This is a lovely applique! I do understand about the darker fabric showing through.
After having done a bunch of appliques for quilting, I've found a tip or two to fix this kind of problem. What I have done is now that your top stitching is complete, flip your piece over and make a small slit in the fabric behind the hands ie. that small part of the hair fabric and your backing. Be careful not to go through to the front. Then I use a popsicle stick or my finger and gently release the fusible web up to the stitch lines. Then I use my scissors and trim away the fabric behind right up to the stitch lines. Then once it's lined, you won't see anything but the hands themselves. I hope that helps!!!

Thank you! I think I'll give that a try on a sample applique I have. I don't think the dots will be as noticeable once the lining is in place but the hair fabric will still show. I usually try to keep the area of overlap between the pieces just wide enough for the stitching to cover it but since the fingers are so narrow, I didn't want to risk making an error in tracing/cutting.

Since we were showing recital pictures, here is Megan's from last week. She was in a hip hop class and danced to a HSM song. As usual, her costume didn't fit and she spent most of the song pulling on it. If anyone needs hip hip shoes that were barely worn (she didn't wear them at practice) let me know. I think they are size 12 or 12 1/2.

Oh Teresa, please tell Arminda that Jacob was too a beautiful baby! Strangers would come up to me all the time and tell me he was too beautiful to be a boy! Isn't that weird? I didn't know how to respond to that. Luckily he grew out of it and I don't think he looks like a girl now (right, Arminda?).

Ok, hey Miss Cammie, I found some baby pictures of Jacob and can show though the magic of the scanner: isn't that great? At Christmas:

At Animal Kingdom (those drums have their siren call, don't they?):

And because he is just so stinkin' cute!

I just spent too much money ordering them both Keens for the summer. Has anyone tried them for the kids? My kids are so hard on their shoes so I am hoping these will last. They need closed toe for camps and the Keens seem like a cross between sandals and sneakers. Any experience would be appreciated!

Here is something I worked on today.

watermelon.jpg

I just have to hem it and make her a watermelon hair bow and I will be finished. I am trying to decide if I like the white ribbon for ties. I had thought about doing green ties but the girl at Hancock's said she thought it needed white to go along with the white checks. What do you think?

Steph- Keens are great for kids. They last and wear very well, easy to clean and run true to size. I bought DD5 a pair last summer (about 1/2 size up) and they have again this year become her go to shoe of choice, and really they still look brand new. We have all become Keens wearers in my house. I know the cost is a little much, but they are well worth it and will keep those precious little toesies safe. Hope this helps:)

Thank you so much! They are on their way as I type. It just seems that I am constantly buying shoes and I would like something that will last!

Since we are posting recital photos here is mine. I din't get a chance to snap a ballet one. This is tap:

What do ya'll think? I know it is a little blocky, but is it ok considering the fabric is drawn that way?

That is adorable! I like it with the white but could see how it would look cute with green or red. How about a little matching ribbon along them hem?

p.s. Her hair is getting so long!

Back in the fall, Kirsta was in Cheer competition. One of the girls on another team, about 13, kept stopping her routine so she could tug her bra down. She'd grab a big handful of uniform and tug. She must have been REALLY uncomforable to stop her routine to do it. I couldn't help but chuckle. Never did look to see if it's on the video!

Cute! I love looking at all their fancy outfits. So sweet.

I think you did a great job on your appliqué. When I did mine, I drew the face on with a pen, so you are ahead of me. Oh and someone asked why the kid had a mushroom on their head, at least yours looks like mouse ears! I think if I would add anything, maybe pink on the cheeks with a marker would be cute. Otherwise it looks perfect to me!

It probably is, poor girl! That sounds like something that I would do, for sure. Megan's top keep slipping off her shoulders and she really wanted it on her shoulders!

Yeah!!!!! It's finished & I love it & so does she!!

This was a vintage Simplicity pattern that my grandmother used for my mom. Now that I've figured it out, I think I'm giong to use one of the other views to make the girls' Christmas dresses. (Yes, I really do think that far ahead sometimes. I bought the fabric last year on clearance & it has the same vintage-y feel that this does.)

Whew! I went away for a week and had over 100 pages to catch up on. I took notes and will comment later. Everything has been really great!

I did see an adorable custom on Friday at MK around 1ish outside of the Pooh ride. Was that anyone here? I thought maybe Megan (the 2yo). I really wanted to stop and talk, but we were rushing to get to our reservations at CRT. As soon as I get settled, I will post some pics from the trip.

Your little one is so cute in her dance outfit. I think that the applique looks like the fabric so I say great job.

Linnette
Oh Linette....WOW....you have done so much!!! They are all very beautiful. You ROCK girl!!!!

I PM'd you the address.

I'll stick a note in the package when I mail it to Alicia offering to make something for her friends.

I just need to know where to mail it.
I will send you a PM!! Thanks so much!!

with all your sewing with out a pattern!!! :lmao: That looks great. You can PM MouseTriper and I'm sure she'll give you the information.
Yeppers, I sure will. I am just trying to stay organized and mark off those who have completed their BIG GIVE projects once they ask for the address. LOL.

Jacob was a beautiful baby!!! What a cutie pie!!! I will have to show Arminda tomorrow! Although, I'm sure she will insist that he is HANDSOME! Tell Jacob she said so! ;)

Flea - I'm so glad to see you posted... I was just telling my mom about those adorable knit/crochet pants you posted some time ago (that was you - right??). She loved the idea and wanted to know if you use a pattern for them and if so, where you found it. She has really gotten back into crocheting lately.
I'll just answer this quickly before I get back to reading and admiring all the stuff :)

The pattern I use for knitted pants is www.pimpmylongies.wordpress.com/longies-pattern :) it is really easy once you get started - I've only been knitting for a year :)

Enjoy your time with Princess.

