People who live in Florida are insane.

Last year, when I went to Florida, the only ting I had to complain about was that wherever I went, Disney World, friend's houses, etc.
, the pools were all warm! It was disgusting! And when that poster said the pool was at 70 instead of 80, I almost spit out my drink! 80???? That is SO wrong.

A pool is suppose to be for cooling off and being refreshed! Not feel like you're swimming in your own pee! ICK!

And the comment about catching a cold for 3 weeks from swimming in that pool? That was hilarious! What an idiot.

Well, this post caused me to do something I've never done before: click that little "Report bad post" icon. What a rude, unnecessary post! It was a) way off-topic and b) name-calling. YOU try swimming in 70 degree water. 70 degree water feels much colder to the skin than 70 degree air. I won't be trying it anytime soon. At our local YMCA, we have 2 indoor pools. The "warm" pool is set to 84 year round and the "cool" pool is set to 78 year round. The outdoor pool is unheated and only used in the summer, but it averages about 76 degrees or so and is quite chilly.

I find it unbelievable that you would call someone an "idiot", yet you spell your home state "Connecitcut" later on. Heck, even this redneck from Kentucky knows it's spelled Connecticut. I realize it was probably a typo on your part, but you certainly didn't give the OP much of a break when he probably wishes he had simply worded things differently to get his point across better, without people like you hijacking the thread.

Be careful of name-calling in the future, or it will certainly come back to you.

Do I think Disney is trying to save money? Naw. I think the heater was just not functioning up to speed. I will say that the temp of the water at SAB was the coolest I've found though. I wonder if it has something to do with it's size and the constant flow.
Sure, Disney trys to cut back some things. But, we're all still going and spending our hard earned money.
As far as those in Florida....all I can say is that a week ago, my ds's gf was complaining about how 'cold' it was in Tampa. I think he said it was in the high 40's/low 50's a few days after that comment. Well, he fired up the old computer and showed the gf some photos of the 18+" of snow his family back in Mass had just gotten....she felt much warmer!!! It's all relative....chilly to those in Orlando is going to be downright hot to us here in NE.
Did you ever watch the CMs in WDW in mid-Dec if it drops to 45 degrees??? It's pretty funny...hats, scarves, mittens...meanwhile the 'idiots' from the frozen tundra known as NE are running around in shorts!!!!

it's not a debate. I've just never seen it personally. we've got friends with private pools that never drain them for the winter. our community has 2 pools, they heat one all winter and just treat the other one. if they stopped heating the one, we'd fire the HOA. it may seem silly, but we expect to be able to swim in January. I drove by yesterday and there were plenty of people swimming and laying out. I've stayed in onsite and offsite hotels in the winter and never seen them drained. that's just my experience.

I would venture to say that 99% of folks in the Central FL area do not drain their pools. I have no experience outside the Central FL area. Our HOA pool is open as well all year long. In my neighborhood, just about every other house has a pool, and none of us drain them, unless it is necessary for maintenance/repairs which require draining.

My pool - unheated right now is 70 degrees, and you would not catch me in the water until it is mid-80s. I grew up in PA, and have only been here for 2 1/2 years so I am not a wimp. I want to be in the pool to be refreshed, and even on a 95 degree day, I still don't want the water to be too cool! Just one or two overcast days, even in the summer, or a rain storm can drop the temp significantly.

We were at BC on Feb 10th/11th, and my DD swam for hours on Friday evening, and again on Sat (air temp was in the 60s) - as long as she was in the water she was fine, it was the walk to the water slide that was cold! We live 30 min from Disney, but stayed at BCso she could use the pool - as you can only use it if you are a guest!

The kids Mac 'n' cheese meal used to have Mickey Head pasta. Now the meal uses plain old elbow pasta with Mickey head shaped cheese crackers. My guess is WDW saved a few cents eliminating the Mickey Head pasta.

How about the Nescafe instant coffee all over WDW, with the possible exception of Kona's???

Heard once that it costs Disney less than .02/cup!! That's about right.

Also reading about some menu changes - at Ohana's, for instance. Sweet and sour in a bowl to be peeled is MUCH cheaper than bigger guys on a skewer!!!

Idea for thread is interesting , Mark. Sorry it keeps getting hijacked and hope you are all recovered from our cold, wherever it came from!

