This is a lovely applique! I do understand about the darker fabric showing through.
After having done a bunch of appliques for quilting, I've found a tip or two to fix this kind of problem. What I have done is now that your top stitching is complete, flip your piece over and make a small slit in the fabric behind the hands ie. that small part of the hair fabric and your backing. Be careful not to go through to the front. Then I use a popsicle stick or my finger and gently release the fusible web up to the stitch lines. Then I use my scissors and trim away the fabric behind right up to the stitch lines. Then once it's lined, you won't see anything but the hands themselves. I hope that helps!!!
Thank you! I think I'll give that a try on a sample applique I have. I don't think the dots will be as noticeable once the lining is in place but the hair fabric will still show. I usually try to keep the area of overlap between the pieces just wide enough for the stitching to cover it but since the fingers are so narrow, I didn't want to risk making an error in tracing/cutting.