I have ordered fabric from Asia, the lady I order from in Asia is very nice and answers questions very quickly. The fabric is a cotton/mystery (maybe poly) blend and does not feel the softest or smell the nicest but after washing it is fine. It will never feel as nice as quilt shop fabric, but it is cute and works for special outfits. HTH!
Ty for the help. I think I am going to break down and buy the chip and dale farbric and see how it turns out.

Hi everyone! Love all of the Crayon rolls. They look great. I need to try one of those. This is a dress that I had the fabric for, but just never did anything with it. last night I cut it out and this morning sewed it up.
th_IrelandandLexieChristmas20072368.jpg

Oh I LOVE this fabric and the dress. My four year old was checking out the pictures with me and she said OH MOMMY I want that! :rotfl:

ok I finished my BIG GIVE outfit. I am a little worried about it though. I think it is too small. When Jenna gets up I will try it on her and see if it fits. I hope it does, because I had some problems making this dress.

th_S2010233.jpg

I really like the tulle on the arm! Very very cute!

Just wanted to share with you all that due to the inspiration of this thread, I have moved past appliqued shirts and have sewed DD her first Disney vacation dress. Obviously pretty simple but hey...it's a start.
http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg269/ksc565/th_013.jpg[/IMG]

This is adorable fabric. Is it pre shirred?

Thanks for the warm welcome :goodvibes Here are a few things I have pictures of.. I've been doing a lot more sewing lately (just finished my degree so I have some free time while i'm jobhunting as i'm only working part-time right now) and i'm going to take pictures of my more recent creations soon :cool1:

DD 14 would love this top! I am going to have to show it to her and see what she thinks! I would love a pm if you have these for sell anywhere. ::yes::

My version of the pillowcase top:

The dark spot on the sleeve has to be a shadow since there is nothing there IRL. I decided to go all blue instead of a third color on the back and I am glad I did. I love the way it turned out. Mom might make shorts out of the blue to match.

Cute I think shorts out of the blue would be adorable!

I need input from the kind ladies (and Tom) of this thread. I did this appliqué this weekend and just not sure. I mostly like it but I'm not pleased with how much the fabric shows through some layers. For example fabric of the "hair" shows through where the fingers overlap it. I also feel like the dots of the base fabric showing through almost look like Giselle is pocked. LOL It doesn't show as much in the photo as it does in person. I'm hoping it will be less noticeable once I line the back of the appliquéd area.

What do you think? ANY suggestions or critiques are welcome!

th_giselle1.jpg

BTW - I'm also not sure about how the hands look. Something just doesn't look quite right but I'm not sure what.

Well I am in awe with your "flaws" and all lol. I do see what you mean about the showing through with the hair. It is still really really cute though!

Oh good, I was afraid I'd have to keep it around to remind me of my inadequacies. PM me your address ASAP so I can get this wreak out of here!!! ;)

BTW - I just realized I had someone ask about what we asked for when we got Zoe's hair done at the Princess Fantasy Faire. Basically, I first just asked if any of the CMs doing hair had experience working with AA hair. Luckily there was one so I just let her do what she wanted. It helped that Zoe's hair was braided already so I just had to take out the braids and it wasn't too tangled. I noticed the CM didn't really comb through Zoe's hair so much as smooth the surface. It wasn't as fancy as some of the other girls' hair but Zoe was so happy I was more than satisfied. It wasn't easy to let her go swimming that afternoon, though, knowing her hair wouldn't hold up... but how could I say no to swimming when that was her favorite part of the vacation? :rolleyes1

It was me ty for answering. I got to thinking about it tonigth and I bet they would not be able to do that with her hair. The home she was in before she came to us put a perm on her hair so we are patiently waiting for it to grow out. :sad2: The really sad thing is she has beautiful hair.

Wow amazing stuff posted today  and many new "window shoppers" this weekend!:cool1: Welcome! I love the Big Give Giselle!. I hope it fits too! Lisa, your Giselle is just gorgeous...you really captured her expression. So if you don't like it....what are you going to do with it? I'll give you my address if need be :rolleyes1 :rotfl2:

Well, this weekend was our recital. Each girl had two numbers and their were two shows plus two days of dress rehersal. Here are some shots from the last 4 days!

Yeesh thats practically a trip report! :3dglasses Glad the whole thing is done for now! Nine more days of school and its summer vacation!!!:cool1:

Not sure why but Photobucket took your shots out when I thed them. So I am quoting without pictures lol. Anyway LOVE the second shot of your older DD she looks beautiful! Love the Dorthy outfits on your younger two so very sweet! :goodvibes

Awww Callie....I am so sorry Princess is leaving but I am so happy that you are at peace with where she is going and who she will be with. My thoughts are with you!!!
QUOTE]
Thanks for the hug. :)

OMG! I love the Dorothy Costumes! We had our recital too. It was Disney themed this year since the older students performed at Disney in April. We were technically "Snow White" (my DD had quite an arguement with her teacher that this costume looks nothing like Snow White and that they should have been Giselle!!!) I wish I could think of something to turn this into for the Disney trip!

LOL I love your DD's comment! She is to stinkin cute too!
