2009, and 2010 numbers will look the same.

Yes in theory - but which of the 2 million get picked to live in that luxury? :confused3

Well, since I've donated zero, I think $100K is a nice gesture. Sure they could probably afford more. I sure hope everyone who thinks it isn't enough is ponying up THEIR fair share.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that Disney is doing a LOT more but a lot is going on "behind the scenes". There is a very large percentage of CMs esp in WDW that are from/have family in Haiti and there has been many things done for them including free phone calls to Haiti from company phones, increased access to computers and internet sites usually blocked (like Facebook, Myspace etc), increased access to other benefits etc.

Not everything they are doing can easily be shown in dollars and cents...

The cruise ships docked in New Orleans after Katrina did so on U.S. Taypayers (FEMA) dime. It wasn't a contribution, the ships were due to go into drydock - they stayed there the specified period of time, companies collected their $$ and the ships went into drydock for renovations when the N.O. contracts were up.

Looks like that nasty old greedy Walmart is donating as well..
---------------------

The Walmart Foundation made a $400,000 monetary donation on Wednesday to the American Red Cross to support the organization’s emergency relief efforts in Haiti.

Walmart Canada announced a campaign to raise money for Haiti disaster relief, starting with a $100,000 contribution from the company to the Canadian Red Cross.

At the request of the Mexican Red Cross, the Walmart Mexico Foundation is providing $100,000 worth of pre-packaged food kits.

Walmart Puerto Rico made a donation of $25,000 to the Puerto Rico chapter of the American Red Cross and launched a campaign to encourage customers to contribute the change from their store purchases to benefit disaster victims.

Walmart Argentina also announced a $25,000 contribution today to the Red Cross in that country.

Walmart operations in Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Chile have launched fund-raising campaigns to benefit disaster victims.

Sure its better then nothing but 100,000 to Disney is like me giving .10 cents.

I think everyone on this thread should agree to donate. No less than $10.00for the luxury of being able to sit at home in our comfy environments and judge/debate/discuss what other people/companies have donated. :thumbsup2

I don't get why this is such a big deal.

So Disney has only donated $100,000 to the Red Cross, so far. They could easily donate more if they felt like it. And that's the point. It's a donation. It's not meant to become a "Look at me I donated x amount more then so and so" one upper. Some people thought it was feasible to donate a million, some didn't. Just like some people can afford to donate $5 and some were able to donate $100.

I don't understand the "Thanks for your completely voluntary donation but why didn't you give me more" mentality. It isn't any of my business what any individual, company, or country gives to any particular cause. Neither giving $1 billion nor giving nothing would change my opinion of any of them.

neither do I. :confused3 Maybe because it's easier to criticize than compliment?

I'm not quite sure what you find sad, the fact that I pointed out how ridiculous it is to compare what others do voluntarily, especially when we aren't even willing to do the same, or the fact that its been ignored that Disney donates a huge amount of money annually and part of that already goes to disaster relief. So that means that $100,000 is above and beyond what they normally do :confused3

I don't understand comparing Disney (or any other large company) to individuals. I would never judge a person for the amount they are donating (or for not donating at all), but I have to say that a $100,000 donation to this extraordinary relief effort on behalf of the Walt Disney Company is lacking. I don't care who thinks I'm judgmental, it is NOT ENOUGH for a company like Disney. Also, from a strictly public relations point of view, I think it was a mistake.

The companies that tick me off are the credit card companies. They stand to make TONS of money from people charging their donations. Sure would be nice if they donated THAT money (and not just to Haiti but any disaster that they benefit from. It just doesn't seem right.)