Also need to comment that I think we have an abundance of insane, rude or trollish poststhese last couple of days and methinks that teens who have off this week need to find themselves something "else" to do and keep off the DIS!!!(Not that some of you are not here all the time and are not wonderful contributors - I wasn't being "ageist", just commenting on what I think has been an outrageous week as far as nutty or nasty posts goes...)

Completely forgot about it being vacation week!! And I have a 12 y/o who is home.....and on the computer more than usual. That is probably a good thought...must be more kids than usual. It has been a bit rowdy this week.

I know you get the germs from other people. But when your body gets wet or cold it can lower your strength, and in this weakened state, allow the germs you already have to get the best of you.

This is why you get more colds in winter.

In the summer you come in contact with the same germs but since your body is not being taxed by cold or wet you are strong enough to not let the cold develop.

People get more colds in winter as an INDIRECT function of the outside temperature. We get more colds in winter because we spend much more time indoors, and indoors with closed windows. The air recirculates within that building more, and since cold viruses can be airborne ... well, you can do the math from there.

In warmer months, we spent more time outdoors. Moreover, we spend more of our indoor time with some windows open, and the fresh air has no viruses (theoretically) in it, and some of the "old" air leaves the building, and therefore there are fewer virsues per square inch in the indoor air.

Louis Pasteur discovered the existence of microbes in the 19th century. In the 18th century, Benjamin Franklin discovered through anecdotal evidence (he didn't know about the existence of germs, per se) that when sharing space with someone who's sick it is helpful for the remaining healthy people in the house if all the windows stayed open, even in the dead of winter.

I can't speak for the other jumpers, but as for me, I just hate it when incorrect info is posted, and then some people read it and believe it and spread it to others, and then when someone gets called on it they can say, "Well, my brother's father-in-law's barber read it on the Internet." Of course, I just hate it even worse when I'M wrong ....

huh. I take a break and come back to find that I'm an insane idiot. it was about 83 today. try jumping into an unheated pool and see how quickly you jump out this time of year. it's a different region of the USA. manatees are still living in 72 degree spring waters to stay warm. kids wear sweatshirts when it's 70 degrees. we may be insane idiots, but we like our pools warm in the winter.

I agree with the OP. Was there in Jan and the pools were freezing!!!! Don't advertise them as heated and then get there planning to swim and you can't. I paid for heated pools!!!!

Wow, you are so nice even when others aren't! Good for you ! I thought of another one, no free AP's (or was it park hoppers) for DVC members. I think I read they used to do that, wish they still did!

My WORD, some of us are a tad cantankerous, aren't we??? (Pats shoulder of OP consolingly.)

I was at POR with my five yr old dd in January, and we had hoped to swim (okay, well, she had hoped to swim...I myself had precious little desire to don a swimsuit, but that's another story). After foolishly PROMISING her she could swim one day, I took her to the big pool at POR and nearly froze my fanny off. She didn't care one whit, though she shivered a lot and her lips turned blue (they honestly were blue-tinged).

I admit to being rather disappointed in the water temperature, since I had assumed that "heated" meant "heated to a comfortable level".

Now, as for other money-saving measures that Disney has pursued that have ended up backfiring, I can't say I've witnessed any since January was our first trip. But I can say that my local grocery store not long ago went with a cheaper plastic grocery bag for about one week...they were all ripping every time you put something not completely round and smooth in them. Ended up costing them way more than their original bags, as one of the employees told me, and they all hated them, as did the customers!

Now then, get out there and have a magical day!

I would not consider that an example of Disney being cheap. When Disney first started the Vacation Club members were offered a limited number of years with length of stay passes. Those that bought into the program knew it was limited to these years, and future buyers knew it was not offered. Sales are so good now, they really do not need the ticket incentive.

They do give DVC members a discount on APs.

As for the OP topic, umm... I can't put my finger on any specific thing. But I feel like corners have been cut recently. I'll chew on it and see if I come up with anything concrete.

Oh, I know: the CRT. Some of that is to bring demand in line with supply... raising prices *significantly*, increasing the dining credits required, and changing the entire process.

We went at the end of August last year. It was super hot and humid (I will never complain about the humidity in NY again!) but the crowds were low so it was great. My one complaint was that they shut down some of street vendors the last few days we were there at MK. You could see where the street vendors setups would be but no one was manning them. For the life of me I couldn't find a turkey leg and I really wanted to try one. I know that the crowds were lower and this was a way to cut cost but I did miss that Turkey Leg. (Don't get me started on the noodle station not being open!)
